The definition of racism according to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary is "a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities, and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race."

By O. YOUNG/MySinchew

A COLUMNIST of a Malay-medium newspaper was accusing prime Chinese-medium newspapers of racism in a recent article. Sin Chew Daily was singled out in particular.

The article criticised Chinese news journalists of having deviated from the national mainstream thinking to instigate the narrow-minded view of racism. Granted, I agree that Chinese newspapers do support Chinese-medium education. But can this be seen as racism?

The definition of racism according to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary is "a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities, and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race."

Australia's popular Macquarie Dictionary Online further defines racism as the belief "that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule or dominate others."

The UN does not define "racism," however it does define "racial discrimination." According to the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD), "the term 'racial discrimination' shall mean any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on race, colour, descent, or national or ethnic origin which has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal footing, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural or any other field of public life."

So, judging by the way racism is officially defined, to what extent are the Chinese press journalists, particularly those of Sin Chew Daily, guilty of instigating racism? Who among the top leadership of Sin Chew are holding the belief that the Chinese race is the most superior and must therefore rule the other racial groups? Who among the writers of Sin Chew think that Chinese is more important than other languages, even to the extent that it should replace Bahasa Melayu as the official language for the country?

According to Utusan's ghost writer Awang Selamat, if an independent probe were to be carried out, the Chinese newspapers would be found to be the real racist. I am not interested in finding out who the real racist is. What I am more interested in is the question of whether or not the Chinese newspapers in Malaysia are spreading racist sentiments.

Why would the promotion of Chinese-medium education be considered racist when there has been no attempt to negate the official language of the nation? Is this because Awang Selamat has his own definition of racism, or is it because he does not understand the position and principles of the Chinese newspapers towards Chinese education in the first place?

With all due respect to the objector and before proving his thesis wrong, I can't help being curious as to how he actually defines racism. Granted that if he believes in the superiority of the Malay race over all other racial groups, that they have the absolute right to rule others who are inferior, that all who challenge that belief and who believe in human rights for all or who struggle for social equality are racists, then by this "special" definition, I'm afraid he is right. After all, the Chinese newspapers in Malaysia do indeed believe in human rights and social equality for all people.

This is so reminiscent of the days of pre-Emancipation America when the mainstream white society did not view slavery and the ban on black people's right to vote, participate in government or intermarry as an infringement of human rights. It happened because slaves were counted as only three-fifths instead of 100% of as a human being. For this very reason, their policy against blacks did not infringe on "human rights" as slaves were not considered "fully" human.

Naturally the infringement of human rights for African-Americans was never an issue to be debated. Then came the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who struggled for the equality of civil rights by organising protest marches and peaceful demonstrations, only to be accused of breaking the social order, going against the Bible and betraying Christian doctrine.

Are the Chinese newspapers in Malaysia spreading racist sentiments? If Awang Selamat would sit down and talk rationally with a view to seeking a common understanding, we might very well carry on this discussion.

It is good. Utusan and UMNO leaders are always give sedious statements so it is now the Non Malays time. If Najib is fair charge the Utusan or suspend its permit than take action on the Non Malays papers. However Najib is going to be fair, we see how fair is he.

If there's a competition to compete for the most racist newspaper in Malaysia, Utasan would wing hands down and Awang Hate-ah-mat would win the "Racist Writer of the Year" award.

Try looking at one of the most developed country in world; namely Switzerland. They have German speaking, French speaking and Italian speaking, but all of them CALL themselves SUISSE, not along racial line.

The biggest problem about Malaysian politics is that it that everything inevitably turn into race and religiuos issues. The other problem is there is no clear understanding what is race, culture and nationality. Race is a genetic expression. In other words a Chinese Han will always look different from an Indian or Malay, and vice versa. So no one is forcing, like one reader claims, to learn Chinese and live like a Chinese to be accepted as one. If you do you will be just a Malay or Indian that speaks Chinese and eat Chinese food, and still not genetically a Chinese. However, one can have a common citizenship and be an equal and same citizen in a country. So learning Chinese and encouraging the learning of Chinese is not being racist. If it is you can call the Prime Minister of Australia as a Chinese chauvinist because he had started to encourage Australians to learn Chinese. It is just like English or German or a foreign language tool - for trade, communications ,exchange of technology etc. Please dont make study of any languages other than Malay as disloyalty or racism, otherwise the Malays will be left behind in an ever increasing globlized world. And if they do, dont blame racism, blame the BN playing the racial issues and or their own closed minds.

Awang Selamat, a ghost writer, could be a handle use by anyone. His or her purpose is to agitate and not rationally debate. For umno to hold on to power they have to create a sense of discontent amongst their supporters and umno will ride in on their high horse as the saviour. This is subtle and basic provocation and mind pollution. The readers of awang selamat will not read sinchew and this is why all the argumentation and rational discourse will not reach the people whose mind had been poisoned.

So is hisham going to issue a warning to this ghost for "hasutan" ?

To define Chinese is like to define Malay, there will be no end. A simple way is that we don’t stress on bloodline or genetic, but rather on culture commonality.

I doubt if Chinese really care if you are Chinese or not. The usual argument is Chinese less individualism, we focus more on family (jia = family?). The truth is Chinese appreciate freedom, historically I think we have more freedom than what one use to believe in term of government control. Chinese newspapers wish to preserve this freedom, unlike the rest who want to impose their values on others.

Propaganda of racism, NO. Propaganda of some bloodsuckers, YES.

A bit of inside info for some readers - AWANG SELAMAT - the ghost writer/anonymous editorial pen-name in Utusan, is not always written by the editors of Utusan. I was informed that most of the articles were written by different factions of UMNO and warlords (since Utusan is the OFFICIAL UMNO newsletter) and "edited" only the different editors in order to polish up their broken Bahasa and "hide" the politician. Hence, it is a direct grassroot sentiment (albeit racial most of the time) of UMNO to its members - so don't expect that any action to be taken against Awang Selamat - since the person who wrote the article may also a very powerful warlord. DOn't be conned into believeing that some editors/writers in Utusan brave enough to stick their necks and balls out for the chop - that is not the case - it is the UMNO warlords writing !!

"Are Chinese newspapers spreading racist sentiments?"

Perhaps, in self-defence of the community, but I am certain it has a long way to go when compared with Utusan, the well-known toilet paper, with the bloody likes of Awang Selamat!

Mean while utusan has been a over broad racialist for years playing up all of the dangerous tunes and still able to publish freely as it like ...and even its permit still not have revoked not even once...if for other paper means its gone forever...it will face suspension, detained under Press Act and so forth...

The chinese, malay, tamil and all the other media controled by umno/bn are racist, period. This is the way umno/bn has been running this country - divide and conquer!
So all you malaysians should not play into umno/bn's magic show or you would be no different a fool as those who did so in the yester-years.

Once upon a time there was this serious racist joker called all others racist because the views of others run against his racist disposition. To him,
anyone who seek to have the opportunity to learn more about their own language and culture without jeopardising others is racist,
anyone who doesn't believe in this joker's self proclaimed superiority is racist,
anyone who disagree with the continuation of discriminating policies in favour of this joker in this country is racist,
anyone who wants to fight for fairness and equality for all citizens in this country is considered racist by this jokers,
anyone who objects to deprivation on human rights and liberty is racist as far as this joker is concerned,
And this joker is willing to sing the malaysia-all asia to carry the balls of his boss...
