Will Anwar Ibrahim go to jail? PDF Print

After the revelation of the Lingam tape incident, the controversial court decisions in the ongoing cases over the Perak constitutional imbroglio, the trial of Raja Petra Kamarudin, and the activist criticism of the former judge NH Chan, the public’s confidence in the judicial process in the administration of justice has been tainted with bitter cynicism.

Malaysian Mirror

One of the most watched events on the Malaysian political stage is the unfolding drama of Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy trial that is now twisting and turning through the maze of Malaysian courts.

While the trial is going through its motion, we cannot comment on the merit or demerit of the case, so as not to influence the judges either way, on pains of committing the offence of contempt for the court. But the political fervour connected with this controversial court case deserves nothing less than considered analysis.

If Anwar is found guilty eventually, after all the channels for his appeal have been exhausted, he will certainly be jailed yet again. That may not be all bad for his political movement, for every cause needs a martyr to fuel and sustain the passion of the martyred leader’s followers. Nelson Mandela comes to mind immediately.

There are those who may have worried that PKR would be ineffectual without the commanding personal presence of Anwar Ibrahim, as was evidenced in the declining fortune of PKR after his jailing following the tumultuous events in 1998. The rising of PKR to the role of a major national player also coincided with his release from jail before the general election last year.

But the times have changed. Many other leaders of PKR have emerged, especially after the March 8 political tsunami last year. Besides, Anwar also had the foresight of recruiting Zaid Ibrahim, the former Umno law minister, and a hugely popular new hero of the PKR support base. Articulate and eloquent, Zaid could easily be groomed to be the heir apparent to Anwar, barring jealous opposition from other competitors in his party.

It will be determined by the 4th floor boys as to whether DSAI still constitutes to be a threat to Najib or not and whether DSAI can hold Pakatan together.

If the answer is yes to both questions, they will probably send him to jail as it has been proven that incarcerating DSAI will temporarily halt Pakatan's progress. But then again, it will make a martyr out of DSAI.

Stopping RPK will be their following target once they have decided to jail DSAI.

Once Anwar is convicted again on trumped charges, then Malaysia will become worse off than the pariah Zimbabwe and Myanmar regimes. Big time foreign investors will never trust Malaysia to make any serious big future investment. As it is, our courts have become the laughing stock of the entire developed world. Nobody understood how a Kangaroo court worked until Malaysia produced startling examples of it. Now Malaysia court judgements will soon be used as a learning tool by other countries legal systems as very clear cut examples of pitfalls to avoid.

This trump up charges to incarcerate DSAI will make a Mandela out of him and will only see the UMNO/BN power substained temporarily. Whatever measures they take to revise their popularity among Malaysian will come to nothing.

The youth of to-day are unlike the youth of yesteryear. They can't be dissuade from abandoning the struggle against authoritarian rule. The clock is already ticking towards the downfall of the UMNO/BN government. Any unwise, corrupt and questionable action especially high-handed, abusive & selective use of the ISA, the Sedition Act, Printing Press and Publication Act etc to control the basic fundamental freedom of expression of the people will only continue to accelerate the pace of the reformation movement. One must learn from history.

Unless the Pakatan is once again "pechah", which UMNO/BN is hoping to see, no amount of unwarranted action to stop the reformation movement is going to help UMNO/BN, whether it is formation of the malay unity committee, selective persecution by MACC, abuse of PDRM and bias judiciary,

So incarceration of DSAI is going to make things worst not better.

I personally do not hold out much hope for Anwar otherwise the charge would have been dropped by now, bearing in mind the leaked medical reports on Saiful. As such Anwar is not the only person on trial here; the judge, therefore the judiciary, is also on trial. smilies/angry.gif

If DSAI is jailed on this trumped up charge we can be rest assured that BN has signed their own DEATH WARRANT come the 13th GE.

After all that is done and seen in our judiciary, can we still trust our courts? No way Jose! Our court stinks as something is rotten in my Malaysia (not Denmark).

DSAI should go into exile and maybe he should read this here to get some inspiration http://selvarajasomiah.*******...in-prison/

I will just say it straight up, if Anwar actually goes to jail on trumped up charges for the second time in a decade it will be a grave travesty of justice, which will see not only BN losing the federal govt in GE 13 but opposition gaining 2/3rds majority....such will be the anger. No less than the Bar Council has asked for the charges to be dropped based on flimsy/nonexistent evidence.
That means Mr. attorney general, the Bar Council is infering you do not know your job.saiful will be the first victim to proudly blog about his experience, and the first victim to swear it was against his will then rtemain silent as consensual sodomy charges were read ot in court.
I say bullshit- they dont have any hard evidence, if they did it would have"accidentally and coveniently leaked out before the Permatanf Pauh by elections.
lastly I belive in malaysian mirror analysis as much as I would believe in other drivel published in the MSM.
I would not be surprised if above articloe is to measure , if some Pakatan supporters would abandon Anwar, for Zaid and start an internal rift.
Read between the lines and know who Malaysian Mirror is beholden to.
BN counts on Mail & Mirror to win hearts & minds http://www.themalaysianinsider...?task=view

if anwar found not guilty, it will be extremely embarrasing for BN, AG, Najib who tried to charge anwar on such thrumped up charges.

Happy Jailbird, Anwar. The inmates will welcome you back but this time, you will be well-protected by all the taikos against the IGP, DPP etc.. I can bet those UMNOs will make sure you are sodomised this time by the court.

Anwar I believe is being pursued by no other than the AG and the IGP, and perhaps also by UMNO and their ilk. They are all out to get Anwar--by hook or crook, and most likely by 'crook'. The AG and IGP are probably furious that they are both targetted by Anwar in his court actions for alleged fabrication of evidence in his Sodomy 1.0. Now with Soodomy v2.0, I'm quite sure that that the authorities will make the charge stick. Hey, who wants to lose power, come GE 13 in 4 yrs time? The Malays I am afraid have not come out of their political cocoon to be magnanimous to rivals. Their 'dendam kesumat' is legend. Read the Malay Annals of history--the palace intrigues, the deceits and betrayals among the powerful and rich of yester-years.

The Umno conspirators have bitten off more than they can chew this time. If they have any sense of survival, they would drop the charges this Wed. July 8 2009.

Yes, they can do a shameless kangaroo court like Augustine Paul and send Anwar to jail but at what political price? There'll be hell to pay. You cannot convict a person of sodomy when TWO MEDICAL REPORTS (Hospital Pusrawi and Hospital KL) have confirmed that there is no sodomy because Saiful's a$$ is still VIRGIN!

The reputation of the judiciary is already in tatters. After this it will be in the sewerage pit!

As for the BN government, they are only proving to everybody that they are morally unfit to govern.
