MUAR, Feb 11 (Bernama) -- The formation of the National Price Council shows the Barisan Nasional's (BN) commitment in tackling the problem of spiralling prices to ensure the people are not unnecessarily burdened, said Umno vice president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
Muhyiddin, who is also Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Minister, said the setting of the council was a long term strategy by the government to keep prices of essential goods in check and not just because the general election is around the corner.
"It shows how serious the BN is about this. The election will only last about a week or two but the problem of spiralling prices may last a long time," he told reporters after making a check on the BN election machinery for the Sungai Raya state seat in Bukit Pasir here Monday.
He said the step (to form the council) was taken because the government feared if the problem was not brought under control, the people might be burdened by prices tripling or quadrupling as had happened in some countries.
The opposition were trying to distort to issue to gain political mileage, he said, adding that BN members had been instructed to provide the people with the correct picture of the situation as price increases of essential goods were a worldwide phenomenon and not peculiar to Malaysia.
