By Zubaidah Abu Bakar (NST)

PAS' narrow win and severely-reduced majority in yesterday's by-election in Manik Urai signal one thing -- that it is losing its grip in a state it has been governing for the past 19 years.

That, and the fact that Umno has made significant inroads in Kelantan.

Sure, voters like Che Jalal Muda, who has been casting his vote in Sungai Peria in the past three elections, could not help Barisan Nasional candidate Tuan Aziz Tuan Mat win.

But his vote counted in drastically reducing the majority obtained by Pas -- the incumbent. Its candidate, Mohd Fauzi Abdullah, won by only 65 votes.

In the general election last year, the late Ismail Yaacob of Pas defeated BN's Zulkifli Omar with a 1,352 vote-majority.

In a democratic electoral system, a win is still a win, no matter how small the margin is.

Umno will have to live with that until the next election.

But, Pas cannot pretend that it is a victory that it can be proud of. Manik Urai was considered a Pas stronghold for more than two decades.

Pas can no longer thump its chest now that it has lost five of the nine polling stations.

It does seem like the frequent appearance of Pas spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, who has been menteri besar from 1990, in the constituency, appears to no longer have an overwhelming impact as before.

For Umno, it is a defeat. But by any measure, it is a moral victory.

It is a positive signal, given that the BN has lost all past by-elections in the peninsula since the coalition's dismal performance -- its worst -- in the 2008 general election.

One thing is certain: Umno must have done something right to be able to reduce the majority in the Pas fortress.

The BN surpassed Pas in youth votes by 61 votes. Still, it is not a clear sign that young Malays are returning to Umno's fold.

Umno's hard work has clearly paid off.

Credit has to be given to Kelantan Umno chief Datuk Mustapa Mohamed who traversed several hundreds of kilometres of the small constituency after the seat fell vacant following Ismail's death.

The decision by the Umno headquarters to have a central command centre, where activities were monitored, could have greatly contributed to Umno's performance.

Another factor is the exceptionally very high voter turnout -- 87.33 per cent, with a total of 10,736 of the 12,293 eligible voters casting their votes.

Pas has now to examine the outcome. Its leaders need to seek answers as the narrow win came as a complete surprise.

Pas was banking on its outstation voters but their contribution failed even to maintain last election's majority.

This, despite a hundred more of its supporters returning to vote compared with the 1,200 voters in 2008.

Dr Sivamurugan Pandian, of Universiti Sains Malaysia, thinks the young voters who returned to vote could be the factor that caused a reduction in support for Pas.

"They might want to see change and could also be fed up with the conflicts in Pas," he says.

The fact that Pas claimed it won by a 2,000 majority an hour before polling ended just showed how confident the party was.

"Its a combination of many factors; the major thing is that Nik Aziz is no longer the decisive factor in Kelantan," says Professor Mohammed Mustaffa Ishak of Universiti Utara Malaysia.

He feels that Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Mustapa and Umno information chief Ahmad Maslan deserve a pat on the back.

Professor James Chin, of Monash University Malaysia, says voters are annoyed with the infighting in Pas.

"Some wanted the bridge that they had been waiting since the 1980s," he remarked.

To say Umno's failure to wrest the seat from Pas is a rejection of Datuk Seri Najib Razak is flawed.

It's more a sign that people are beginning to warm up to the prime minister.

Umno's ability to regain support in a Pas stronghold may have probably found the prime minister his winning formula in future elections.

Its just a beginning of a much bigger battle -- to win the hearts and minds of the urban and more sophisticated voters.

Well done Zubaidah. Good spin and let the UMNOputras believe them. The truth is that this is 'SATU LAGI PROJEK BN YANG GAGAL". Infact you should tell the BN that if they help a snap election today, they will win with their hands down. Tell them PR is in a disarray. Team with Baradhan and write some fantastic spins for the UMNOputras.

haha...i think the MU voters were just taking advantage of situation. Apart from to maintain the winning streak of PR, i think the voters there just thought, hey, why don't we vote for BN this time, it's not like if BN win, kelantan will fall to BN nor there will be changes in the federal government. So why don't we vote for BN, coz there maybe a chance we could get a new bridge and some other development also. maybe lah

Hold on Zubaidah, it's too early to jump the gun as yet. Does the MU result includes Undi hantu, Undi Zombie(the dead voting), Undi Pos haram, the SPR own ballot and such?

The outcome of Manek Urai clearly paint a picture of 49.4% confused Manek Uraian, unable to resist the temptation of corruption offered by UMNO/BN the intimidation of voters, the obstruction of democracy by holding the ballot on Tuesday to deprive outstation voters their right to vote. What it really pictured perfectly is that 49.4% of average Malays, Melayu, Bumiputera are easily bought with bribery offers, the doctrine of BN/UMNO politics and rule.

Manek Urai did not signal the peoples acceptance of UMNO or BN, but it did gave a sign of how weak 49.4% Malays, Melayu, Bumiputera can be when it come to deal with the temptation of bribery.

Eh Zu! If Jibby is feeling the warmth rising from the ground, it means he's feeling safe enough to remove his bulletproof underwear. Glad you and he both believe the increasing temperature is indicative of the rakyat "warming up" to this cold-fish Umno career bureaucrat dubbed Naif Ton Rasa by Bernama. Perhaps I shouldn't spoil your day by pointing out that we've just lit his funeral pyre?

The plan is to start an outlet in Alor Setar selling halal siew yoke (roast pork made from circumcised pig)... smilies/grin.gif

One can only evaluate when d playing field is level 4 both parties. There r substantiated reports voters were paid generously under d pretext of 'allowance'.

BN has all d manpower & gov. facilities at it's disposal, so what's d problem of getting more votes from the innocent people of MU. Tell d powers that be to provide r allow likewise for PR (PAS), make it a fair & square contest and then, nice lady u r eligible to comment.
Have a productive day.

Zubiadah, since you are such an astute political observer and forecaster, why don't you convey this juicy piece information to Nijib the PM and advise him on this positive trend and urge him to hold a snap election immediately.Who knows you might just end up as his key political strategist cum adviser. But we the rakyat don't buy your bullshit.

Zubaidah,

I am not warm, in fact I am very "hot"! I am so very hot that in the next and future election, I will vote anybody other than the UMNO/BN candidate. . .! Even if there is a pokok pisang contesting against an UMNO candidate, I will vote for that pokok pisang!

Thanx Zubaidah. Keep 'em stupid just the way we like it. In 2008 BN was in so much hallucination they thought people were behind them. When they were actually put behind the people.

And Nik Aziz was never the sole factor of neither PAS or PR's consecutive victories. It was AMNO's stupidity.

UMNO lost despite of abuse of the Federal Government machinery in the MU elections. PAS would have a bigger majority if not for the cheating (by SPR as an example) and vote buying etc. UMNO, through its bootlicker Zubaidah, must really be desperate in saying that a lost is a win. Go figure this out. Bollocks, 5 losses out of 6 by elections is a clear message by the Rakyat. In Japan, Jibby would have committed hara kiri, but then again Jibby has no honor whatsoever.

Shalom

In Malaysia, the losing party is considered the winner and the winner is considered losing its grip on the electorates. What the heck is going on with the brain of Jubaidah ? If UMNO cannot win in a malay majoriy constituency, can someone tell me where can UMNO win in malaysia come the next general election ?

BN is doomed, najib and his mediocre cabinet has to study math and Science in BM in order to improve their English.

If the BN people are so confident that the people are warming up to the PM then they should bubar the Perak state assembly and have fresh elections. If BN wins then nobody can say anything about power grab.

Not very perceptive this Zubaidah person from NST. As the English saying goes : "One swallow does not make a summer." And I doubt if this result can be construed as the rakyat warming to Najib. That's gushing it a bit, Zubaidah. I would rather put it down to the rift in PAS. Having said that, PR had better put its flimsy house in order. I see PAS as the baggage in the Opposition alliance, and the leaders of DAP and PKR had better sit down and have a tete a tete with the leaders of PAS to sort things out once and for all. I'm sure there are those in PAS who were talking to UMNO who see this narrow win as their chance to take their party down a different route, a route towards BN.
