If we believe in God then we would believe that God created us. And would God play games with us by creating us of different faiths so that we may kill one another?

NO HOLDS BARRED

Raja Petra Kamarudin

A friend once asked me whether I consider myself a Muslim. I asked him: first of all, what is your interpretation of Muslim? He then asked me what is my interpretation of Muslim. And I gave him my interpretation of Muslim: one who believes in God, the One God, and does what God commands, which is to serve mankind.

Then you are a Muslim, he said.

I know of people who set up Christmas trees every year and place presents below it and get drunk on Christmas Eve. They may even go to church once a year for Christmas Mass. But they believe that whites are superior to non-whites and the genocide of non-whites is no great tragedy to mankind.

These are not Christians.

I know of people who go to Mekah every time they face corruption charges so that they can pray in the ‘House of God’ for divine intervention in beating the corruption charge.

These are not Muslims.

I know of people who perform the pilgrimage to the holiest of temples every year and yet have scores of murders to their credit.

These are not Hindus.

I know of people who place altars and burn joss sticks every morning in their massage parlours that front for brothels.

These are not Buddhists.

To these people, they are ‘religious’ because they perform the rituals associated with whatever religion they believe in. But that is as far as their religion goes. Compassion and service to mankind is not at the top of their priority list. All their actions are guided by greed, lust, vanity, egoism, arrogance, and all those other anti-social attributes you can think of.

It is time Malaysians stopped ‘talking’ religion. Religion is not in the rituals you perform. Religion is not in the clothes you wear. Religion is what is in your heart.

Some Muslims suffer from a very serious fundamental problem. The problem is they do not follow the fundamentals of the religion. Islam is the religion of ‘there is no god but God’. See the small ‘g’ and capital ‘G’ in the two god words? It is spelt that way for a very good reason.

For that matter, many would argue that Islam is not even a religion. It is a way of life. You breathe Islam, so to speak. In other words, every beat of your heart ticking away ticks for Islam. You do not need rituals to prove you are a Muslim. The fact that you are breathing already means you are Muslim because when you breathe in and then out that breath translates to Islam.

If you do not grasp what I am saying then I can’t help you. It just means you look at things from a very superficial and on-the-surface perspective. You need to go deeper than that. You need to feel the pulse on your wrist and be able to say, “This is Islam.”

And that is what happens when religion, any religion, has been reduced to rituals, ceremonies and the manner you dress. You lose the essence of the religion. And this is when we start arguing about trivial issues while we allow the essence of the religion to pass unnoticed.

Does it matter what women wear, or how a man dresses, or whatever, when below those external coverings lurk maggots and worms eating away at our soul? I suppose this is a statement many religionists, Muslims included, would not be able to comprehend.

If we believe in God then we would believe that God created us. And would God play games with us by creating us of different faiths so that we may kill one another? All religions believe in the beginning of time and the end of time. And the Abrahamic faiths believe that we are all descendants of one man and one woman, the first two beings on earth.

Would this not then make us all brothers and sisters? And we may be brothers and sisters who follow different paths to the same destination but is this not God’s wish and something absolutely beyond our control?

Who are we to question God’s wisdom in making one brother/sister a Jew, another a Christian, yet another a Muslim, and others of the Hindu, Buddhist, etc., faiths? Do we know better what is God’s grand design? Dare we shun God’s wise decision by shunning those who do not follow that same path as us in arriving at the same destination?

Yes, this is certainly food for thought this Sunday morning in a prelude to the Muslim holy month of Ramadhan. God has said He knows better what He has planned for us. Maybe it is time to not question or dispute what this plan is because surely, if he is really God who is the Creator of us all, He would have been able to create all of us of one faith and avoid all these disputes and killings in His name.

Islam at Crossroads: Who's to Blame?
M. Rajaque Rahman

It has become almost fashionable for a Muslim to say 'Islam is in danger'. The religion whose literal meaning is peace is today seen as the root cause of terror and violence. The Muslim world cannot merely dismiss this as a fall-out of a grand conspiracy against Islam by people of other faiths. It has failed to present the real essence of Islam and remained a mute spectator to many atrocities against humanity committed in the name cleansing the world of infidels.

This diffidence to stand up for Islam is mainly due to lack of clarity among Muslims about what their religion truly stands for. The Muslim world is heavily weighed down by its own blinkered interpretation of what's permitted and forbidden in Islam. The most glaring misinterpretation that has led to a distortion of the very essence of Islam is its understanding of the expression 'La Ilaaha Illallaah', which is the first principle of Islam. Literally translated, it means 'there is no god but God'.

However, generations of Muslims have been taught to interpret it as 'there is no god but Allah'. Thanks to this limiting interpretation, Muslims are made to believe that there are many gods, but only Allah is the right one. This understanding totally distorts Islam's real message of tauhid (oneness of God).

A case in point is the recent statement of chairman of National Fatwa Council of Malaysia Abdul Shukor Husin while passing a fatwa against yoga. 'Many Muslims fail to understand that yoga's ultimate aim is to be one with a God of a different religion.' When one has affirmed to 'La Ilaaha Illallaah', how can a Muslim think of another 'God of a different religion'.

If a Muslim thinks there are different Gods for different religions, he is negating the essence of Islam and unwittingly subscribing to polytheist beliefs. 'La Ilaaha Illallaah' establishes beyond argument that there is only one God. However differently we may pray and by whatever name we may call, it goes to that one source. Further, the Quran clearly states that God can be invoked in different names. 'Glory be to God, beyond any associations. He is Allah, the Creator, the Evolver, the Bestower of Form. To Him belong the Most Beautiful Names.' [Al Hashr 59:22].

Despite the clear pointers in the Quran, orthodox mullahs still hold that calling God by any other name than Allah amounts to associating a partner with Him. The biggest casualty of this exclusivity of Allah has been the concept of jehad, prompting innocent Muslims to believe that fighting against 'infidels' who don't call God by Allah is an act worthy for the Quranic promise of heaven for jehad. This amounts to challenging Quran's command to invoke God by any names with a sense of reverence and beauty.

This myopic interpretation of the concept of tauhid has had a domino effect on other spheres of life. Take the case of recent fatwas forbidding yoga for Muslims on the ground that yoga will erode their faith in the religion.

As the Quran and Hadith have nothing specific that will make practice of yoga haram, the ulemas based the ruling on their own fear of supposedly 'Hindu' elements of yoga destroying the faith of a Muslim. The best way to allay their fear is to look at the Hindu philosophy on yoga and see how and where it contradicts the tenets of Islam.

Yoga simply means uniting with the Self. Maharishi Patanjali's Yoga Sutras starts by calling itself an enunciation in union. The asanas, the practice of which is the focal point of these fatwas, are just one way of attaining that union. Is striving for such a union with the Self against Islam? It cannot be. For, Prophet Mohammed has said, 'He who knows his own Self knows his Lord.' Anything done in pursuit of knowing the Lord will count as a meritorious act of following the Prophet.

The best explanation of why yoga is not just permissible, but also desirable for Muslims is to be found in the second sutra of the Yoga Sutras. 'Yogas Chitta Vritti Nirodhah.' It means yoga is stopping all the modulations of the mind. Ceasing all the outward activities of the mind and reposing in Allah is the ultimate goal of Islam. So doing yoga asanas as a means of attaining a thoughtless state will qualify as the highest form of ibadat (prayer). Hence contrary to the fatwas, yoga as a spiritual pursuit is very much permissible in Islam.

It's universally proven that yoga brings peace of mind, and on that count yoga is almost obligatory for Muslims. As Islam means peace, peace of mind is a prerequisite for one to be truly following Allah's only religion.

This leaves only one ground for orthodox mullahs to frown at yoga: that yoga stems from polytheist beliefs of Hinduism. But when yoga means union, how can it be linked to polytheist beliefs? In fact, yoga takes one away from polytheism and leads to Advaita, which is in perfect agreement with the doctrine of tauhid.

The time has come for ulemas to dispel this mistaken understanding of the real essence of Islam. Else history will accuse them of doing a great disservice to Islam and unwittingly leading innocent Muslims towards polytheism.

An enlightening article. What is the criteria and qualification to be in the national fatwa council of malaysia. Since yoga is declared fatwa, what will happen to muslims who don't adhere to the rule ?
What will the rest of the world think of malaysia of such a ruling ?
All religion is good. If GOD wants the human race to be only one colour and one
religion, then why is it not so ?
It's the individual and his mind at fault, who thinks his religion is greater than another religion. What is religion anyway, if there is no compassion and
humility and tolerance. No man is an island. All humans are created equal.

Pls allow me to continue the "IF I WERE GOD" series:-

IF I WERE GOD: I would make RPK or Tok Guru Nik Aziz the chairman of National Fatwa Council of Malaysia. These two gentlemen are true muslims who really do understand Islam, treat all races as one human race and make people no longer fear to live happily and peacefully amongst brothers and sisters. All those UMNO bigots and hypocrites will not be forgiven for their plundeirng and stealing of the country's wealth. Anyway, I see that happening latest by 13GE

For you to be at Peace - being a Muslim, those who are at peace, you will have to strive to rid yourself of negative energies such as hate, anger, wrath, vengeance and so on. It is not easy but achievable.

Unfortunately, those who profess themselves to be Muslims, on the contrary, are usually full of anger and hate, which in itself will prevent them from attaining peacefulness - Islam. This contradiction within themselves usually manifest in acts of denying acceptance of others who differ from them.

For a better perspective on ISLAM and to counter the arguments of disbelievers and hypocrites such as that Harunsainy fellow from Perak, do visit mentalbondageinthenameofgod.*********.com

Most who profess to being muslims, are missing the point on how to be a Muslim, big time. That is why they are the least peaceful and usually full of turmoil. They cannot understand why others view them as being absolutely ridiculous. They are put there by their Mullahs, who have NO knowledge of ISLAM, whatsoever.

read what you have written...go on...you are almost there...recant, and feel the epiphany.

call it what you must...way, truth, god...there is no God; life just is.

man is neither good nor bad; by nature, he is selfish to survive. by chance, he learnt that, on average, he gains more than he loses if he lives in a group, and for the group to cohere, he must give to receive.

there is no God. no need. it's all within you.

In simpler explanation it is "devil in disguise".
Humans are known to be greedy and manipulative irrespective of race and religion.
In Malaysia we already knew of greedy judges and manipulative monarchs.
Whatever written by Raja Petra in this article is nothing new but as a stark reminder to all of us.
Those in high positions and those manipulative ones hiding behind the name of religion are reading this as well. They are not pleased with Raja petra.
But only those with the minds of Raja petra will be bold to screw them right.

There is only one race, and that is the human race

There is only one religion, and that is the religion of love.

God made man in diverse forms that man may learn to love the diversity of God's creation. Look deep into every religion of the world... and you will discover God's instruction to man to love and serve mankind. That is the only path to heaven. Those who cannot understand this will roast in a hell of their own making.

Muslim: one who believes in God, the One God, and does what God commands, which is to serve mankind. Aiyah, in this case our Slime Minister, Nasib Rozak is a true Muslim, because he believes in the one God, and does what God Command. When he swears on the Qur'an and when he prays, he feels that he is praying and swearing at himself, therefore he is God, further since he regards all his underlings as sub-human (i.e. how else would he allow any two humans to die for him?), his IS mankind. Therefore serving himself is serving God and Mankind. So semua-nya OK!

Good article. But I have a few questians.
1) Did God made a mistake? God is perfect -right? Then how come He revealed the same ( Almost same except some changes, like Abraham was to sacrifice Issac in the Torah but Ishmael in the Quran ?) teachings and prophets to the Jews first, then the prophet Muhammad? Isn't once is enough? Let thetruth be revealed.
2) If Islam means peace, how come there was so much killings and bloodshed in the beginning of Islam until now?Even in the house of Muhammad.
3) If Islam is good why it has to forbid one from leaving? People like good things- right? No need to force one to take it.
4) What is the business of Muslims to force all to believe in Islam? Because they love others and wants them to go to Paradise?
5) Why did Islam forbid the eating of certain animals and taking of alcohol if it said God created all things? To discipline us?
6) Why Muslim can have four wives, and not two or three or ten? Why the women would not support this if it is God's will?
7) Is it true that there are 72 virgins in paradise for each Muslim men who made it? They are Muslim virgin - right? Infidel virgin cannot go to paradise?
smilies/cool.gif If God is omnipresent, why Muslims have to go to the Kaaba or face the Kaaba? He can hear us any where we face - right?
9) Why a Muslim must be buried according to Muslim rites if he is just dust. If not the dead cannot go to paradice? The soul - right?
10) Why the Hadith laws are so inhuman, if God is most merciful, like stoning an adulterer to death?

We can know the tree by its fruits - right? Jesus said that.

We have seen how an imam was hoodwinked to be present at the faggots swearing in the Wilayah mosque, have we not?

During this Ramadhan, you will see that on the first week there are many people converged to the mosque to perform the Maghrib prayers, breaking the iftar and than prays Isyak. These will be followed by the "tarawith" prayers. Than on the 2nd and 3rd week the crowd would dissapear. Only a handful of people will be at the mosque during the final week of Ramadhan.

What dies that tells you? As RPK said Muslims only think of rituals. . ., and even so, they get tired of doing the rituals after sometimes.

No surprising for people taking bribes to do Umrah every year, they thought the ritual could launder (clean) their money!

As RPK rendered it so well as with our breathing, digestion and all our bodily function that goes on even while we sleep. This simply mean,we do not live,we are all being lived by GOD.This is what Inshaallah mean to the muslim and Thy will be done with the christians.Religion is one,if we remove the label Islam, hiduism,Buddism,Taoism,Christianity,Judism, etc. We are all plugged into the same fountain of life.

RPK,

I think that god is the most confused term in the human race. The Christians, Jews and Muslims immediately think of Jehovah. They think he is the creator of the universe, just because he claims so. We now know that the Universe came into existence 15 billion years ago and the solar system was formed only less than 5 billion years ago. Intelligent man only came into existence in the last 500,000 years ago. There are two astronomical ages, as far as man is concerned: one is the formation of the universe and the second is the formation of our solar system.

So what was god doing for 14 billion years before man came into existence to sing praises of how great he is? Sleeping all the time? Or was he there all the time, observing all events, whether geological or human. If he did not interfere in the geological events, why must we think he interferes in human affairs.

Like you, I always ask what is your concept of god? Is he the one from the middle east religions, who breaks his own commandments by killing? Or is it a universal silent force that observes all? Vengeful or dispassionate?

There is no convincing proof that God exists at all.

Unfortunately human beings are tormented with the the very painful and disturbing primordial fear of death to facilitate survival. And God was naturally invented as a necessity to soothe this pain else life could not go on.

I think the concept of God has contributed to humanity very effectively. However, being haunted by the fear of death, human beings has been driven to kill their own kind, resorted to violence and sufferings merely to suppress this suibliminal fear of death that is simmering inside them.

Believe in god for all you want, but try to understand why you are doing and at the same time be aware that it is all done by human beings to soothe their psychological torments.

Because God is a human invention, there is no such things as god laws carved on stone tablets. If you need to invent any laws to faciliate your own religious beliefs, pls do not impose them on others and infringe the human rights of others.

"God is everywhere" even in the unclean things. If unclean is seen as clean then we have seen God. Does that mean that when there is corruption and we see it as "clean" then we have seen God ? If that's the conclusion then you know not what I have said.

There is a statue in nepal with an eye looking out. This is called the "all seeing eye." Some will see it as peaceful, others see it as wrathful. And yet others see it as smiling, compassionate etc. It is the same statue for everyone and yet each of them see it differently. The difference lies within.

10 people bowing towards mecca or the altar or whatever form of reverent posture will have 10 different events going on within. Some would ask for fortunes, others would ask for blessings to get out of their corruption charges. The external posturing is the same but what went on inside are different.

But God is everywhere and each is guided in their own way. To be able to see the world in a grain of sand is to be able to see God.

For buddhists just replace God with love and truth.

RPK: "It is time Malaysians stopped ‘talking’ religion. Religion is not in the rituals you perform. Religion is not in the clothes you wear. Religion is what is in your heart."

Religion may start from the heart, but ultimately it is the mind that matters.

One may feel, believe, and talk till the cow come home. However, what really matters is whether the proper brain neurons are connected to make a person a progressive human being.

For example, one can think, believe all day long, but when a stroke strikes in the brain, one could become a vegetable or a zombie. This is an example of why the brain connections is the most critical factor.

Any religion that do not facilitate to connect the right wires in the higher brain to make humans less of a 'chimpanzee' is not a progressive religion for humanity as a whole. Any religion that suppresses (knowingly or unknowingly) the progressive connections of the higher brain will only catalyse violence and suffereings onto humanity.

sydput wrote "The deeper a person indulges in religion, the more susceptible that person will not abide by logical thinking and do henious crime to himself and damages his soul."

It all depends on what is meant by "indulge in religion", whether the person actually studies the religion and seeks to understand deeper meanings or simply becomes more caught up with ritualistic practices.

And I gave him my interpretation of Muslim: one who believes in God, the One God, and does what God commands, which is to serve mankind.
-------------------------------------------------
...says RPK.

I don't think anyone can dispute that. Everyone should think in that direction. If you are of another faith / religion.... simply replace Muslim with Hindu, Christian, Buddhist etc.

Yes there is ONE God and HE created everyone and everything.

Yet, I fine it puzzling when some speak of 'my god' and 'your god'.

Even more confusing is ... we Muslims are assured of a place in heaven. Non-Muslims are doomed. Did GOD 'haramkan' people of other faiths to enter heaven? Is there a signboard up there which says ... DI LARANG UNTUK KUFUR?

No there is not.

These are created by ignorant people. Please do not assume that you know God and in HIS name, kill, plunder and rape (people or countries and their citizens) and presume that you will go to heaven.
This goes for all who think in those terms.

Wake up to the bigger call of helping your fellow man. Do good to others and do not expect anything in return.

Be humble .... just as God put you up there, HE can, put you 'back to earth' anytime HE wishes.

These are the things I have learnt. But I do not claim to understand HIM. All I do is to talk through experience and interpret logically .... I know God is kind and does things which are good for everyone. But do not even try to question whyme? .... and so on.

Go through misery and do not fret, HE is always there for you.

.... even as you fall, call HIM .... and HE will pick you up.

Dear RPK

May I correct you on this? Putting joss-sticks at the altar, this I consider it Taoism, incl.all the other deities (extraordinary humans who lived a very long time ago). Even putting josssticks to honor ancestors, is sort of like a chinese custome/culture. I know a lot of christians condemn this because it is "praying" to the devil. Actually, I don't really care for that christian god either, because it is an extremely jealous god - it's praying to him & nobody else.

My definition of religion is a COMPULSORY BELIEF in an Almighty God who created this world. Buddhism is NOT a religion, it is merely a teaching, philosophy & a way of life. Real Buddhists do not believe in the existence of God. It is impossible for 99.99% of us to be real Buddhists because it calls for a life without alcohol, dancing, drinking, smoking, swearing, cursing, no meat, no scolding umno or bn govt, no back-biting & if possible, celibacy. I guess if you secretly read some of these Buddhist's teachings, you will be astounded. Because as one commentator wrote recently, Buddhi means 'intellect'. You cannot grasp its real teachings unless you can think deep, ponder & analyse its brilliance.

Do we know better what is God’s grand design?
What grand design? Galaxy canabalizing another galaxy, what a grand design this is. Come on, let's not talk about God or religion or glorify his creation. There is nothing to glorify. Like I said before, we are bunch of arrogant fools who believe that we are so significant in this vast and expanding universe, and warrant the attention of a creator. We are nothing but a tiny speckle of sands in this incomprehensible cosmos. Live you life to the full and be a human being. There is probably no God!

Dear All,

After reading the article and all the comments, I'm very disappointed with some of the comments that started to compare one religion to the other. There is no religion or faith that is more superior than the other.

We are all human beings and we should be thinking about peace and harmony. We should have a pure and sincere heart in order to overcome the obstacles in our lives.

Many people don't even believe the existing of God, including myself. However if anyone believe in God like the way RPK does, then I don't mind they keep believing that.

Whenever there is a call to unite by religion,it actually means to divide the nation. It is a fact which has been repeated over and over again. Can you imagine the Governments of United kingdom, the United States , France , Portugal, Spain, Italy,India,Nepal,China,Singapore,Australia, new Zealand, countries of Central and South America asking the dominant religion to unite ?It is not going to happen in the 21st century in these countries. It only happens in countries where a group of low lifes who use religion to cover up their crimes. They have been doing this for years and whenever the index on corruption goes up,they again call to inite by religion. Why not for a change ,shout loud to round up the criminals who use religion to hoodwink the people

To be able to look beyond religion, race, colour and language?

When you help another person, who is deserving and needs help, without regard to what is in it for you, God smiles on you.

When you believe that justice must be blind, and fight to keep that belief alive, God smiles on you.

When the pain and suffering of another keeps you awake at night, raging against your impotency, God smiles on you.

When you belief in truth, love, fairplay and the freedom to choose, you believe in God.

Give me God, and keep religion to yourselves.

"God has said He knows better what He has planned for us. Maybe it is time to not question or dispute what this plan is because surely, if he is really God who is the Creator of us all, He would have been able to create all of us of one faith and avoid all these disputes and killings in His name."

Yeah! That's why I am an atheist and an agnostic. Do that mean I am qualify to run a Hit Squad, Massage parlour, Brothel and a Gambling den?
Food for thoughts.
What is my guide in life?
Do society really need a religion to tell them what is right and what is wrong?

Good morning, Pete. Well written as usual. I recent asked a Buddhist monk :what is the 'right' way to chant/pray? Is it with a particular pronounciation like a Singhalese or Indian or Thai accent? and his answer? It was: "Chant or pray with a concentrated mind fully focussed on the prayer and a heart full of loving-kindness", that is the right way to chant or pray!". Your comment about the operators filling the joss urns with joss sticks is very apt. In fact, I heard from a member who is part of a group of Buddhist volunteers that there is one old folks home in KL run by the syndicates/underworld lords. Here, the old folks are left to die, (yes, you read it right; to die not to live out their remaining lives) in whatever conditions they are in; be it covered in their own filth or covered with bed-sores. Only thing the old folks are assured of is their funeral rites are taken care of. Why so? The 'operators' believe that by 'offering' to take care of the last rites, they will be absolved of their worldy sins; doesn't matter if their greatest sin is to leave these old people to suffer in their last legs of life! It makes me sick to the core that these 'operators' are of chinese-descent and are scientifically classed as 'homo-sapeins'!smilies/angry.gif Also makes me want to leave the country immediately!

I had enough of hypocrites telling me that I would go to hell if I don't worship God in church every Sunday. As if they know what it really means to be a Christian, they just want to go to church to show off their new cars and brand named handbags and gossip behind people backs. I'm sick of this hypocrisy. Being a Christian, its all in the heart and not on the surface. I can't see what difference it would make when you show up in church every week and yet your heart is pure blackness.

I believe, if your heart is sincere, you acknowledge him, you pray to him, and refrain from ill thoughts and act of evil. It is enough. There is no need to worship, candles, masses, praises, donations. These are all for show, when you're not sincere.

I'm no saint, but nothing changes even though I lost my faith. I hadn't done it all for show.
