Scholarships: Najib copies & plagarises Pakatan (but what is this ‘new category only’ really?) PDF Print

Tsk, tsk - Najib isn’t able to come up with a single original idea of his own. Desperate to reclaim even an inch of the miles of non-Malay ground that he has lost, he resorts to adopting Pakatan policies.

By Nat Tan

Don’t take my word for it, check out PKR’s 2008 Manifesto, especially the section on education. Some quotes:

Furthermore, scholarships for overseas studies must be increased and guaranteed for students who attain a certain standard of achievement in their examinations. This will allow Malaysia’s best and brightest to reach their maximum potential and pave the way for them to bring back cutting edge skills and experience back into the country.

and

KeADILan’s vision for better education will:

1. Ensure universal access to high quality education by making school from kindergarten to university is completely free of charge for all Malaysians.

2. Guarantee government scholarships for students with a minimum of 4 A’s in their STPM and who are admitted into top international universities. Special attention will be given to poor families and students from rural areas.

Copycat.

Worse yet, he isn’t *really* making scholarships merit based, as the spin doctors would have you believe. Observe carefully:

A new category of Public Service Department (PSD) scholarships will be introduced next year based purely on merit, regardless of race.

New category?! What the heck is that?

So, the government will award merit-based scholarships to….. five people? I like how there is absolutely no elaboration on this vague ‘new category.’

The likely truth of the matter - and how Najib is gonna sell this quietly to his dwindling Umno faithful - is that the main body of scholarships will be given out in exactly the same manner as all things NEP: on the basis of race, and to selected cronies at the expense of the poor.

I wouldn't complain if our PM takes all the policies of Pakatan and implements them. They are good policies and there is no wrong in copying ideas and policies that work for the greater good of Malaysians and mankind.

So if Barisan were to truly adopt a Malaysia for all, I would vote for Barisan too!
I vote for the party who thinks of bettering my life as a Malaysian. If MCA wisen up and adopts everything DAP wants to do for Malaysia, I would vote for MCA, anytime. Or Gerakan. Or UMNO.

Why would pakatan offer scholarships to rural and poor folks when they state that free education can be accessed from kindergarten to University. the most these poor folks have to do is work part time to pay for food and lodgings, No? And why offer overseas scholarship? We can easily recall thousands of neglected Malaysians/ex-malaysian (including those singaporeans who were Malaysian in 1965) who work as lecturers and doing research/proffesionals overseas to work in this country by offering them decent benefits and perks as lecturers/scholars. These thousands can train millions and may invigorate a healthy r & d programme in this country, instead of focusing on tongkat ali alone.

I echo what yellowwoman has mentioned above. What do you mean by 'plagiarising' a policy? Do you mean only Pakatan has copyright over any policy? Come on, even if Najib's intention is not original and he copies other policies that is so-called belongs to KeAdilan, DAP or PAS or even Democrats of US or the Tories of UK, as long as the policy represents fairness and equality, then it is good.

Why do you have to have to be cynical about it? Are you actually afraid of losing voters to Barisan Nasional? I thought PKR would be happy if the Rakyat gets better of with good policy, not trying to be sour grapes when their opponents do the right thing.

Come on PM, we want to see the govt to protect the poor regardless of race.If we base on merit entirely, then the real issue is not address.I believe we will still have the same problem the poor still becomes poorer.MR PM, you don't get the whole issue here. what we want is to upgrade the life of the poor income families. Those students who come from wealthy famiies, they are not suppose to receive scholarship.Let their family sponsor them. The problem right now is some students who got scholarship because they have the connection with certain "people". This is no fair.As a tax payer, i want to see my money been spent in a good manner and objectively. NOT TO GET THE SUPPORT FROM CERTAIN COMUNITIES. If you could not address this issue, you better leave it to someone who can.By the way, please address the altantunya issue tranparently. Many of us still feel that there two sets of rules here in malaysia.one for the rakyat and the other one for certain people who have connections. You tell is it fair?
