(Bernama) -- The elder brother of Terengganu PAS commissioner Datuk Mustapa Ali has joined Umno, saying he was disillusioned with the so-called Islamic struggle said to be pursued by the Islamist party.
Zakaria Ali, 63, from Alur Tuman, together with 20 of his friends handed Umno membership forms to Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh here last night.
Speaking to reporters, Zakaria, 63, said he had never been a member of any political party before but was an ardent PAS supporter.
The retired teacher said he and his friends decided to embrace Umno because they felt PAS had strayed from its founding principles to pursue the Islamic cause and was incapable of caring for the people's welfare.
Asked why it took him so long to join Umno, Zakaria said he had been following developments in PAS since 1969, hoping that the party would mend its ways, but was sorely disappointed, hence his decision to embrace Umno.
Asked whether his PAS strongman younger brother Mustapa knew of his decision to crossover to Umno, Zakaria said they were not close and rarely interacted with each other.
