Such criticism against the protesters only justifies and strengthens the flawed notion of monolithic community because it attacks other Malays and Muslims who are innocent of the appalling act done on Friday in Shah Alam.

Hafiz Noor Shams, The Malaysian Insider

What happened last Friday in Shah Alam – when a group of people protesting against construction of a Hindu temple chose to do it by parading a severed cow’s head knowing full well that the Hindus hold the cow sacred – is disgusting.

There are ways to protest but the method employed by these individuals is so despicable that it should be unthinkable and, hence, unspeakable.

Malaysians who believe in a more inclusive future have every right to be angry at the protesters, whatever their political inclinationsmay be.

So reckless was the action that it left far too many thinking individuals with a revolting aftertaste that lingers on the tongue, even days after.

It reminds too many Malaysians of one of the worst facets, if not the worst, that Malaysia can offer. It invokes all kinds of negative emotion: fear, sadness, disgust, anger. Pessimism reigns.

Regardless of debate regarding the ideals of Malaysia, this is no way to enter August 31, or September 16.

On the other side of the coin is the romantic Malaysia at play.

If one concentrates just barely, one would realise an oft-overlooked but yet obvious and crucial fact in the whole episode. It is a fact that is capable of becoming the symbol of a better Malaysia that everybody dreams.

It is a fact that the one who is standing up for a minority group against the majority is Khalid Samad, a Muslim Malay. It is a hopelessly clichéd romantic narration in which a Malaysian of a different background stands up for another Malaysian of different background.

This important fact deserves greater attention because it provides a concrete example in combating generalisation that leads to the perception that a community is homogeneous in its opinion.

It is especially useful in undoing views that the majority population – the Malays – are bent on pushing the minority aside with impunity.

For the action of a very limited number of individuals, there are those outside the community who condemn the whole Malay population as they condemned the outrageous protesters. This generalisation is unfair and unbecoming of anybody that dreams of an inclusive Malaysia.

That generalisation is absurd. More than absurd, it is dangerous because that itself leads to a greater downward spiral into bigotry. While they themselves claim to abhor bigotry, they themselves are falling into the same trap that is the basis of such bigotry.

While Nazib Rozak and his gang are busy fanning the flames of racial hatred to divide and rule us for UMNO's monetary benefits, the Indons are burning our flags, insulting our royalties and accusing us of theivery. If we don't do something quickly, the UMNO gang will strip this country of all that's worth fighting for and hand whatever is left to foreigners like Cur Toya. The enemy is not your neighbours or rakyat of different race or religion. The enemy is the very people who use you to divide and continue rule us, even to the extent of ignoring overbearing neighbour who is using the very disunity created by our selfish and shortsided leaders to kick us in the butt.

Khalid Samad is a Malaysian Malay.
Najib and gang, including the 50 or so who abused a dead cow, are UMNO Malays.

There is a big difference between those 2 kinds of Malays.
One has the support of all Malaysians.
The other, mainly by UMNO Malays.

i agree with you brother. We should not generalise all Malays. I honestly tell you there are equally and huge numbers of my malay friends too who respect and have not a tiny bit of hatered on others but equally angry on those who did it last friday. If it hurts you brother, i sincerely appologise to you of some who out of anger generalise all malays. But here i would like to say umno i am not sure of their honest comments if they speaks against it. Just look at toyo, blame on others not even helping to calm the situation. Sad such people call themselves as leaders.

I will tread where few dare to tread under the current circumstances surrounding the event in question.

There is a saying that "Silence means consent". MY question to Malays and Muslims IN MALAYSIA .. Why have you remained silent all these years ? To what you know in your hearts and minds to be inappropriate about Malay values and Islamic values. Yes, some of you have opposed to the personal detriment of yourselves and your loved ones from repercussions. Yes some of you would venture this statement in defence of why you have remained silent.

Would you now expect the non-malays and non-muslims to not blame Malays and Islam IN MALAYSIA (as a whole) for the situation TODAY (after 52 years) !? Would you expect the non-malays and non-muslims to be able to tell the DIFFERENCE between a "good" malay (and a "good" muslim) from a "bad" malay (and a "bad" muslim) !?

Think about it .. especially those that are attempting to stir up another M13. Those that were wronged have not forgotten.

Think about it .. Malays and Muslims IN MALAYSIA. The situation of the Malays and Muslims IN MALAYSIA in relation to the non-malays and non-muslims are no one's doing but your own, by omission or by commission.

Your DUTY (in Islam) and Malay honor to restore the rightful position.

This Khalid Samad is a very good ambassador for Islamic leadership. Well done mate.Nothing religious about his stand - just plain decency and common sense. All faiths will have no problems with leaders like this - whatever his faith

I totally agree this is wrong and unfair. However when only a few Malays/Muslims do condemn this actions, non-muslims in general actually wonder whether it is condone by the Malays/Muslims. Maybe the majority of Malays don't read MToday.

Will this episode create another wave of 'brains' leaving this country so that ultimately, Malaysia will be populated mainly by MORONS??

What do you mean A FEW? What do you want? Another rally by Malays to condone the act? Yea, that's what the Malays are good at, rallies and street protest. Where were you guys during anti-ISA rally? Ain't most of them Malays? Thousands of em. And you people just sit back and complained about traffic jam in KL. And suddenly Malays become the pariah?

Thanks, put all the blame on the malays and muslims. Yeah, and all of other races are innocent. For more than 50 yrs, the chinese did not voted for MCA and the indian never voted for MIC. Shut up!
You people just proved that PR is fighting a lost cause. You are no different from UMNO goons. Bigots. Irresponsible. Stereotyping.
You blame the malays for ur conditions, like how TDM blames the chinese for malays' conditions. Like people cannot be held responsible for their own condition but to blame others. RPK was right. This is hopeless. Let's go back to where we were before. Hating each other.
"SAYA ANAK BANGSA MALAYSIA". I never recognize bangsa2 lain (Melayu, Cina, India, Serani, Punjabi dll). Nope. There is only one bangsa; Bangsa Malaysia, capisce? You people can never comprehend this.

mirrorman, you helped the MB which is tan sri khalid ibrahim. the article is talking about khalid samad. do not confuse the two. perhaps, you don't know who khalid samad is. he is an MP representing Shah Alam. and he is from PAS, mind you.. surprised? PAS rep fighting for HINDU rights against his stupid fellow UMNO malay muslims? some say he is hindrafer than hindraf. he didn't go emo like hindraf though. he present facts, indisputable facts. little that people know that he went against his brother too, the UMNO man shahrir samad. imagine how it must been back home during hari raya. hahaha.
