IT was recently reported that the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) spent RM1.2 million on a pedestrian walkway in Section 5, Petaling Jaya. There was uproar from residents because of the exorbitant cost involved.

By KW Mak (The Nut Graph)

In the report, MBPJ Mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman said he knew nothing of the expenditure and that he would not have approved it had he been aware. This however begs the question as to what kind of control measures are in place for the council's expenditure.

Assuming that the figure involved, as provided by the residents who said they were reliably informed, accurately reflects the true cost of the pedestrian walkway, questions need to be raised.

Questions aplenty

MBPJ councillors passed a resolution in November 2008 whereby all projects that cost more than RM20,000 must be first tabled at the finance committee. This committee is tasked with vetting through the applications based on several criteria such as the need for the project, the value to the cost, and the urgency.

Despite this mechanism of control, the pedestrian walkway project was never tabled at the finance committee meeting.

blatant spending of public funds.

sack the council head if he cannot justify and knows nothing about this.

let somebody else who knows about whats happening to manage the council.
not somebody who knows nothing.

and what is the MACC doing? still investigating the cow issue?

Of course the Mayor knew nothing of this incident. Ignorance is the fall back position for any Malay accused of incompetence

I think you will find that his job entails him having his finger on the pulse of everything under his control.

So where got ignorance???... Surely its got nothing to do with his race????

Of course it would be unnecessary for me to say that a duly elected council, elected by the community it serves would virtually eliminate the massive incompetence and waste which is the modus operandi of Local Government

My goodness we have such idiots helming the city council. Change for the sake of change is a recipe for incompetence while appearing to be doing something.

Firstly, as per the The Star Metro's report of June 22 , the Resident Association Section 5 PJ's stance was that the 1st expenditure for the replacement of the interlocking bricks pavement ( which incidentally were in good condition ) in December 2008 was a waste of good money . It was believed that RM1.2 million was spent .
MBPJ compounds the wastage of rate payers money by doing another ' replacement ' less than 7 months later at a cost exceeding several hundred thousands ringgit.
Everything should have been planned and executed in the first expenditure in late 2008 . Afterall , it wasn't as if the issue of " diabled friendly " needs suddenly arose between December 2008 and now . Surely the heads of departments have attended enough seminars & briefings to know about Agenda 21 , etc .

The Mayor was certainly ' scrapping the bottom of the barrel ' giving the excuse that he was not consulted nor would he have agreed to the second expenditure espcailly in light of the revelation that all expenditure above RM20k needs to go thru the Finance Committee .
Anyway.... as they say... " ignorance is no excuse ".... so he MUST act to take to task whoever then that had approved the second expenditure ( which the Mayor had publicly said he was against ).
Which " little napolean " has exceeded his authority , and has given the PKR Selangor Government a bad image in this instance ???

You guys think a RM1.2 million expenditure on a public walkway is outrageous? Did anyone take a look at this year's budget allocation for PJ? If I'm not mistaken, there was an allocation of RM800,000 for renovation of the datuk bandar's house. Yes, his goddamned house...are they installing gold-plated toilets or something?
