By Mohsin Abdullah (SinChew Daily)

OF LATE many readers of Chinese newspapers, ask a lot of questions about Malay language paper Utusan Malaysia. I won’t repeat the questions. Suffice to say they been asking “why Utusan do this, do that?”

I think we all know what “this and that” means. And I’m not going to try to answer the queries either. But what I want to do is to take readers on a journey back in time. Through a book published in 2001 and written by Said Zahari, one of the greatest journalists in the world.

Said Zahari or Pak Said as he is fondly known was editor of Utusan Melayu in 1959 (the paper as we know today is called Utusan Malaysia but the original name has been retained for the company running it ie Kumpulan Utusan Melayu or the Utusan Melayu Group .)

The book I am talking about is entitled “Dark Clouds At Dawn, a political memoir. ” What better way to know Utusan than to read a book written by its former editor, especially as illustrious as Pak Said. To many, Pak Said is a symbol of press freedom.

“Dark Clouds At Dawn ,a political memoir ” is not only about Utusan, the newspaper. It’s ,well, a political memoir as its title suggest, written by a journalist and not a historian. In the words of Pak Said, “I have written this book as a journalist , reporting and commenting on what I saw and experienced ,what I felt from my own perceptions and observations of people, the situation and events of the period”. The “period” was in the 1950s and 1960s in Malaya and Singapore. And one of its defining moment was the Utusan Melayu strike of 1961.

From the pages of “Dark Clouds At Dawn , a political memoir”, we learn that “ Utusan Melayu was a thorn in Britain colonial flesh.” We readers are told that “ Utusan Melayu was an independent paper ” but had angered UMNO and incurred the wrath of Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Razak Hussein, Syed Jaafar Albar the ‘Lion of UMNO and others.
Needless to say, UMNO wanted control. We read in one of the pages of “Dark Clouds At Dawn, a political memoir,” that Syed Jaafar Albar had demanded that “ Utusan Melayu must refer to us first before writing it’s editorials”.

The book tells us that a four pronged policy was drawn up by UMNO, dubbed “ surrender terms,” for Utusan Melayu to follow.
An UMNO strongman from Terengganu, Ibrahim Fikri , was assigned by the party leadership to hand over the “surrender terms” to the Editor of Utusan Melayu, Said Zahari. It was July 1961.

As we read on, we learn that Pak Said and his journalists “wanted to ensure Utusan Melayu continue to be an independent national newspaper, not controlled by any political party”.

“ Our stand was that only an Utusan Melayu that was free from such control could truly serve religion, country and all Malay people, not just a handful in a political party.

Only with a free policy could Utusan Melayu be the voice of the people, fighting for the interests of the people with sincerity, integrity and courage”, wrote Pak Said.

He went on to write. “ But UMNO wanted Utusan Melayu to be totally different. That Utusan Melayu should belong to UMNO and should only serve that political party”.

Hence on July 21 1961, Pak Said led his journalists and other workers of Utusan Melayu to go on strike and fought against the UMNO take over plan. After days went by, Pak Said left Kuala Lumpur to visit the Utusan Melayu staff who were also carrying out the strike at the newspaper office in Singapore. But when Pak Said wanted to return to Malaya, he was prohibited from entering Johor Baru. By order of the then Foreign Minister of Malaya he was instructed to turn back to Singapore.

“From that day, I lost contact with the strikers’ camp in Jalan Chan Sow Lin ” (the Utusan Melayu office in Kuala Lumpur,) wrote Pak Said. Thus the Utusan Melayu strike failed. It lasted 90 days. UMNO had won.

Perhaps the UMNO victory was imminent. Pak Said had written:
“On the day Ibrahim Fikri walked into my office to hand me his four pronged surrender “terms”, I knew that the Utusan Melayu, the independent national newspaper for more than two decades, was dead. What lived on was a bogus Utusan Melayu.

utusan is there for one purpose that is to divide the country and ensure the Malays to support UMNO while UMNO leaders skim this country's wealth in the name of the Malays. Most Malays are very aware of this and the mask of UMNO.

I have many very good Malay friends, but by and large the Malays in UMNO, Utusan, PDRM, Judiciary, AG Chambers, EC, and MACC are getting uglier and uglier, crueler and crueler. Even murder is child play to them.
They behave like devils and do not believe in the hereafter. They have no conscience. I wonder if they believe in God.

To be perfectly honest, i don't think any newspaper in the country currently, be it mainstream or serving particular memberships or groups, is absolutely independent and impartial in their reporting. It is, i suppose, to be expected. But when you see pathetic attempts by papers like utusan, nst,and the like to appear professional yet openly run down people who clearly fight for justice and truth, with tabloid-style journalism, it's enough to make me not to want to read them at all. Each newspaper will have to serve its masters, granted, but in this country apparently it's too much to expect a tell-it-like-it-is journalism, at least when it comes to real news and news analysis. CNN, BBC and the so-called the big newspaper boys of the world are no angel themselves, but at least as far as real news are concerned, they report it as faithfully as the can (most times) and allow equal views from both sides of the divide (most times). Can an article by TG Nik Aziz be printed faithfully in the pages of utusan or NST? You telling me astora jabat is more of a religious authority than TG Nik Aziz?

UMNO's survival depends on the creation of fear and hatred among the malays towards other races in this country, especially the chinese. The BTN programme sponsored by UMNO using our tax payers' money is to brainwash the government servants and the young malays to hate the other races and look at them as second class citizens. Utusan is the mouth piece and spinning tools to continue to create disunity and disharmony among the races in order for the malays to continue supporting UMNO.Utusan will keep on stirring up racial emotion and bark out loud all their racist remarks to create recial tension among the malays and the non malays...and they are doing this day in day out with fire and fury and don't give a damn if this country would plunge into a riot, this is their purpose...

My comment here related to the sarcastic and insensitice "Senyum Kambing" cartoon published yesterday in Utusan Malaysia with its wording "Jatuh, Lompat atau Ditolak" which clearly insinuating the late Teoh either jumped, fell or was pushed to his death, which practically put him to be blamed and not the MACC at all.

As a Malay and a Muslim I always tell people that I (http://khairul-today.********.com) can tolerate even the most stupid people who does not know how to behave according to the circumstances, but I cannot tolerate with people like Utusan Malaysia who is very PROUD of their STUPIDITY.

At this moment of time when each of the family member of the late Teoh is in deep sadness and at the time when no word in dictionary can describe the extreme sorrow suffered by his fiancee who by right went to register theIr marriage yesterday, this heartless Utusan Malaysia brought shame to all Malays who are well known for their politeness and good manners, by show-casing this "Senyum Kambing" with the most sarcastic words "jatuh, lompat atau ditolak" which all the three words denote that the late Teoh is the one that 100% at fault.

It's very clear that this people in Utusan Malaysia do not subscribe to even the basic decency as a human-being. The least they can do is to keep quiet but they choose to be hated by putting this kind of dialog of 'Senyum kambing' in the front page of Utusan Malaysia.

Again as a Muslim and a Malay, if I have my way, I myself want to go to each house to meet the occupants who have already bought this Utusan Malaysia edition and explain to them that the real Muslim will not have such a disrespect towards other family in grievances.

I (http://khairul-today.********.com) also wish I can go to each each newspaper vendor and use all my savings to buy whatever balance of unsold Utusan Malaysia left and then drive to the nearest Indah Water pond to dump all these edition of Utusan Malaysia so that nobody else can buy and read such a heartless comment through this 'Senyum Kambing' which in fact can seed hatred towards the Malay itself. This is the least as a human-being that I wish I could do to show that not all Muslim and Malays are so heartless like this Utusan Malaysia!!
