THOMAS LEE

I believe it is time the Rakatan Rakyat Selangor state government do something about the 'sulit culture'. The coalition government is supposed to be a transparent, accountable and responsible administration but after a year nothing much seems to have changed.

Even one councillor has allegedly threatened to ask a local council to use the OSA on those who reveal official documents concerning the people's well-being.

Meanwhile, when questionable deals are exposed, the state executive councillor responsible for local councils, Ronnie Liu, cannot be reached for comments. There is a deafening silence.

If the Pakatan Rakyat state government continues the 'sulit culture' of the previous Barisan Nasional state administration and fails to be transparent, accountable and responsible, then many of its supporters will be put off and the next general election will not be smooth going for the Pakatan Rakyat.

Many of the blunders that reflect badly on the Pakatan Rakyat can be attributed to the appointed councillors showing off, abusing their position and power, threatening the people with OSA charges, and talking nonsense. Some are plain publicity crazy, while a few have been tainted by allegation of corruption. Such people should not be reappointed.

In view of the fact that direct election to the local authorities is not legally possible now, the Pakatan Rakyat should consider a sort of indirect election, in which those selected as councillors are nominees of the community, i.e. officials of residents associations, representatives of traders and hawkers, and those recommended by the professional bodies.

To safeguard the interest of the people and to avoid conflicts of interests, businessmen, especially those who have dealing with the local authorities like contactors and suppliers of materials, should be barred from being appointed councillors. As it is, there has be a case in which one businessman councillor has been alleged to have used his position to promote his own business. Whether the claim is true or not, the fact is that he has been tainted and he has lose much respect among the people. Even his own fellow party members have doubts about him. To avoid such a situation, the Pakatan Rakyat should not appoint business people as councillors.

Finally, as a demonstration of its sincerity in upholding transparency and accountablity, the Pakatan Rakyat should make all local councillors declare their assets on taking office and on completing their term. Such a move will ensure that only people of credibility and integrity are made councillors. As it is, the people don't seem to think much of councillors now, and look upon them as being on the take, although it may not be true. Declaring assets will enhance the status of the councillors and bring about some respect to them.

The honeymoon is over, Ronnie, and you need to do something concrete and fast to protect the good name of the Pakatan Rakyat. I need to write this because I am a true friend of your.

A nice piece Thomas.pardon my ignorance, very nice to be able to expose PR shortcoming. How about UMNOed BN short coming or is it UMNO BN has treated you very well for the last 52 years.Did you ever raise Toyol short coming, when he was the MB and UMNO was in power?

Funny how some people tend to forget or it is you are from MCA or Gerekan or PPP.

BTW, PR is not a party of angel, but according to DPM, any body critising UMNO need to seek forgiveness from God.

An excellent suggestion Thomas Lee, but those that you mention too can be partisan and forward their own agenda, but I concede that it is a far better option that politically appointed councillors.
Also councillors who abuse their position should be named, shamed and the rakyat should pressure for action to be taken.
We should analyze and expose the reason the Federal Government refuses to bring back local council elections, beyond saying its not suitable BN has not explained their stance.
Thomas Lee, I understand if you cannot name those persons who committed those transgressions you mentioned here, but if you have not already done so, please give YB Tony and MB Khalid the complete info.

If incompetence and corruption didnt exist then there would be no need for secrecy

In fact Councillors would be proud to advertise how efficient and effective was their management of the people's resources

Makes you wonder

Whatever the shortcomings, I think the selangor people's confidence in the new state government has not diminish. Only after 4 years will they decide if it is worth voting PR again. Now it is too early to judge.

PR State Government should never appoint PR office holders as councillors. They have no time to serve the people. Most of the time they are either indulge with politics or attending Seminars or party meetings. The people cannot get them on the phone at all. True as it is they have attended some problems but there is very lack of follow up with local councils. The councillors should be make up of respectable community leaders . YB Ronnie please take note of a very potential explosive problems yet to come.

thus far PR govt is doing well, the only issue seems to be Ronnie Liu and the local council. Ronnie is at times issuing statements and at times he is totally silent. Ronnie I think has tasted what powers can do and why I say that is cos he is inviting redha to sit on committees, turning up at massage parlour raid and saying Subang Ria Park can be developed. he did clarify the next day about Subang Ria park but still says the Sime has a right to develop and only a small portion. How small is small and fitness and spa was used as example.

So PR, look at Ronnie and give him some advise. and yes be different than BN. No sulit issue please.

@Ronnie Liu

If you choose to keep on silent, then resign.

I know the BN people are scheming something bad on Selangor right now... Uncle Khalid, I hope you know what you are doing...

Many Pakatan supporters ask for more time for Pakatan state governments to perform. One year is still too short for any results to be seen, they say. There is also the common refrain that Pakatan can't undo in a short time what BN has done for 50 years. This may be true for many areas but not in ALL areas. Like it or not, Pakatan leaders have to perform from day 1 and not after 2 or 3 years. Time is not a luxury that Pakatan has.

In the first place, Pakatan never had the luxury of a honeymoon once they took over. They fumbled in places where they were inexperience but no one can fault them for lack of trying to change things for the better. Furthermore, their hands were tied, and even a fool would know that there is little they can do where the administration and machinery were siding the federal government and in some cases sabotaging policies implementation. To pick on their "weaknesses" under such circumstances would be naive at best and is certainly very unhelpful in getting them to be effective.

Let's not get emotional over this issue. Whether it is Pakatan or BN/UMNO, it does not matter at all.

The bottom line is that if any one of them does not perform to the rakyat's expectation of a clean and transparent government, then they have to be kicked out.

Simple as that.

But comparatively, I believe that Pakatan is doing a relatively better job than what we had with UMNO/BN who are proven to be corrupt and liars beyond all doubts. Put it this way: even if Pakatan is not perfect as they are now, would you trade Pakatan for UMNO/BN to take over?

For me the choice is clear: Any alternative is better than UMNO/BN !

When Obama was asked by a ****** staff how he responds to partisan politicians who votes against any legislation even though it was good for the people, he gave an example of the Clinton medicare bill which was defeated by pro-healthcare corporations lobbyists. This was possible because it was a closed door meeting. He further suggested that the only way to overcome resistance to accountability and transparency is to go public. Open the meeting doors and invite the ngos and public into the meeting so that they can hear and see who is for and who is against the proposals. Let the public judge the politicians for what they stand for. Personally, I am disgusted with the way local councilors have called the shots and in a previous article by RPK, they seem to have gone under the radar and lost the CAT, damn fishy!
