(Bernama) - Police will consider a proposal by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to allow peaceful gatherings in stadiums, to avoid demonstrations on roads said deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar.

Ismail said police welcomed the prime minister's proposal, but every application for such gatherings would be studied on a case-by-case basis before approval was given.

"I feel it is a very good suggestion to safeguard peace and harmony as well as avoid incidents like the illegal rally recently. We will have to consider such applications first," he told Bernama when contacted today.

On Sunday, Najib had said that the government was ready allocate a place that was felt suitable for peaceful gatherings, like a stadium, to avoid burdening the public.

Ismail said police would take action against the mastermind and organisers of the Gerakan Mansuhkan ISA (GMI) "illegal rally" in the city on Saturday, after compiling enough evidence to charge them.

"We have to investigate first and if there is enough evidence, we will not hesitate to charge those responsible," he said.

Meanwhile, Gerakan welcomed the prime minister's proposal to provide suitable venues, including stadiums, for people to gather and air their grievances peacefully and orderly.

Gerakan vice-president Datuk Mah Siew Keong said in a statement that it would be better for gatherings to be held within enclosures as it would be more peaceful and easier for the police to provide security.

He said that any gathering should be a "win-win" situation, allowing participants to air their grievances and opinions while allowing the government to better understand the issues at hand.

"People have the right to express their views while the government should also have the channel to listen to the people. General public, business and traffic flow would also not be unnecessarily inconvenienced and affected," he added.

Suhakam vice-chairman Tan Sri Panglima Simon Sipaun in his statement yesterday strongly maintained its stand that the people have a right to participate in a peaceful assembly.

He suggested that in the event where police find it necessary to control or disperse a crowd, proportionate and non-violent methods should be invoked.

Malaysian Bar Council president Ragunath Kesavan meanwhile, said the council denounces the government's over-zealous and abusive show of power in its apparent determination to crush the people's exercise of their rights to the twin freedoms of assembly and expression, during the anti-ISA rallies.

"We also urge the government to immediately heed the calls for reform and to respect the rule of law and fundamental rights, including the right of all concerned individuals to assemble peacefully to express their opinions," he said in a statement.

Be careful, this is a set up!! A death trap of sort. the next thing bound to happen is the whole stadium collapse.

Haha...He think the rakyat are stupid! What's the point of a demonstration when you do it out of sight where nobody even know you exist. I got better idea, next time UMNo youth want to demonstrate, let the government ferry them to a pulau somewhere off the coast of Pahang!

a rally in a stadium is like having sex without the penetration - might still workable but wheres the fun? what a joke maybe next time instead of marching on the streets, we should:-
1. stop using mobile phones
2. stop fueling our cars
3. stop using public transport(only drive if someone is dying)
4. stop surfing internet using the big 3(difficult, i know smilies/tongue.gif )
5. stop going out just stay at home( don't even watch tv! )

if we stop doing these on that particular day, maybe the RM100 to RM200 Million loss of revenue can be achieved. pity the new federal minister who tried to be smart. lets help him to achieve his estimates

What is legal may not be right or good. What is right or good may not be legal. If the law itself violates basic rights and principles then we have an unjust law. Such laws usually exist when we have dictators, leaders with big ego, manipulators and leaders who believe in using convenient means to achieve its objective.

betul ke ni? PR apply for another anti ISA rally at Bukit Jalil and see if they give approval. if they do, we show them the kind of crowd we can bring in. But PDRM talk only, they won't give approval or last minute will pull back approval.

Are we to understand that public servants (police) will consider a proposal from their masters (represented by PM)? In Malaysia, those at present in power cannot differentiate between the masters and the servants. The servants (police) who are paid by the masters beat them up regularly.
There is something wrong with Malaysia. Probably when there is a change of goverment, a big shakeup of the police force will be needed to weed out the rubbish.

What a brainless suggestion...
A Peaceful Rally/Demo/Protest is meant to create awareness among those who do not realise "What's Wrong"...
To have it in the stadium?
To show the football field & chairs that they had missed out certain important things in their life? They must be thinking we are fools...

We always have peaceful demonstrations in stadiums, especially during football matches. We demo our emotions to the full extent, including yelling our throats sore. Same thing during concerts/shows. No need for the police to graciously grant us our own rights to do that.

How 'bout doing some serious thinking? How 'bout thinking outside your tiny little box of a mind? How 'bout thinking that perhaps using the police to facilitate the peaceful demos, then perhaps we Malaysians can show that we are a much matured lot than you buggers up there think in your tiny minds). How 'bout getting out of the bullying mode and try to surprise and shock us into paralysis by being friendly and humane?

Yes, there was a big commotion and ultimately a massive traffic congestion in the city of KL inevitably caused by the action of the people taking to the streets.

But by large, the major caused of it was because of the road blocks and cordoning of roads leading to the respective areas by the police which may have had the biggest impact.

Will the police ever going to give permits to peaceful demonstrations? No, I don''t believe they ever will.

They should allow peaceful, organised and controlled gatherings/demonstrations and as such, able to properly organised traffic control and other related issues in order to minimise the impact of such events.

But instead, they prefer to quash all and everything that stands in their way (regardless by means of physical force or itimidation)all because of political biasm.

A Lousy & STUPID proposal ?
Stadiums were built for entertainments & public amusements like BOLA SEPAK and OLYMPIC GAMES etc etc only.
Rallies to effect GOOD Positive Changes to improve a BETTER Color Blind Malaysia must always be in the open for all to see their TRUE Awakening Spirit.

Other than stadiums, rally should be allowed to be held in OPEN-AIR and people-frequented places.

Even UK allows that. The point of a rally is not only to protest but also to create awareness among those who are not aware yet.

Places like Dataran Merdeka, Istana Negara and certain roads should be allowed.

Me: I can accept this, provided that we get to use Stadium Nasional Bukit Jalil, with minimal fees, and NO traffic jams due to police sealing or narrowing roads.

Them: OK, but in your fcukking dreams!
