Chua Jui Meng: I reject UMNO-dominated Barisan Nasional and go for change PDF Print

There has been much speculation recently in the media as what my next move in politics would be. Today (July 18, 2009) I make one of the most important decisions of my life, to leave the MCA and to join PKR. A few days ago, I resigned as chairman of MCA Bakri division, a post I have held for 23 years, freeing me to undertake a fresh struggle for the realisation of my vision for reforms. These are contained in the manifestos I wrote during the MCA presidential elections of 2005 and 2008.

Today I announce that I am resigning as a member of MCA. Now I announce I am joining PKR. Today I am persuaded that I am standing on the right side of history at a defining and critical moment of our nation’s history. What has compelled me to do so?

The 2008 general elections witnessed the passionate desire of 52 percent of Peninsular Malaysians for change. This astounding voting power gave birth for the first time to a two-party system. As a result, we have seen a hitherto unseen phenomena of UMNO leaders saying “if we do not change, the people will change the government”.

Out of this desperation, Malaysians see the UMNO-led government making some movement towards appeasing the people. That is the fruit of people’s power.

Two-party system undermined by UMNO

Today we see this nascent two-party system under threat, the unrelenting harassment by the Umno-led government to divide and destroy the two-party system, the hard-earned gains of last year’s general election.

We see the abuse of power in the use of the federal institutions to harass, persecute and prosecute the leaders of the opposition, institutions that were supposed to protect the rights of the citizens of Malaysia.

The tragic death of 30-year-old Teoh Beng Hock is the consequence of one such institution (MACC) going overboard in its action. The seizure of power in Perak, the wooing of PAS by UMNO to form a unity government based on race and religion, the farcical persecution and prosecution of Anwar Ibrahim once again for sodomy despite the reports of two hospitals – one from General Hospital Kuala Lumpur – to the contrary, all these are indicative of a pattern of attempts to topple this precious two-party system.

It seeks to remove the people’s new-found choice to choose between two political fronts. If this conspiracy succeeds UMNO will continue to be the dominant political party going back to its old ways unfettered.

It is in these times of trouble and crisis for PKR and Pakatan Rakyat that has precipitated my decision to join them. It is in these difficult circumstances that I want to contribute in humility to the preservation of this two-party system. My hope is that ordinary Malaysians will stand up and be counted in the struggle to protect, preserve and promote the growth of this system. Count me in.

There are those who would say that Chua Jui Meng is already past his useful shelf life. That he is an MCA discard seeking to re-ignite his political career in PKR.

There are two dangers with picking up BN discards - 1) incumbents of the PR parties may feel short-changed because these newcomers may enjoy an express path to the top and 2) these newcomers are likely to bring with them BN attitudes and mentality. The corruption of Gerakan by MCA dropouts comes to mind.

Having said that, we must also keep in mind the immediate goal of dislodging the BN from federal power. Anyone who is an enemy of the BN must be accepted as an ally of the PR. The PR must grow in numbers both at leadership and grassroots levels.

Nevertheless, Anwar has to watch out for moles coming in with a specific agenda of destroying the PR from within.

These are challenging times calling for wise leadership.

Chua I know how you feel. Being a chairman of MCA Bakri they didn't even allow you to stand for elections. Sometimes I feel they are too much but anyway we welcome you to Pakatan. I hope you will make a difference.

When I was 18 years old, I was invited to join as member of political party,I just laugh off, until today, ever since I was registered as a Voter, I had gone through almost 6 General Elections, never have I voted for the ruling party, all the time was opposition, whether it is DAP or Pas,until today, all my families all voted for the oppositions,We realised from long time ago, what is good for the people and bad for the people, we have no interest in politic, we do not need a platform to participate in politic, we remain a good citizen and support the party that really care for people, unlike Chua Jui Meng, he had been in the politic for so long, and only now he realised his bridge is burning, he had a no return way, and he needed a Platform to continue his Political ambitious, when he joined the PR, the PR trust him, and we hope we also trust, as what he declared from his utmost goodfaith, will he be a good Politician to help the people, or just a platform to satisfy his personal desire!History will prove it, and let's wait and see, how far he can go!

Chua Jui Meng said something which I believe deeply here and is to ensure the 2 party system is respected base on elected democracy. If PAS and UMNO get together, the Malay votes will again be monopolise and BN UMNO will be back to their old ways. Nobody will gain here except to see a crumbling country.

lets give him a benefit of doubt. But his joining PKR is more positive than negative and he can bring his experience of being in govt to help the new PR group. so use his strengths. the man was never a racist guy and his belief in the 2 party system is good and should be welcome. he is a big name regardless of what people say about him. PR needs more people to switch based on beliefs of a fair malaysia.

If Pak HeLah is coming to Pakatan , i think some of us can tolerate him .
As he is just changing his bed to sleep.
Afterall , he did woke up to say abolish the god damn ISA.
However not Mahathir , as i think all of us will wish mahathir " MatiKudasai ".
Its a new "malay-japanese" word i pick up in the MT comment section.
Khir Bin Toyol wanna join Pakatan?
We will be happy to supply to him an old sampan.
He can row all the way back to Indon and we will not stop him.

Let's welcome Jui Meng . Just like we extend our welcome to Zaid.
We use to boo at Zaid when he was in umno .
But now we cheer on for Zaid , no more booing.
Even if Soi Lek wants to join PR , let him in. As he committed no crime .
As for trojan or traitor , we wont know.
Even using a good branded anti virus scanner the computer still gets infected somehow or another.
We wont know .
Example, PAS is a member of Pakatan.
But its president and deputy held secret talks with the umno .
We wont know right?
Luckily Tok Guru deflected them.

We even have the Ronnie Liu versus Wee Choo Keong spats.
Therefore , Lim KS must straighten his guys and Anwar must straighten his guys.
Just like Nik Aziz did.

Therefore ,please welcome Jui Meng and his comrades.
Pakatan needs more people of such caliber.
A friendly reminder is " No more bribing please , we are Pakatan ".

He took the trouble to cross over to a multiracial party.....

He has the experience and he's been there compared to many of the candle carrying novices we have currently in the PR......give him a go....3 months from now we will know whether he is heads and shoulders above the rest.....

The rakyat are looking for results....stay and deliver if you can .....otherwise please get out of the way....

Slowly but surely most of the other BN components will cross over. Our salute to SAPP for being brave enough to make the 1st move.

For those who still cannot see that BN is sinking and being rejected by the rakyat too bad.

For Mr Samy Velu... his best option now is to disolve MIC and apply to join HINDRAF

Where's the Malay leaders who could change the future of Malaysia if they jump ship? R they so comfy in their cozy homes that they can't c the need for change in this country? PKR must go knock on their doors and ask them to join the 'change'. Yes We CAN!

So now the MCA Gerakan and MIC are all accomplices to murder and torture.
Supporting, associating, and continuance of their allegiance makes them guilty by association.

Need to make them accountable for this hell.

No matter what you ppl commented above, the truth is UMNO is suppressing (as in other fields too) the daring and working MCA members. The only ones left behind are dogs to their master UMNO. Datuk Chua is a fine example. His vision doesn't go with UMNO's and therefore he has been stopped in his tracks. The only ballgame UMNO allows MCA to play is education and Chinese schools and of course, the UMNO goons' balls.

Datuk Chua Jui Meng is a man of principle, who rejected UMNO dominated BN. PKR was formed by members were in one way or another, associated with other political parties. Therefore CJM was in the same predicament. Anyone who is an enemy of PKR's enemy UMNO, must be considered as a dear friend. I fervently trust that this man can contribute and strenghten PKR with his wide experience!

The death of Teoh is "the straw that breaks the camel's back" ie. Chua's back.At least when confronted by stark EVIL he knows how to turn away.

The rest are not camels but dogs, they just want to ride along to enjoy the goodies even in the FACE of EVIL and INJUSTICE!!!!! Babi Negara!!!! If you take the side of evil and don't oppose it the day will come when your children will be destroyed by this evil. Then you get to "REAP what you SOW."

Let's welcome Datuk Chua. He used to be my teacher before he left to do his law some forty-eight years ago. I remember he was a good teacher. I am sure he is a good man. I suspect he is too intellectual for the mainstream MCA members; hence his inability to reach the top and change the party from within. PR needs people lik Datuk Chua, not those half-baked DAPers, who basically don't understand administration. People like LKS and LGE simply don't have any concept about managing their own party, let alone state governments!

Well put. Applause, applause. Welcome Dato Chua. All things considered, you have decided to join our struggle due to the factors you mentioned above. We take it on face value, for we don't know and won't know what really is in your heart. We shall let our leaders, who we trust, to decide how best to utilise your services and deal with you as you embark on this journey. We can change our leaders too if they veer away from the course of our struggle.

Dato Chua, I am not surprised that of the stalwarts of MCA, your conscience has dictated you to perform in Pakatan Rakyat. Still as a freshie, even though your past performer as a principled parliamentarian stands out, you will be cautiously welcomed for as always you will be regarded less a friend but more of an enemy of an enemy. You are nowhere past your shelf life. Au contraire you are indeed a man with many songs still unsung given your intellectual approach, not very different from one Dr.Chua Soi Lek. In laymman's parlance, you guys have got balls.
