Last Wednesday’s Cabinet decision means that Malaysia will have the most crazy educational system, where students in Form 4 in 2012 will have to switch to Bahasa Malaysia for mathematics and science in the last two years of secondary education, after nine years of learning these two subjects in English – again to switch back to English for pre-university and tertiary education!

The Cabinet decision last Wednesday on PPSMI (Pengajaran dan Pembelajaran Sains dan Matematik – teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics in English) is as disastrous as the Cabinet decision in 2002 to rush headlong into implementing PPSMI from Std. One for all national, Chinese and Tamil primary schools without any preparation or research whatsoever.

Now, Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, in justifying the Cabinet’s latest decision on PPSMI has made the shocking revelation that before the PPSMI was launched six years ago, there had been neither discussion nor approval by the Cabinet nor discussion with the parents.

Several current Ministers were in the 2002 Mahathir Cabinet, including the present Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, DPM Muhyiddin himself, Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and Information, Communication and Culture Minister, Datuk Seri Rais Yatim, and they as well as the leaderships of Umno, MCA, Gerakan, MIC, SUPP and other Barisan Nasional component parties should all explain how they could permit such a far-reaching decision affecting the future generation of Malaysians to be taken in so haphazard and irresponsible a manner!

I agree that the Cabinet decision on PPSMI last Wednesday came as “a bombshell to many, especially those in the urban areas”.

Just before Najib’s Cabinet reshuffle on April 10, the then Education Minister Hishamuddin was expected to have proposed the reversion to mother tongue for mathematics and science only at primary level, while retaining PPSMI at the secondary level.

As many had said, the complete reversal of PPSMI at both primary and secondary levels “has come as a real surprise”, as it is sheer political expediency which makes no educational sense whatsoever.

For instance, last Wednesday’s Cabinet decision means that Malaysia will have the most crazy educational system, where students in Form 4 in 2012 will have to switch to Bahasa Malaysia for mathematics and science in the last two years of secondary education, after nine years of learning these two subjects in English – again to switch back to English for pre-university and tertiary education!

Ministers who want millions of Malaysian students to go through the crazy system of nine years of mathematics and science in English from Std. 1 to Form 3, followed by two years in Bahasa Malaysia in Forms 4 and 5, and switch back again to English for pre-university and tertiary education must have their heads examined as to whether they are fit to be in Cabinet in the first place!

This is why MCA and Gerakan Ministers like Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat and Tan Sri Dr. Koh Tsu Koon are trying to wriggle out of the crazy decision, by agreeing in the Chinese media that mathematics and science should continue to be taught in English in Forms 3 and 5 after 2012.

Unfortunately, this was not the decision taken by the Cabinet, of which both of them are part!

Why then did Ong and Koh agree to the Cabinet decision last Wednesday that mathematics and science should revert back to Bahasa Malaysia from English for Forms 4 and 5 from 2012, as clearly explained by the Education director-general Tan Sri Alimuddin Mohd Dom in post-Cabinet meetings and interviews?

When can Malaysian trust MCA, Gerakan, MIC, SUPP as well as Umno Ministers not to make foolish and crazy decisions sacrificing the interests of future generations of Malaysians?

The Cabinet on Wednesday should undo the various disasters of its decision on PPSMI last week, including:

· Endorsing the call of Parents Action Group for Education (Page) that schools should be given the option to teach science and mathematics in Bahasa Malaysia or English or in one’s mother tongue;

· Revert to the use of English as medium of instruction for mathematics and science in secondary schools;

· A flexible education approach that takes into account the urban-rural gap as well as the weaknesses of students, particularly in rural areas in proficiency in English, mathematics and science; and

· The important principle that advanced students should not be held back because of students who lagged behind academically.

After holding back the decision for so long, this is the mess they came out with! It's ridiculous! This shows the ruling UMNO goons can never think well for the long term good of the people! Half-hearted and sectarian-based decisions will never make them good national leaders! Move Over, UMNO, Damn It!!

Captain Spock of the USS Enterprise..somewhere on holiday in Malaysia:

"It is curious how often you humans manage to obtain that which you do not want."

What more can you expect from a crazy UMNO leadership effectively apple polished by the spineless likes of the MCA, MIC, Gerakan and PPP.....

Hopefully the electorate is not equally crazy....

The way this was done reveal a subconcious truth: The main benefit of doing this is To replenish Najib's political capital with the ultras within his party. Najib was using up his political capital what with getting rid of FIC, bumi-share qoutas, scholarships.

He was running through his political capital with ultras pretty quickly. This was a very convenient way to add back ultra- political capital or he might find himself in trouble later..

The decision to convert medium of instruction from English to Malay at such a rapid rate is neither a moronic move nor foolish as it made out by many.

It is a cold calculated and move to put more obstacles for Non-Malays in their progress as Razak did post 1969 riots. At a time when students from English schools were told to take only Bahasa Kebangsaan paper for Form V, and students from Malays schools were taking Bahasa Melayu paper, the government of the day made an overnight policy to require only credit in Form V Bahasa Melayu paper as the requirement for govt jobs. That resulted in almost 100% of the Non-Malays being excluded from applying for govt jobs. (Only much later a common Malay paper was introduced).

That sinister thinking is reflected in the current move to convert within two years to Malay aimed at making Non-Malay students fail their Maths and Science so that their progress can be retarded while Malays with Malay as their mother tongue can get a better edge. Father like son. But unfortunately, such short-sighted policies never work, but who in the ruling coalition cares if it helps to win rural votes on which the govt seem to depend on its survival.

I think its quite obvious that decision was made to garner support from the rural Malay folks as BN is definitely going to be wiped out come GE. You can spin it any which way, but the fact of the matter is, English is the way forward. So dont try to sell us any other story. The Malays will be at the loosing end at the end of this exercise. So if you want to remail as slaves to the BN govt, by all means pls go ahead and support this move and sign your childrens future to BN slavery.

This issue really get my blood boil up!

When Mahathir launched this program, it is with a good intention and I strongly believe his intention is for our enhancing our human capital. However, sadly, the implementation was poor. Still, it is good way to enhance our human capital in long run.

What the new cabinet under Najib should do is to put this project into a better implementation and improve this further. Instead, an U turn decision was made (again without proper consultation to parents). This show Najib lack of intention to better Malaysia but just want to remain in power to satisfying certain rural parties. This again show his cabinet ministers and advisers are as dumb as he is. They lost all the urban seats last election but still enjoy all the rural seats. Opposition is making inroad to rural side as rural ppls are becoming more informative about current issues. So rather than in gain back lost seats, they are just happily in maintain current seats.

UMNO always talk and scream on top of the lung until the mouth full of white foam on defending Malays and yet this action is of not advancing Malays in the today English speaking environment is really ironic!

BN governments should improve the PPSMI program by hiring more ENGLISH teachers abroad to help students here and at the same time, sending our teachers to US, UK or Australia to enhance their English skill.

This is not happening for sure as we have NO GUT ppls in our government.

DAP, start doing business. Build more internation schools.

Those parents whose children are affected by the moronic and irresponsible decision of the the sudden switch should sue the government. Their losses are real, long term and severe, so they should be fully compensated.

In this country, we have a bunch of brainless miniters and politicians as well as those BTN trained racist government administrators giving out doses of stupidity to the ordinary folks day in day out. A bunch of knidergarden teachers may be able to make more sensible decision than them.

This is crazy ...

Flipping into English, then flopping onto BM (Form 4 and 5), then flipping into English in tertiary education.

Insanity. This is what we call FLIP-FLOP EDUCATION POLICY.

I am sure many will suffer or fail in Form 4 and 5 Science and Maths, this way.

Goodbye Malaysian National Schools . No more future left.
