1,535 deaths in custody, what are we waiting for?

By Farish A. Noor

The term ‘Asubhabhavana’ is familiar with many historians of Buddhist theology by now, for it refers to a meditative mode of introspection that has become ritual practice over the centuries.

In layman’s terms, Asubhabhavana refers to the simple process of self-reflection and mental back-tracking where one contemplates the manifold paths, steps and mis-steps that were taken to get us to where we are today; prompting the simple yet direct question: “Why have I become what I am today, and what were the mistakes that I made that continue to hurt me now?”

As it is with individual subjectivities, so is it with states, governments and institutions. For when we look at the process of historical development and decline of so many post-colonial societies we also need to ask what were the steps and mis-steps that were taken to get them to their present state of degeneration and decline?

A case in point is the recent one in Malaysia, where a young political assistant to the DAP opposition party was found dead under the most suspicious of circumstances. The young man had been summoned by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to its offices in order to answer some questions related to allegations of corrupt political practice. The next time anyone sees him, he is found lying dead on the rooftop of the building next door. Needless to say the fact that the young man may have died while under MACC custody begs the immediate and obvious questions: How did he die, and why? This is the burning question that has brought Malaysians of all walks of life, across the political divide, together. Already the same question is being asked even by the component parties of the BN ruling coalition, and prominent BN leaders have likewise called for an enquiry into what happened that day at the MACC office.

Sadly Malaysia’s convoluted politics has begun to twist the facts of the case. The death of the young man has been turned into a racial-ethnic issue, with the vernacular Malay press in particular arguing that those who question the official version of the story are actually working to undermine the Malaysian government and its related public institutions that are dominated by Malaysian Malays. But no amount of spin can alter the fact that the death of the young man was mysterious to say the least; and no amount of spin can alter the fact that Malaysians want to know the truth.

MACC is an arm of BN/UMNO. The sole purpose of MACC (like the PDRM) is to serve its political master ie to seek and destroy any opposition at ALL cost.

The Two- Party Political System will become a reality.
The whole BeEnd Federal Government must be replaced by a "Color Blind Federal Malaysian Government".
Then only will Our Public Institutions be reformed positively.

From the past two write-ups. I am a little bit confused.
you used to be a well over all good writer..but i think , to me , you have swayed sides...for the better or the worse..( from a readers view or from your view, left to be answered?)...well that is my opinion. Is there an agenda which we the readers dont know?

Please forgive me if I have, in my uneducated thinking come up with this conclusion.

Shalom and may the Lord Allah shine his light on all of us.

Mr Farish,

The heading "arresting the slide in our institutions..." drew me to yr piece. It's now end-July 2009, let's stop kidding ourselves: this slide is never going to be halted as long as BN remains in power.

It's time you Malays stood up, speak out for Malaysia's future. For decades, Lim Kit Siang, Karpal Singh, even Lim Guan Eng went to jail for one year, & many non-Malays spoke out against the abuses by the bn govt. Look at what happened to MGG Pillai, he raved & ranted for years, died of heart attack & how many thanked him for his work. Very few.

LKS & Karpal Singh are both old now - they are our treasures many failed to appreciate. But both men have impeccable integrity credibility & wisdom. Fortunately we also have Dr Bakri Musa, Dr Azly Rahman, DS Zaid Ibrahim, and our most loved RPK (yes!) ... but it's not enough. Malays - the majority population must speak out against corruption and abuse of power. We need Malays to take the lead - maybe a change might take place? Why don't you do something abt this?

Najibs Affidavit

I, Najib swear to arrest the decline of my instituition. our public instituition. The current method being employed for interogation will be reviewed urgently and decisively to ensure no repeat of this issue and no evidence of traceback can be found. On top of that, a Royal Commission with the interest to resolve inquiries that may arise from alleged torture mistreatment during interogation will be carried out without borders and discrimnination to the chinese carried out fairly.
