(The Straits Times) - AN ONLINE poll on former Malaysian premier Mahathir Mohamad's blog showed 75 per cent of votes favouring the teaching of Maths and Science in English.

In his latest entry on www.chedet.com, Dr Mahathir posed the question to readers, 8,044 of whom disagreed with the government's decision to revert the teaching of both subjects to Bahasa Malaysia.

As of Thursday night, only 2,719 votes came from those who agreed with the decision, according to The Straits Times . In his entry, Dr Mahathir said the he felt the government was not listening to the voice of the people.

Malaysia announced on Wednesday it will abandon the use of English to teach math and science, bowing to protesters who demanded more use of the national Malay language.

Malay will be reinstated in state-funded schools starting in 2012 because teaching in English caused academic results in those subjects to slip, Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said.

The news comes after months of high-profile demonstrations by politicians and linguists, especially from the ethnic Malay majority, who say a six-year-old policy of using English undermines their struggle to modernize their mother tongue.

English was once the medium of instruction in most schools in Malaysia, a former British colony. Nationalist leaders switched to

Malay less than two decades after independence in 1957. In 2003, realising that poor English skills hurt graduates competing for work against people from other countries, especially neighbouring Singapore, ex-Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad launched a program to resume teaching math and science in English. Most other subjects are taught in Malay.

Malay activists began to protest the policy after the government recently said it was reviewing the programme's success. Students in rural districts, who are mainly Malay, suffered the most because their English proficiency was low, Mr Muhyiddin said. He said authorities would try to improve students' English-language skills by recruiting more teachers and offering more language classes.

Some in the large ethnic Chinese and Indian minorities also oppose the use of English, insisting that math and science should be taught in their mother tongues, Mandarin and Tamil.

In an open poll like this, anyone on earth could be voting. The same person can also vote many times at differnt time and from different computers. So, this is not necessarily a Malaysian vote or even a reliable vote.

Nevertheless, why in the first place mess up with Education in English? Why not have four streams of education in English, Malay, Tamil and Mandarin? Let people choose what they wish to study? Is it not the most democractic way of doing things in a democratic country?

allo gomen...Cina Mandarin, Indian Tamil, Melayu Ultra minta Math and Science in own mother tongue. so bloody selfish and narrow minded of them. since all claims teaching of Math and Science is beneficial in own mother tongue, what should Punjabis and Eurasian kids do? learn Math and Science in their own mother tongues too? which school should they go to?

Tun,

When you switch the teaching of Math and science into English, did you provide enough qualify teacher?

using rural student doing badly is not an excuses, it is the lack of teacher (qualify) not the rural student. They are equally smart as the urban student. Just poor teacher.. lead to poor student.

Whose fault? Elementary la!

Changing back the teaching of Science and Maths from English to B Malaysia just because the results from the rural students have gone down is just plain stupid.
If the DPM says that the change is because B Malaysia is now the language of Science and Maths of most countries in the world, we will certainly support the change. But because the rural students results are poorer?? Smells, looks and sounds like it is done for political reasons and survival.

We can have the best english language Lab in the world, but after the learning language hour is over and these students revert to speaking BM at home and the kampungs, how can this strategy improved the rural students command of the language? Moreover, all other subjects are taught in BM. Think! How can they master english.
30 years ago the decision to used BM was a big mistake. That was after the socalled race riots instigated by UMNO. The malays caught the nationalistic fervour. Rahman Yaccub, the then education minister killed english schools. Now after March 8 election UMNO again the same party fear of loosing more support decided to kill english on the pretext the rural children can't catch up and Najib turned around and said we produced quality graduates all along, why then did TDM said otherwise when he made the decision to used English as the medium of instruction for maths and science. The statement coming from Najib is a joke because he was not a product of the malaysian education System but from the British Boarding school system.

Just revert back to the English Medium schools and Malay Medium schools of the 1960s' Education Policy? Let's draw out each student's potential & promote it positively !

Study in "English Medium Schools" for those who wish to ENGLISH. Study in "Malay Medium Schools" for those who wish to MALAY. We have a win - win situation. smilies/wink.gif
This is only the best political Solution .

by nationalising the english schools and killing the english medium had been the start of the downfall of the english language and in general the standard of education of Malaysia. We used to have Malay, English, Chinese and Tamil schools and they worked fine.....until some over zealous politician for personal reasons started the rot. I am so disappointed of the standard of english in the country in general not that i have a high standard..even daily usage and grammar is out.
Sigh... what are our polictitians doing to our future ....

Strange ain't it?

How does one reconcile a 75% vote agst a Najib policy with a 65% approval rating?

Something smells like ikan....

Merdeka Ctr - why don't you compliment your latest poll with an online version?

Mahathir,
Your poll is not fool proof. I logged in 10 times and voted 10 times.
Thousand others could have done the same.
The Malay educated did not read English.so they did not participate
Your previous policies are not right all the times....please accept that fact.

Maybe you need to go full retirement in the next world. After all ypou are already 84
