Another factor that could have contributed to PAS' lacklustre performance in Manik Urai was the last-minute appearance of Nasharuddin Mat Isa in the constituency, seen by many as the "killer" of PAS' prosepcts.

Translated by DOMINIC LOH/Sin Chew Daily

As widely anticipated, UMNO has been unable to turn the tide in the just concluded Manik Urai by-election. However, the party has outperformed itself compared to last year's general elections, losing only by a very thin margin of 65 votes!

PAS candidate Ismail Yaakob won by a respectable margin of 1,352 votes during the last general elections, but in merely a year and a half, Mohd Fauzi Abdullah, tasked to defend PAS' seat in the by-election after the former's death, took only 5,348 votes, defeating BN's Tuan Aziz Tuan Mat who managed to secure a total of 5,283 votes, much to the surprise of everyone.

To PAS, in particular menteri besar Datuk Nik Aziz, the by-election should sound a warning bell, as Manik Urai is a typical Malay constituency, and the much favoured PAS barely managed to hold on to it after a truly tough fight.

In Kelantan, BN's economic slogans didn't quite work out in the past, even in that battle just before Manik Urai, BN could only make it with the help of mail ballots in Pengkalan Pasir.

What has actually brought this twist of fate in Manik Urai this time round?

UMNO has fought a wonderful battle this time, thanks to the strategies of DPM cum UMNO deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. Muhyiddin has aimed right at the crack that has started to emerge within PAS and basked in its aftermath.

Other than promising a new bridge for Manik Urai, Muhyiddin has not made any other significant announcement on local development, giving the public an impression of inadequacy. That said, UMNO was actually quietly planning its moves, and did not get into heads-on clashes with PAS in doing so throughout the entire electoral process. Instead, it has banked on the opportunity arising from PAS' internal conflicts to divert the voters' support.

Another factor that could have contributed to PAS' lacklustre performance in Manik Urai was the last-minute appearance of Nasharuddin Mat Isa in the constituency, seen by many as the "killer" of PAS' prosepcts.

Many feel that this deputy president has only worked to tip the balance in the rival's favour, and many agree that he should have been served an embargo by the state liaison committee, for he has always advocated a dialogue with UMNO, resulting in the emergence of contradicting forces within the party.

However, PAS' stand has been unsteady, and finally decided to let Nasharuddin make a brief appearance, which proved only that a crack indeed had formed within the party, allowing UMNO to hit right at its weakest point.

As if that is not enough, the fact that PAS has laid too much hope on its spiritual leader Nik Aziz has also produced the undesirable effects. The party has failed to see whether voters have gone for PAS because of Nik Aziz, or Nik Aziz because of PAS.

One thing that should command some attention after this by-election is that the UMNO-PAS dialogue which has almost been nipped in the bud may be resuscitated anytime soon, and the faction led by party president Hadi Awang that cherishes a friendly dialogue with UMNO is likely to bring this issue to light once again.

To prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak who has just sailed past his first 100 days in office, the by-election outcome should serve as a major morale booster, showing that a series of people-friendly policies implemented by him since taking over the baton have slowly won public approval.

If YOU win, you are a winner. If you come second, you are Nothing. We'll take the win. BN/UMNO inspite of their organisation, money, dirty tricks and tactics still cannot beat the will of the people. Go Fcuk yourself BN.

Hello bootlicker, don't be too quick to form assumption, the night is still young!!! For all you know, the worst has yet to surface after Najib's 100 days, maybe then it would be a much suitable time for you to sing another song-- this time, it would be of sullen tune!!!

Somehow I don't think UMNO is pleased with the results.
RM30,000,000.00 and still can't win.

I reckon the split in PAS over unity talks contributed to this narrow win. Perhaps the pro unity PAS people were campaigning for UMNO with promises of development? It is up to PAS to do an investigation and if this is the case then it is inevitable that the pro unity group should break away from PAS. However, I think this narrow win is a blessing in disguise, for the Opposition Alliance. It is a wake up call that they must heed. Do not bicker via the media and, as a matter of priority, set up a central secretariat.

Even though i m a pro-opposition, but i give a thumb up for this result. Peoples show BN their vote cannot be taking for granted in 2008, but PAS just take us for granted during this by election.

This is just a small lesson for PAS, if PAS still practising "Arrogant" like BN, it is going to burn itself in the near future!

Unity Talks? You might not "Sleep Sweeter with UMNO. UMNO will send you to Hell next time!"

Morale booster??? What??!!What??!! What morale booster???

By election deliberately hold on a tuesday, vote buying, and even the promise of a new bridge get them no where!!! It's a win at any cost situation for UMNo here. Think again, will ya?

87 % turn up rate??? Must be joking to come up with this figure! The most reasonable figure for a high turn up would be 75% at the maximum. So 87% minus 75%, you have 12%, that's about 1400 numbers of votes disadvantage for PAS, minus at least 500 votes influence by $$$ and the bridge!! Total a handicap of nearly 2000 votes yet they loose. There's no hope for UMno, really!!

This is really a good win for PAS.

Moral booster?

Imagine in a soccer game between PR & BN where PR won by 6-1. The best thing the loser (BN) can do to console their supporter is by saying that their team nearly score during the last minutes. How pathetic.. Go on and continue to lie to yourself smilies/smiley.gif

Publicly I understand UMNO and BN will behave that way. But I will be surprised if they remain jubilant behind the scene. Take a look at the advantages they have over PAS;

1) Huge campaign fund
2) The number of cabinet ministers headed by Deputy Prime Ministers campaigning for BN candidate
3) Using all resources within their power such as Media, government servants
4) Taking advantage of in fighting within PAS
5) Taking advantage of in fighting within Pakatan
6) Taking advantage of PM liberalization announcement
7) Taking advantage to announce teaching mathematics and science in Bahasa Malaysia to please the rural folks like Manik Urai

In spite of that they loss. I expect BN and UMNO to worry behind the scene as this spell disaster to them in future. Imagine they have to fight a united PAS and PAKATAN in future. They will be trashed.

If BN and UMNO are jubilant behind the scene, I really feel sorry for them for getting it all wrong.
