(Bernama) - Thousands of cars using natural gas may just be “bombs-on-wheels” on the roads.

The warning comes from the Water and Energy Consumers Association of Malaysia (Wecam) whose research found that many motorists subscribed to this “penny wise, pound foolish” mentality by having their gas tanks installed by backyard workshops and unqualified mechanics.

Wecam secretary-general S. Piarapakaran said these motorists compromised on safety and settled for cheap materials and shoddy workmanship.

“They were found to have patronised backyard workshops and unauthorised mechanics for the installation of gas tanks in their vehicles.

“Since the gas is highly inflammable, poorly fixed gas tanks with leaking rubber hose could easily explode during a collision,” he said.

He said there was no competent body in the country to monitor natural gas vehicles (NGVs).

“Imagine the damage to the environment and loss of lives if the vehicles are plying busy highways,” he said yesterday.

Piarapakaran suggested that the police and Road Transport Depart- ment should get assistance from Sirim and other organisations to keep tabs on NGVs.

The association also said that there would be regular checks and enforcement of safety features in NGVs, use of genuine parts and reduction in the cost of installing tanks by authorised dealers.

Car manufacturer should take the lead and responsibility to offer NGV option to all the cars they sell.

The manufacturer should know the specification and be able to install it with all the safety requirements.

Its the social responsibility of the manufacturer.

And for car owners please be safety consious. If you install at back yard workshop not only are you putting your life and family in danger; you are also putting other road user in danger

Please ban ngv on cars, if possible, because Malaysian weather is too hot plus if the driver is a smoker, it will explode anytime and pose a risk to the car or person beside it.If ban is not possible, then ensure the car is 100% safe.

..Dare not use natural gas ...(may just be “bombs-on-wheels”) ..

Use water(H2O) to run your car is safer and even cheaper instead.
I used it for a year now & it is environmentally friendly.
My petrol bill reduced by half.

Just curious. Does periakarappan represent any special interests businesses ?

NGV leak will not cause an explosion even in an accident if the tank's integrity is not compromised. The leaking gas can however create more burning or explosive mixture if it gets trapped with oxygen. This is no different from petrol fumes.

The key safety MUST BE FROM THE TANK.

NGV is a combustible substance. It will explode when contacted with a spark.I never heard NGV dont burn when on fire.

A friend of mine installed a NGV tank inside her Naza MPV.Even with qualified installer it did not minimised the danger ahead. The tubes will worn out with time.It just need one small spark to turn it into bomb..

Well..BN imcompentent govt will not do anything until mass death happened
