A 45-minute documentary on Lee Kuan Yew, the founding father of modern Singapore and one of the world's remaining political strongmen. The film was seized by government officials (on orders of the home ministry) when it premiered at a private screening on 17 May 2008. Directed by Seelan Palay.

Yesterday I viewed this well-researched and passionately produced doco on Singapore's Mr Hyde side, and figured it was high time Malaysians took a good hard look at the unwholesome aspects of Singapore's toy-townish tinsel and glitter image - especially those who express envy when comparing per capita incomes.

While Lee Kuan Yew's 31-year iron-fisted authoritarian rule - which, in truth, never ended since he created an advisory post for himself as "Minister Mentor" to the government - facilitated a prosperous, efficiently managed city-state whose dynamic economic growth far outshines all its Asean counterparts, Singapore's impressive status as a developed nation has been attained at an extremely high cost to other far more important human values.

Values like the ability of its citizens to think and feel and act freely and independently - rather than behaving like well-disciplined ants in a high-rise, multi-tiered, 24/7-monitored colony. Indeed, anyone who has seen The Matrix will easily identify with the predicament of the protagonist Neo after he swallows the Red Pill and begins to see beyond the glossy façade of life in the gigantic discount emporium that represents Singapore's public image.

Seelan Palay exposes the cold-blooded, ruthless cruelty with which Lee Kuan Yew systematically destroyed his challengers, detractors and rivals in order to establish the Lee Dynasty, propped up by an obsequious bureaucracy of well-paid mandarins - while keeping the lower echelons of society eternally chained to a relentless and soulless economic juggernaut.

No matter what, Indians never get clobbered to deah under police custody in singapore.
They are merely sued for libel, made bankrupt and had to pay damages in the millions and had to work to death to pay for it.

I'm no admirer of Singaporean politics, but you can hardly say that what Singaporeans have lost is any worse than that Malaysians have lost

... and at least the Singaporeans have some compensations

Hahaha ... that is a good one. Ask any Singaporean about LKY and of course there will be complaints. Ask them about becoming Malaysians, the answer is definitely they will stick to LKY.

Many Singaporeans purchase properties in JB for two reasons. One is the close proximity to home, and the other the cost of living. It is not because of political reasons.

Miwaki,

Tell that to thousands of Singaporean retirees who have decided to settle down in Johor.

shamadz72, our able bodied youngsters are being poached to work there and Singaporeans are dumping their senior citizens over in Johor State.

Is LKY crueller and more cold-blooded than Dr. M or Suharto? It may very well be. BUT LKY was also many many times more precise. He hurt less people and he did more for more people than Dr. M or Suharto and given that they both had much larger population to work with, it says what on balance is LKY's achievement and harm stacked against others.

Nothing new for me.

Last time, politicians work for the country. Now politicians work for the money.

What would happen when he die? This is more interesting.

Much of what was said is not new. The principles enunciated in the video continue to be valid and relevant. Many of the events and personalities that had been affected one way or another by KuanYew were only given very scant mention. Much of the details could of course be found elsewhere.

The joke by a foreign tourist was amusing and couldn't pass without been mentioned. The tourist observed that singaporeans worshipped the goddess of mercy kuanyin and lived on an island governed by a god of no mercy kuanyew.

LKY had ran and built up singapore very much like a bonsai master. I always find bonsai a very strange hobby. But people had found it to be relaxing while others found it beautiful, very much like singapore island and yet others found it to be a lucrative venture.

A bonsai master basically pull, tug, tie and cut the plant to create an impression of beauty. To prevent the tree from growing too large the bonsai master would lift up the roots and snipped off any roots that had grown beyond what was deemed acceptable.

This was how singapore was shaped and formed. Whatever budding root, no matter how innocuous or benefitial to the island would be snipped off. But LKY is even more advanced than the bonsai master in that he laid poisons all over areas that he would not allow the roots to grow(out of bound markers). Any root venturing beyond certain point would have poison smeared all over the root. Everything around the root will also be poisoned to prevent the root from growing up.

To some when they looked at the bonzai would proclaim it is beautiful. In fact many would say the same. Accolades may even be won. If we look just a bit beyond the facade one would start to notice that something is terribly wrong. The plant is old and its years of struggle can be seen on the branches. There is sadness all bounded up in a tiny package.

If the tree had been allowed to prosper and grow to its glorious potential it would have dance with the wind, sang with the birds and touch the heavens. Alas this is not to be for the bonsai master proudly declared "I have created and all is well."

Bonsai is pleasing to alot of people mostly because it has great psychological satisfaction of manipulation and control. This is why I always find it a very strange and disturbing past-time.
