Barisan Alternatif had a Joint Election Manifesto (Manifesto Bersama BA), which was about what BA wanted and not about what keADILan, DAP, PAS or PRM wanted. What keADILan, DAP, PAS and PRM want does not matter. It is what BA wants that counts.

NO HOLDS BARRED

Raja Petra Kamarudin

In 1999, almost as soon as Parti Keadilan Nasional (keADILan) was launched on 4th April, the opposition got itself organised. Together with DAP, PAS and PRM, the opposition coalition called Barisan Alternatif (Alternative Front) was created to house the four parties.

But it was a loose coalition, unfortunately, and although many were of the opinion that Barisan Alternatif (BA) should be legally registered with its own logo and flag, this was not done. The reason given was that you need at least seven parties to register a coalition so the only four in BA would not meet the requirements.

Nevertheless, in spite of the loose coalition having no real legal status or its own flag and logo, the opposition did not do too badly in the November 1999 general election. It not only retained Kelantan with a very comfortable majority but it won Terengganu as well. And in Kedah the opposition won 8 out of the 15 parliament seats. It did not win enough state seats to be able to form the new Kedah state government but exactly one year later it managed to deny Barisan Nasional its two-thirds majority in the state assembly when keADILan won the Lunas by-election.

There were many creative things which BA did in the seven months leading to the November 1999 general election, plus the year or so after that. It formed a presidential council where the top leaders of the four parties met once a month to come out with its policies, strategies and programmes. It had a media coordination unit that issued press releases and statements on behalf of all four parties but under the name of BA.

In fact, in the run-up to the general election between Nomination Day and Polling Day, the BA media coordination unit held a daily press conference every noon so that the media could be updated with the latest developments. And the late Rustam Sani from PRM was in charge of this unit and was the official spokesman for BA. The individual parties -- keADILan, DAP, PAS and PRM -- were not encouraged to hold their separate press conferences or issue separate media statements as they did not want any conflicting statements to the BA official stand.

The opposition coalition had a shadow cabinet with a full committee in each ‘ministry’ that was headed by a ‘minister’. And they would monitor the performance of the Barisan Nasional-headed ministries. For example, a few days before the government tabled its budget in parliament every year around November, BA would hold its own budget presentation in parliament and the press would be invited and encouraged to ask questions.

The opposition, of course, already knew what the government budget was (in spite of the OSA) so all they needed to do was to counter-propose a better budget. On more than one occasion the government was forced to go back to the drawing board to revise its budget so that the opposition budget would not outshine the government budget. At least the opposition was able to force the government to give the voters and taxpayers a better deal even though the government and not the opposition got the credit for this.

There was a research and development unit that did all the research and helped prepare data and statistics for the opposition parliamentarians. There were many an occasion when the opposition ‘minister’ knew more about the goings-on and developments in the government ministries compared to the minister himself. The minister would be left red-faced and would beg the parliament Speaker for time to reply to the question in writing because he or she did not know the answer to the question the opposition had raised.

The BA Members of Parliament outshone the BN Members of Parliament, even those with Cabinet positions, by far. The many units, committees, think tanks, etc., set up to assist the opposition parties and its leaders were so efficient and professional that the government MPs ended up looking rather stupid by comparison.

Back in 1999, the opposition comprised of politicians, activists, academicians and intellectuals. It was a formidable team. There were professors, lecturers, journalists, writers, and whatnot in the team. Barisan Alternatif got some of the best brains in the business. And these people were very creative and progressive and were prepared to try many new things, most which worked with extremely positive results. This team really gave new meaning to the term politik baru (new politics).

And the BA Joint Election Manifesto was very clear and the voters loved it. It was a fantastic balance that went down well with the voters.

Then PAS decided to do what was good for its own party and not what was good for the coalition. It proposed Islamic laws in Terengganu. And then DAP decided to do what was good for its own party and not what was good for the coalition. It left the coalition in protest and in opposition to PAS’s Islamic laws proposal. Then, much later though, keADILan and PRM decided to merge into one party.

Then, in the following general election in 2004, the opposition parties decided to not work as an opposition coalition but instead each party would go solo. In some constituencies there were three- or four-corner contests. The opposition not only lost badly in these three- or four-corner seats but in some instances the candidates lost their deposits as well.

The opposition got slaughtered. It was like Custer’s last stand. DAP, PAS, keADILan and PRM thought they did not need each other. They thought they could take on the 14-member coalition called Barisan Nasional, plus each other in the same process, and still form the next government. They could not even retain their deposits let alone win the election.

It was so embarrassing.

The opposition had become arrogant. It got too big for its shoes. It thought even God Himself could not stop the opposition from forming the next government. And they did not need a coalition to do that. One opposition party can take on the 14-member Barisan Nasional, plus the other opposition parties as well, and will win all the seats. Single-handedly, one opposition party can win all the states and enough parliament seats to form the federal government.

I suppose they thought the same thing about the Titanic when they said even God Himself could not sink this ship. But it was sunk -- just like how the opposition parties were sunk back in 2004. It was taught a lesson it will never forget in a long time.

Of course, in 2008, the opposition parties came back together as Pakatan Rakyat. And it did better than in 1999 because of that. But this is still not enough. Pakatan Rakyat needs to reflect on what BA did back in 1999 and repeat that success. In fact, today, it can now do better than what it did in 1999 because, today, more people believe in the opposition than they did in 1999.

The opposition is, again, starting to become arrogant. Let us hope they do not start to get swollen headed like they did back in 2000-2001. If they do then the next election, whenever that may be, would be a repeat of the 2004 disaster.

There are many smart people out there who are prepared to contribute their time and brains to the opposition cause. Some would even spend their own money doing so and do not expect any compensation.  But the opposition should stop thinking that it is already very smart and that it does not need any outside help. Everyone needs help, in particular the opposition. You just need to know who to ask. And if you are too big-headed and too proud and think that you need no one because you are clever enough to do everything on your own, then expect to be taught a lesson come the next election.

And it will be a lesson you truly deserve.

On March 2008, the votes swung to Pakatan mainly because many decided enough was enough for Barisan. Not because they thought Pakatan could be just as good as an alternative Government without the blatant abuses, arrogance and corruption trademarks of Barisan. Between that time and the next GE, should Pakatan fail to seize the opportunity to show unto themselves they have this capability, many votes would swing back to Barisan like a see-saw pendulum. Nobody and no Party is indispensable in politics. Either they perform or they get the boot. But the $$$ factor had always played a big decisive role in the equation, notwithstanding non-performance. So it means the voters must now vote with their heads, not what's put inside their pockets. There are just as many rotten apples in Pakatan as in Barisan.

Yeah, you're right. Some of them in Pakatan Rakyat had started to become so arrogant so much so they ban selling beer, they ban concerts, they criticize SELCAT, and keep talking with twisted tongue.

These people should be removed if PR wants the support of the Rakyat.

No money no talk. Be careful BN has that commodity too much. It means, PR start your strategies now, resolve issues, how small it is, immediately. Make people realise that they have been taken for a ride these 52 years. They have to work hard now instead of discussing petty inter-party issues. When selecting a candidate, ensure the best quality of person with leadership for long term cooperation among all races. Is there any one reading in PR out there?

Yes Barisan Rakyat need humble leader to eat humble pie.......

The best thing Anwar can do is now offer the PM role to the FIRST Bumi PM from either Sabah and Sarawak. Make all future PM 3.5 year term with the last 1.5 year as hand over. This should throw the Racist UMNO-BN into Chaos......offer it to Taib or Pairin........not the Rubbish 2nd Deputy PM. If things don't work out call no confidence (make sure keep Speaker power as check against the PM)!!

Yes, I agree with RPK, the perception is that the PR is getting arrogant.
Just because they won 5 states[the humiliation of losing of losing Perak later not taken into consideration]they are no longer feeling the pulse of the people who voted for them, who voted for change, who voted for the hope of a new Malaysia.
I can but hope the PR can get their act together before the next general elections!!
Change, we can.
Chnage, we must.

First there was PAS and DAP, a no win situation.
Then Kedilan come to the center of these 3 standing on the mount.
Third DAP and PAS must fade into the background
and empower Keadilan to act as a single force against the adversary.
Which would you prefer, to go bust or the ultimate victory?

Overseas it's normal to have an Opposition Cabinet with his/her own portfolio to keep the Government of the day in check but in Malaysia there is still a way to go but since 0803 the Opposition did came up with an alternative Budget which is commendable. The other issue here is that the Umno led Government has become complacent & thinks that there's no other parties which can govern except itself & I bet even if BA wins power next election Umno & its Government machinery like PDRM, Army, Judiciary & Civil service will not allow BA to take Government. When this occurs there's going to be blood in the street since the Rakyat will fight back. Be prepared I say!

BN had gone through a dozen times elections and kept wining until 308, they still won by wafer thin. There's always a rationale behind for them to be unassailable! They also have their value and weightage to stay as a heavy weight in the ring and the audience admiring them are still the same audience they were the voters last time and the present time and the next!

308 was a lesson for BN to learn due to hatreds of the audience to see too many foul tactics that, BN the heavy weight, punched below the belt of the feather weight PR. The distinction was clear, PR won because they were seen as a less evil and not that they had become heavy weight yet! They still need times and efforts to prove their weight and qualify properly to match the next game and win the bouts in the level playing ground.

Since they have the time to prove themselves, they must also prove it honestly and sincerely to the watching rakyat and dun ever take for granted that the audience are all fools who would buy the tickets to see only one or two charismatic idols who play butterfly tricks would capture the eyes and shun the minds from justifying their real performance!

Had all component Parties of BA done enough since they have won so many States to be the training ground, or rather, they are still in the deep belief that by all rhetoric and political histrionics, they will retain their baby luck and storm the Bastille by the next GE, albeit non performing governance?! Then they are like the arrogant army they would test the bitterness of Waterloo, and doomed to be a forever failed oppositions! The map to PutraJaya will be burnt!

Chew the cud and be wise... Honesty is the golden rule to beat hypocrisy!

Dear PR members,

It can a small mistake, it can be just one PR member's comment but the damage going to be BIG further more we have the enemy waiting for us to do mistake... Our RPK already given a crystal clear explanation in case if you all have forgotten the pass. So, please put all your personal agenda a side and work in a team... Everytime, when you all want to come up with something new or want to implement something new have a proper meeting among the PR Members and once it's agreed with the PR members then implement it and never ever think or decide something by your own and give all of us a shock treatment by blindly announce it. the enemy with all their machineries are waiting to exploit your mistake and make you pay the price.

So please don't put our future and your future in jeopardy. Your enemy and our enemy is the same.So it's always a smart move to fight our enemy in a team and not alone because it's proven that our enemy is strong. As our RPK said, please listen to any suggestion, idea and proposal from our supporters. There is one Malay Proverb 'Kecil Jangan Disangka Anak, Besar Jangan DiSangka Bapak" It means that don't under estimate our supporters out there. Sometimes they also having lot of good ideas, suggestions and proposals so please listen carefully on what they're saying and analyse it first. If we 1failed to "WIN" the war come next GE then it's case gone not only for us but for our entire next generations. So, please accept our RPK's advice once and for all

Great article/write up. As the saying goes... Absolute power corrupts absolutely.. It's of paramount interest that any government should be reviewed on a timely basis be it the opposition or the present government. Malaysia has too many old dogs still trying to learn new tricks. The old tactics of money is very difficult to deny..but please elected rep... do it for your people not for the position and title...

Another thing to note, as a Sarawakian... I have to disagree with wongnoball regards to maybe offering the PM position to Taib? Hmmmmmmm this is a terrible decision... The indigenous have been struggling so long with the help of the opposition to spare their land under the present state government... the biggest brother in construction is still holding high with contracts... refer to the news by Al-Jazzera...regards to Titanium.

1999, that was the year mahathir denied newly registered voters from voting,
I will kiss the hands of my related elders, but never kiss the hands of anyone else. If fair play had been observed, mahathir would have lost 5 states to BA, but final results states only two states, i.e. kelantan and terengganu.
Yet there are people who will bend over backwards and kiss the hands of those who cheats, bailed out their siblings using tax payers money and give holidays to the privelage to paid holidays on citizens money.
I will never do that, etiquette or not. everyman are equals. malays will never understand this concept until they accept reality and break free.
Freedom from religious persecution. freedom from feudal(royal) persecution. Wake up malay brethrens and break free from enslavement. have the will and believe in our abilities and god's world will be ours.

Dear wongnoball,
although your intention rotate the PM position is understandable, I urge you to think more about your suggestion of making the PM position for Sabahan or Sarawakian just because of their place of birth. In my opinion, head of a nation should be the best one can find, not because he or she have a right connection, or born at the right place. If we resort to such trick, then we are no different to those people that offer money to make someone vote/join their party.
Here I also would like to encourage people that comment here in MT to think first before saying anything in the comment section. Yes, we have our own right to speak, but is what we write contribute to the discussion? Have we slander or blaspheme anyone in our comment? What about other people sensitivities? Have we respect other people right to speak their mind like we have respect ours?
Peace to all.
