MUAR, Feb 11 (Bernama) -- The formation of the National Price Council shows the Barisan Nasional's (BN) commitment in tackling the problem of spiralling prices to ensure the people are not unnecessarily burdened, said Umno vice president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin, who is also Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Minister, said the setting of the council was a long term strategy by the government to keep prices of essential goods in check and not just because the general election is around the corner.

"It shows how serious the BN is about this. The election will only last about a week or two but the problem of spiralling prices may last a long time," he told reporters after making a check on the BN election machinery for the Sungai Raya state seat in Bukit Pasir here Monday.

He said the step (to form the council) was taken because the government feared if the problem was not brought under control, the people might be burdened by prices tripling or quadrupling as had happened in some countries.

The opposition were trying to distort to issue to gain political mileage, he said, adding that BN members had been instructed to provide the people with the correct picture of the situation as price increases of essential goods were a worldwide phenomenon and not peculiar to Malaysia.

Muhyiddin, the title shld be fromation of Price Council shows BN is SCARED!
Have you heard of proactive management!
These price hikes should have been anticipated long before and should have steps taken not after the prices has changed, but as prevention of price changes.
this last minute council before election is just an eye wash!
Just walk down the street and ask any middle class citizens out there!
We are not ignorant anymore!
Be prepared to pay the price!

National Price Council is a sham. It does not take into account real inflation, and what it does is unnecessarily punish wholesalers and maybe producers. It will create price distortions and is a move backwards from a free economy.

Formation of a sleeping council (though it complies to Supremo's philosophy) does not mean anything but wastage of taxpayers' money.

Understand that, Man with outgrown shirt?

Big shirt is also a waste of taxpayers' money.

Open up the economy to the world and you will have the cheapest product flooding the market. No need for Price council. It is bullshit. Most of Malaysian comodity is already controlled price. Price determine by both the goverment and the business.

For example:- Bernas, Proton, steel, flour, sugar and etc. are already control by the goverment and big businesses. There is already and artificial control price by the goverment. If the goverment really want to bring the price down, first of all open up the automobile market, so that the Thais, Indians and Chinese cars can come in. That will definitely reduce greatly our cost of living.

Secondly, open up the flour, sugar and rice market. So that these comodities reflect the real market price. Thirdly, reduce all import tax and duties to zero, so that there is free trade with the rest of the world.

Is the Goverment willing to do it? NO WAY. Because it will reduce their monopoly on certain comodities and automobiles. And that will definitely reduce their political power. They won't do it.

Like I said before, only economy chaos can bring the BN goverment down. Opposition will never be able to bring the goverment down. But I think BN is close to bringing the economy to a halt. Our economy competetiveness is losing to Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. Sooner rather than later, our economy will be in recession. Save your money and wait for BN to collapse.
