This online news portal is at it again. Twisting and turning the facts. Casting a story in a manner that puts words into people’s mouth or to fit their version of what the “facts” or “truth” should be.

One wonders whose insider they really are when they keep displaying their bias and prejudices for all to see. Lately, they have resorted to a frame-up of celebrated Umno politician/Deputy Minister, Mukhriz Mahathir in way that leads to the conclusion that Mukhriz is OK with the proposed third bridge to Singapore. Listen and judge for yourselves as to what Mukhriz said and what was reported.

Mukhriz’s view on the subject (audio file, In Video segment): http://www.mukhriz.com/

Contrast it with this piece: http://www.themalaysianinsider.com.my/index.php/malaysia/29777-mukhriz-plays-safe-on-bridge

Mukhriz clearly states that it is not his place to agree or disagree and voiced his opinion. The Malaysian Insider’s lede is “Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir wants the government to continue discussing the possibility of a third bridge with Singapore even though Umno leaders are against it.”

Is this journalism or spin doctoring?

You be the judge.

The headline of this article in the Malaysian Insider "Mukhriz plays safe on bridge", seems to be an attempt at spin, i.e. interpreting an event in a particular way so as to manipulate public opinion for or against a certain organization or public figure.

The expression "to play (it) safe" means "to avoid taking risks". In a political context, it can imply that the person involved believed in a particular policy or course of action, but lacked the courage of his convictions to advocate or execute it openly.

However, the article that followed presented no evidence to show that Mukhriz believed that the "third bridge" must be built somehow, but had dialled down his statement to avoid criticism etc.

So, is the Malaysian Insider indulging in spin? In my opinion, spinning the news is totally unbecoming of any news organization that wants to be trusted by its readers.

It is about reading in between the lines. It is still not blatant lies like what Utusan Malaysia newspaper did all this time.

It may be politically incorrect to go against the wishes of the majority but didn't Mukhriz very agreeable to the 3rd bridge when Pak Lah was PM? Anyway, did he outrightly disagree with a 3rd bridge? If not, isn't he implying that the 3rd bridge is o.k.?

malgal has got it right. The best (& perhaps the only effective) way to register our dissaproval of media lies & spin is to hit them where it hurts: circulation. Boycott such media & support the ones which you believe are fair & unbiased.

There is one more way good to combat media spin: analyse & prove it for others to see as well.
