(NST) - Malaysia is the best place for tourists to visit at the moment as health authorities here are not taking the influenza A (H1N1) global outbreak lightly.

"It is because of the (stringent preventive) measures we initiated that today we are still in the containment stage and not mitigating, as some countries are doing," Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said.

Citing examples, he said Singapore had 701 confirmed cases, Philippines (861 with one death), Japan (1,212), Thailand (774), Hong Kong (726), United States (27,717 with 127 deaths), Mexico (8,279 with 116 deaths), Canada (7,775 with 21 deaths), Britain (4,250 with one death) and Australia (4,038 with seven deaths).

Liow chided Tourism Minister Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen for raising concern over tourism numbers due to the media coverage on the influenza A situation here.

He said tourists should be happier coming to Malaysia because of the stringent measures put in place.
Liow said Malaysia only had 196 cases with 166 imported infections and the rest local transmissions.

As all those detected with fever upon arrival were immediately isolated and contacts of those found positive were traced and placed under home quarantine, the disease was contained.

The minister said because of this, visitors to Malaysia could move around freely with no fear of being infected.

Liow, who was visibly upset over Ng's statement, later met with her and tourism industry representatives to explain why the Health Ministry had to implement stringent measures.

"Our aim is to protect our citizens and I must stress that the disease is highly contagious although it is mild to moderate in severity."

He said if firm measures were not put in place, many people would be hospitalised with the disease, which could also be fatal for those suffering from other illnesses and chronic lung diseases.

Influenza A/H1N1 is an imported virus.

Hongkong, Singapore and Japan also have stringent preventive measures. They have more cases because there have more foreign tourists from the affected countries (like USA and Canada) and more of their citizens going to these countries and getting infected when they return home.

Nothing to shout about.

Mr Liow Tiong Lai,
How good is MAlaysia & your health ministry in combating seasonal pandemic ?
I say you people there do nothing at all except for those loose screenings at the airports & all entry points !

Hong Kong maybe worst, but they raise wide awareness & contain the virus well. Their government & the public are working side by side. Frequent alert & advice announcements are made almost every 5mins in train stations.
1. Cover your mouth when you sneeze
2. Wash your hands often with disinfectant soap

You can get disinfectant alchohol everywhere in their shopping malls, hotel lobby, airports & public toilets. Their elevators & lifts are sterilize every 2hours. Even their lift's buttons are pasted with disinfectant transparent film. Toilets are clean every 2 hours. People wear mask everywhere. They do it seriously.

Do you see any effort being done here in Malaysia when we are already hit !? Did you do something rather than talk to the press ?

When I came back from HK, our (LCCT) Immigration Officer at the counter was watching a movie on his lap top instead of checking IDs or helping out the short staffed medical officers !

There's nothing to be proud of your under-achievements... Ng Yen Yen was right in raising her concerns.

Yen Yen,

You cannot twist and turn media coverage to suit your needs. If there is an outbreak in Malaysia, everyone should knoe about it. If there is an outbreak in a country you are about to visit, wouldn't you want to know about it? Don't blame the media.

Or is this just an excuse in the event that RM1 million you gave your friend's husband, Jean Todt, doesn't materialise to anything extra for Malaysia? Remember, his friends already come here for the Monsoon Cup, so that doesn't justify the RM1 million.

Over the years, many of my friends have visited Malaysia because of me. Do I get any money for that? Remember, we are all "tourist ambassadors". We do it because we truly feel this is a wonderful country to visit and so encourage our foreign friends to visit us here. If Todt loves this country, as he professes to be, why take the money? Is he using the money to build a booth at a tourism conference abroad to promote Malaysia? Or is he just doing what we all do, i.e. to talk to our friends and encourage them to visit Malaysia?

Other countries do not believe in sweeping the problem under the carpet and are being transparent about the problem. It is better to be honest and educate the public to be socially responsible. Others have been honest about the recession, and Malaysia - No, No. Others are being honest about H1N1, and Malaysia - No, No.

What simpletons we have for our country's ministers.

So Liow is claiming credit because compared to other countries the number of swine flu cases are lower. It's lower because he has done a good job.

There is a very simple reason why other countries have more cases and Malaysia has less.

This is because we have less international travellers coming to Malaysia, especially from the source of the flu which is latin America.

What is there to be proud of with most international travellers not wanting to come to Malaysia even without the swine flu? They all prefer to go to Thailand, Hong Kong and Singapore for their holidays.

But like typical BN/UMNO, they have to turn this into a credit grabbing issue.

What about dengue, TB, etc which are on the outbreak in Malaysia which you never could contain?

Visitors and citizens can get bitten by mosquitoes

Does Ng Yen Yen belief that it is OK if everyone in Malaysia gets babi flu, but we cannot talk about it? Better to collect tourist money so we can pay for funerals.

Ha ha ha... Singapore 701, Thailand 774... Malaysia ??? Since when has the H1N1 virus recognised international boundaries

Malaysia's stringent preventative measures follow the usual Malaysian (IDGF) Standards. eg, you can walk onto any plane in Malaysia carrying any amount of liquids in your hand luggage. Try to do that in any other country in the world

If you are in the Ministry of Health for some duration...you tend to believe your own bullshit. And so it is with Liow….

Liow….Singapore has more then 700 cases and we have less then half of that?????...

With all our illegal immigrants, boat people pouring in from the Philippines, Indonesia and Bangladeshis and Burmese using the Malaysian Thai border as if it is their own backyard????

Liow is beginning to look like a bigger idiot then Chua Soi Lek. The Ministry boys (especially his snake DG) are conning him right under his nose and he doesn’t know it.

Malaysia has only 300 cases because of gross underreporting mainly because of its grossly inefficient public healthcare system.

Wake up Liow....Dengue alone is infecting thousands and has already killed hundreds these last few years. That alone is proof enough that the Ministry’s heath staff are sleeping on the job…..our public healthcare infrastructure is hopeless and inefficient .

Your Ministry stinks and it kills....so don’t go believing your own bullshit. Maybe you can afford to because you buggers will just run to Singapore or the US for treatment leaving the rest of us to face the mess here.

Liow should engage medical advisers or get a DG from the private sector. The only reason why we are in this healthcare mess is because every Health Minister including this one ended up believing their own staff leaving the country now fighting malaria, leptospirosis, cholera, typhoid, and God knows what else….…..

I thought the number in Malaysia is low is because a lot of cases are not officialy reported or the doctors are too dumb to know it is H1N1 or just too lazy to report it. Take your pick. It is like there is not much corruption in Malaysia because we have an efficient ACA. Anyway tourist can still come because the Malaysian government never really cares for their welfare nor their own citizen for that matter.
