The writer said they were trying to confirm rumors that many Muslim teenagers were being converted to Christianity in Kuala Lumpur's churches every Sunday. He described how they tasted communion wafers to blend in with the crowd, but found no evidence to support the rumors.

The investigation poses a fresh challenge for the government in its efforts to reduce religious friction in this ethnic Malay Muslim-majority country, where religious minorities have complained that their rights are being sidelined in favor of Islam.

A churchgoer filed a police complaint last week after reading an article in the monthly Malay-language Al-Islam magazine written by a contributor who described how he attended a Roman Catholic mass with his friend and hid his Muslim identity.

The writer said they were trying to confirm rumors that many Muslim teenagers were being converted to Christianity in Kuala Lumpur's churches every Sunday. He described how they tasted communion wafers to blend in with the crowd, but found no evidence to support the rumors.

Rev. Lawrence Andrew, the editor of the Herald, the Catholic church's main publication in Malaysia, said the men had "insulted the Christians" through their actions.

"For us, this is a very holy matter," Andrew told The Associated Press. "They have shown disregard, disrespect. ... So we are very upset about this."

Representatives of Al-Islam, which writes about Islamic teachings and news, could not immediately be contacted.

Police federal crime investigations head Mohamad Bakri Zinin said officials were investigating the two men for possibly causing religious disharmony--a crime that carries a prison sentence of up to five years.

Joachim Francis Xavier, the Catholic man who filed the police complaint, said the men had been irresponsible and that their actions could cause religious tensions.

"If everyone starts to intrude into each other's services and write about it, there will be chaos," Xavier said.

He noted that non-Christians were welcome to attend church ceremonies, but they cannot take communion. The magazine article also indicated the men had spat out the communion wafer because they took a photograph of it partially bitten.

Christian, Buddhist and Hindu minorities--who comprise about one-third of Malaysia's population--often say their constitutional right to practice religion freely has come under threat from Muslim-dominated authorities. The government denies any discrimination.

Religious disputes include a court battle between the Catholic church and the government over a 2007 order banning non-Muslims from translating God as "Allah" in their literature. The government says its use would confuse Muslims, but Christians say the ban is unconstitutional.

There was a time when I was child that religion was very much a private matter with no interference from the State. Sigh! smilies/cry.gif

Some people just love to play God, as if they have nothing else better to do but to stir racial friction. If anyone wishes to speak to God on a one to one basis, by all means, DO SO!! but don't have to drag others into the mud just to spike other people's religion!!!

Malaysia as a nation, is turning upside down in every move it makes!!!

I note with not much concern but more of surprise that this could be the case of some naughty people out to discredit harmony. Why now? why not before? ask ourselves this question, who stands to gain most from this issue? its UMNO!!! they are the ones who will do anything to stir up some controversy so that people look the other way and forget the main issue here...UMNO has to go!!!!!

It always amazes me that whenever a Malaysian feels slighted the first thing he does is file a police report

You know that unless you have a muslim name that your report will be mislaid

What do other people in other countries do about minor insults??

You could 'turn the other cheek' and not be like muslims who are ultra sensitive about everything... because they are so insecure

You could sue the person who offends you... but the fate of that process would be most likely negative in a muslim dominated court system

You could write a letter to the editor .... *densemy splits his sides with laughter*

It really looks like you just gotta shut up until the next election when things MIGHT change. But there are no guarantees of that even if there is a change in government. So dont go holding your breath

Please let the issue die down!!! Don't let the Media use it to their advantage to spin lies on behalf of UMNo.

Yes, religion is a private matter. Ultimately, it's the individual who has to face the truth when he/she is laid to rest.

To the two Muslims who attended mass. They took Holy Communion to BLEND with the crowd. That' a really stupid excuse.
Anyone who attends mass in a Catholic Church can vouch that not ALL Catholics take Holy Communion. The real reason is probably to take a photograph of it, not realising that it is a serious matter to the Catholic church and WRONG.
But then, I have noticed that in Malaysia, quite a number of people do not know what is right and what is wrong.
Taking and giving bribes is not wrong.
Plundering the nation by either giving or receiving overpriced projects is not wrong.
Extremists using religion to persecute non Muslims is not wrong
Must be something wrong in their upbringing. Really reflects badly on their parents.

What Jesus taught seemed failed in some Christians. Just let them eat and spit out. The bad ones can do millions of humiliation and hurts to Jesus, but they will never succeed to deny Him.

Mana pemimpin kristian didalam BN? mana suara kamu? kenapa sepi membisu?....

It will be interesting to see whether the responsible authorities are committed to enforcing the law without fear or favour. There is a crises of confidence among the people regarding the ability, conviction and competence of the responsible government authorities to implement the spirit and letter of the law. Sad.

PM Najib Razak is going around talking about his 1Malaysia when non Muslim Malaysians are having to put up with body snatching, forced conversions to Islam and now acts of sacrilege against non Muslim religions in Malaysia. From the on going Talibanization of Christian Mission Schools to the creeping Islamization of the civil service, schools and public higher education institutions, the two faced BN/Umno regime seems to be supporting such aggression on minorities in this country by Muslim zealots aligned to Umno. One thing is for sure, what these so-called Muslims are doing are actually against the teachings of Islam...More http://*********.********.com/...html#links

It's quite easy to haul up the people as these so called Muslims reported in an Islamic magazine their 'adventure' in a church on the pretext of finding evidence that churches are converting Muslims to Christians.

I wonder what is their real intention? Protecting their religion? No wonder Islam and Muslims' reputation among the non muslims are getting worse by the day. Are these real Muslims? I doubt. And the government should really consider revoking the license of this magazine.

But we all know the UMNO government will delay in doing it. They have to appease the extremist. It will be a totally different story if these acts were to be done by a non muslim magazine.
