PUTRAJAYA, Feb 11 (Bernama) -- Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said opposition parties have resorted to playing up racial issues as they have no real issues to raise for the upcoming general election.
"This time they have run out of issues and are resorting to racial ones or by making promises they cannot keep. I think they are at their weakest point," he told reporters after receiving a courtesy call from the new Unicef representative to Malaysia, Youssouf Mohammed Oomar, at his office here Monday.
He was confident that the Barisan Nasional (BN) would secure a two third majority in the election because of the close cooperation among the component parties of the BN at the grassroot level apart from there being no major problems.
Syed Hamid, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kota Tinggi, said it was also normal to discuss about candidates to be fielded by the BN in the election.
He, however, left the decision to the party leadership, adding that in future it would be best to let the candidates know early to avoid speculation.
"To me, new faces must be included but this does not mean a total clearout of long-serving MPs," he added.
