(The Star) KUALA LUMPUR: The Government is looking into a proposal to reduce the detention period under the Internal Security Act from 60 to 28 days, said Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.

The Home Minister said this was among suggestions made to review the controversial Act, which is up for review in the next Parliament meeting.

Citing Britain as an example, Hishammuddin said the detention period under a similar Act there had been reduced to 28 days.

Speaking to reporters at the Parliament lobby yesterday, he said components of the review, which included proposals and suggestions from interest groups and members of the public, were being compiled now.

Hishammuddin said this suggestion came from the public and not the Government.

“A lot of reviews of the laws that will be amended had originated from the public. The Government is seriously listening to what the public wants us to do.”

Several other Acts under the purview of the ministry would also be tabled in the next Parliament meeting.

Another suggestion was a re-look at the Restricted Residence Act and Crime Prevention Act.

He said the vast improvement in the country’s infrastructure like roads, highways and public transportation and communication technology made legislation on the order to restrict the movement of a person outdated.

Reform means reduce ISA detention to "ZERO" days, i.e. totally abolish it, understand Kerisham. ISA has been abused for locking up journalist who reported the truth BUT spared and made samseng like you now in charge of ISA, isn't this absurd?? Only UMNO/BN government practices nonsense "CAKAP TAK SERUPA BIKIN".

Who in the public made that stupid suggestion ? I know of a government who actually get their own people to be part of this "public" to make suggestions that are "friendly" to the government agenda will appearing to be "listening" to the public. Aiyoh2 macam ini pun boleh.

28 days is enough to force confession out of most people.

Mansuhkan ISA

Just remove it. It was meant for the time when communist activities was active. Now that they are gone, why keep it?

Government must be trying their best to reduce budget deficit. If cops and IGP starts to wear shorts like the good old days, then confirm govenrment has run out of money.

Do they not understand English, or do they want to understand it at all???!!

Reducing the detention days is not what the general public wants. We want to see reform in how the Act is use and not use by the politicians in power against political oppositions (in their own views and discretion) - It should be use against real national threats.

No lah, my fren, the standard of English has declined to a very low level that's why it's hard to understand well what the public wants.

It is very sad that the "gomen" don't understand that it is not the number of days a person is detained...even if a person is wrongfully detained for 1 minute it is still wrong because it means for 1 minute his freedom has been taken away. We are talking about wrongful detention it doesn't matter how many days they change it to it is still wrongful detention.
