Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today completely ignored the concerns of his endorser Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and defended the government's call to scrap the teaching of maths and science in English (PPSMI).

This is perhaps a sign that Dr Mahathir's influence over Najib is slowly waning.

Najib today said discarding the PPSMI, a programme Dr Mahathir introduced when he was prime minister, was a sound decision in light of its failed objectives.

The prime minister reasoned that although the government will discontinue the programme, its objectives will remain.

"Its spirit and objectives remain the same, we are just changing the approach," he told a press conference at his office here.

He said the government has introduced other measures to improve the standard of English among the country's students through the employment of quality teachers.

Currently, out of the more than 30,000 English teachers nationwide, the prime minister said only eight per cent were confident enough to carry out the PPSMI.

I don't understand what Najib meant when he said only 8% of 30,000 English teachers were confident in teaching Maths and Science in English. Of course they would be! English teachers teach English. Those with grounding in Maths and Science teach Naths and Science. Now we know why the policy was a failure!

the education of her children is of the utmost importance in any successful country. please think, unfortunately, i believe that in malaysia, after 5 decades we are now stuck with a sick education system which is getting worse by the minute. Please think of the children s futures.
Malay, English? i guess it really doesn't matter, good caliber teachers who teach with passion and inspire the children is what we need, as well as an honest minister or two. smilies/grin.gif

Why does Najib have to follow Mahathir or worry about what Mahathir thinks?

The solution is there...If the children of most of the UMNO top politicians were to become teachers and teach maths and science in english, we would have solved the problem. If I am not worng, they are mostly educated in english overseas and can speak the english well.
