(The Star) ALOR SETAR: The Pendang district office has rejected the Kedah Pig Traders and Butchers Association’s application to build a slaughterhouse in Kampung Cina here following protests from nearby villagers.

District officer Abdul Shukor Abdul Ghani said villagers, including those from the Siamese community, had complained about the move.

He also said the land owner had refused to allow the association to build the slaughterhouse there.

“I have written to Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak’s office informing him of the decision.

“However, the final decision lies with the Mentri Besar and if he still wants the slaughterhouse to be built in Pendang, we will help with the process,” he told a press conference yesterday.

Abdul Shukor said this after receiving a memorandum from Pendang 4B Youth Movement, representing the villagers who are against the planned move.

It was reported that the association had found a privately-owned land in Pendang as a new location for the project. This is to replace the illegal slaughterhouse at Kampung Berjaya, Jalan Putra, which was demolished recently.

The demolition had led to the Kedah DAP pulling out from the Pakatan Rakyat coalition, among other issues.

Azizan had reportedly ordered the Pendang district office to assist the association in its plan to build a slaughterhouse in the district.

Pendang 4B Youth Movement chairman Nor Azam Ismail said that the group protested because the new site was located close to Malay residential and agricultural areas.

He said that the proposed site was also near the irrigation system used by farmers and the villagers.

If one cannot slaughter the pig, how can one get pork to eat ?. If one slaughter in an unapproved area, it is called "illegal abattoir" so it should be the duty of the govt to help set up a proper place for a legal abattoir for non halal meat.

If the govt can have legal abattoir for the lembus then it should have one for non halal meat.

Since "one man's meat is another man's poison" so to speak, then the other party should not be denied the right to eat the meat that they want.

Oh... I see... Azizan was the one who ordered Pendang district office to assist while Nor Azam of 4B(4 Bastards??) Youth was the one protesting. Yet, it is Azizan that is being blamed by DAP?!! Why ar??? I think I smell pig shit all over...

Here cannot, there cannot!

Place the pig abattoirs next to the govt abattoirs. This way all animals live together and die together in the same place.

Haiya, just clear some portion of the jungle and set up a large abbatoir for the state. It is not about pigs more important than human. It is about protein supply, and surely we do not want to experience hikes in chicken, mutton, and beef prices. Also, it is not easy to increase fish production which is dependent on weather and sea conditions.

By the way, pork consumption may be "haram", not its rearing.

This is not unexpected.
No one wants an abattoir next to his house/field etc even if he loves roasted pork.

However, Kedah is a moderately large state.
Surely there is a piece land within 10km or 15km of Alor Setar suitable for an abattoir.
YAB MB needs to try harder.
