Lee runs a tight ship and Singapore’s pre-eminent position as a modern, affluent and corruption free society owes entirely to his vision and his determination.

By Tunku Abdul Aziz, MySinchew

I BEGIN with a confession. I may be fairly described as a dyed in the wool admirer of Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s Minister Mentor. I am pleased that his recent visit to our country went well. He was received and treated as an honoured visitor, in the grand palaces and everywhere else he went, as well he should, because Lee undoubtedly played an important and historic role in the creation of Malaysia as a political entity. That is a historical fact.

I am glad that Lee gave Mahathir a wide berth. It would have left a bad taste in the mouth if he had asked to meet the bitter old man of Malaysian politics. Mahathir could have been relied upon to be obnoxious and boorish as only Mahathir knows how. His reference to Lee as the little emperor from a small Middle Kingdom is vintage Mahathir, dripping with venom and uncharitable innuendoes. The man, Mahathir I mean, is a total disgrace to the Malay sense of gracious hospitality and traditional decorum. I suppose the kindest thing to do is to ignore Mahathir and let him continue to entertain the sad fantasy that he is an indispensable part of our country’s process of governance.

Lee Kuan Yew is far from perfect. His record on human rights and media freedom is well documented, and there is not a great deal to choose between his and ours. We should wipe off that feeling of smugness. On balance, though, Lee runs a tight ship and Singapore’s pre-eminent position as a modern, affluent and corruption free society owes entirely to his vision and his determination. What he has achieved for his country in the face of the hopelessly impossible challenges says a great deal about his single minded devotion to public duty in the public interest. Enriching himself or his family has never been part of his game plan.

He has never wavered in his belief right at the outset that corruption, humanity’s greatest curse, was not going to be a feature of Singapore’s governance model. His administration is both clean and efficient, and Singapore’s economy is among the most competitive in the world. Judged against most indicators, Singapore is among the top global performers. While we wallow in corruption and are daily buffeted by one financial scam after another, the ‘Little Red Dot’ – the highly offensive name former President Habibi of Indonesia gave Singapore - continues to notch one accolade after another. Singapore has shown that size does not matter.

I am often asked the reason for my being such a loyal Lee Kuan Yew fan. It goes a long way. As I have said, he is not without a blemish or two, but no man has done more to curb corruption in public life as Lee, to the eternal gratitude of his people who are well served by a corruption free civil service and political leadership. The benefits for Singapore have been enormous in reputational terms. Investors know that their investments are safer in Singapore than in many other jurisdictions because Singapore operates a justice system that is incorruptible.

Singapore has succeeded in curbing corruption to a degree that is rarely achieved elsewhere in Asia, except possibly Hong Kong. Singapore does not need a bloated anti-corruption bureaucracy such as we have with our ineffectual Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission that is a drain on public funds. But what Singapore has in large measure is political will riding on the shoulders of a remarkable leader whose abhorrence for corruption takes on an almost messianic crusade. When we think of Singapore before Lee Kuan Yew, what comes to mind was a country that was a corrupt colonial backwater, filthy, ugly and smelly, not unlike Hong Kong at that time in its history.

Today, Singapore has shown the world that by confronting corruption decisively, and by putting in place systems and policies specifically to make unethical public behaviour a high risk and low return business, a country will become competitive which is the name of the game in the globalised economy. How do we fare by comparison?

The government, in spite of protestations to the contrary, tolerates corruption in all its manifestations. I am not just talking about money changing hands. That is bribery, but equally insidious is bending the rules and exploiting loopholes with a view to defrauding the nation’s coffers. The Port Klang Free Zone scandal is a case in point, and yet we are being told to move on without any of the perpetrators being called to account for their part in this multi-billion ringgit swindle. The government must do its duty in ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice. A scandal of this order of magnitude even for a country such as ours that is so used to living cheek by jowl with grand corruption on a daily basis beggars the imagination. We wait with bated breath to see what Najib will do in this case. Or is he no different from Mahathir and Badawi?

Through sheer force of character, and leading by example, Lee Kuan Yew has been able to make a difference to the lives of his people. Singapore is able today to punch way above its weight. It is a respected name, human rights NGOs may disagree, and I for one wish Singapore well in its relentless fight against man’s most debilitating social ill.

Tunlu, we most forget that Tun Mahathir has an Indian side to him. The crude side seems to come that side of his family since his behaviour is "unMalay". I am afraid that in whatever little of my lifetime is left, we are not going to see a Malaysia achieving anything like Singapore standard. We have to thank Mahathir for that. They say if you take care of the little things, the big things will take care of themselves. Hardly any Malaysian would not have missed a whole family of 3-5 persons happily going on a m/cycle as if there is no law against it. They happen even in KL city. Does anyone complain? Where are our traffic police? But 5 people holding a candle light vigil are immediately noticed!

At ripe old age, LKY still untiringly travels around the globe to seek out opportunities and the best for Singapore ,

Now look at Mahatahi, at his age, he is still poisoning, fooling and misleading his people !! Mahatahi is the the biggest scourge of Malaysia

The difference is in having technocrats in the Cabinet, not just any goons. Look at our Cabinet compared to Singapore's. The big difference lies right there. When you have people who can't tell the difference between the front and rear ends of a horse then we will never be able to get to the right direction.

Corruption is less in Singapore becos if you are caught, there is no kopi money and you cannot get away. Enforcement is good.

The government ministers are accountable to the public and their representatives and they dare not do hanky panky like Malaysia. The credit goes to the Raayat of Singapore.

Social ills like Prostituition, gambling and gangsterism is still there. Go to Geyland and visit Jalan Geylang 1 to don't know what and you will find all kind of prostitutes doing their trade there. Every wife's nightmare!

The other good side of Singapore is that there is no NEP, ketuanan Melayu and the keris symbol. Instead the symbol most Singaporean feared is the S$ sign.

For Malaysia to reach the economi status of Singapore.... another 20 years maybe. The Raayat must yearn for more from their Representatives and choose better ones now! Ministers and Representatives like Toyo, M & M, Dr. M ...etc.. are now gone but we still have many left still in the Cabinet. All these must go before anything better can come

Adios, najis everywhere... either we clean it or ensure the dog does not do his business everywhere he likes and make our life difficult.

LKY legacy is clear and respected. What is Mahathir's legacy? It stinks to high heaven, scandal after scandal, from overpriced and outdated Protons to the korrect korrect korrect courts.

We could have been a great nation like Singapore. But I guess the pie in the sky bogus issues of Race, Royalty, and Religion trump the genuine daily quality of life. It's sad that the bogeyman still works, perpetuated by those driving around in their fancy cars and living in palatial mansions, while the majority barely scrap by in the kapcai and beatup Protons. My cynical side says these suckers deserve it, too bad the rest of us has to be taken down too.

Kris should not talk crap"looking into the ROYAL COMMISSION" !!! You are stalling. You are Evading. You are looking for new paths in the RC maze to use as escape routes. You are waiting for cousin Jibby to lay a stronger foundation to entrench his footings deeply into the ground using you and the whole national machinery to soon crown him as MUGARBISH. Before you further continue to play cat and mouse with the RAKYAT please take a hint from the takdir that has befallen SADDAM H. of IRAQ. Didn't Kris see what happened to those hangmen of Saddam some of whom were closely related to him (SADDAM ) ? Of course Saddam did do a fantastic drama by instantly marching out most of his detracters from the parliament and executed all but one to return to parliament to "live to tell" ! SO, what is the end like Kris ? There is no where to hide when that time comes. See how Nazi big gun criminals were brought back from as far as South America to be tried in the international courts ? The RAKYAT, especially the PR leaders may be at wits end as to how to deal with UMNOBARU/BN and the whole machinery but like the situation in IRAQ, a knight in shining armour will soon ride into Malaysia to release all righteous Malaysians from your clutches. It may happen sooner than later than you would wish for .

Singapore is not perfect, they have their problems and mistakes, I agreed. What is important is we should know what are their strengths and what are our weaknesses. Learn from them to make us strong rather than to pick up their mistakes. It won't do good for us. Don't make their mistakes ours.

If they have a proven way to combat corruption effectively through strong political will and efficient adminstration system, then, we Rakyat must vote for an alternative government that, at least, attempt and willing to change our corrupted system and clear all the najis.

The discussion should be directed to a constructive way, objectively, rather than mere name callings.

///The man, Mahathir I mean, is a total disgrace to the Malay sense of gracious hospitality and traditional decorum. ///–Tunku Abdul Aziz

The man does not follow Malay custom and he is technically not Malay according to Article 160; he is tru and tru a Mammak.

If LKY is said to be a dictator, then he is like a benevolent absolute monarch, and he works for the interests of the people.

Mahathir have good reasons, to himself, to resent the visit of LKY. LKY could have been a very important leader for Malaysia if TDM did nothing to earn the reputation of Malay ultra in the 1960s, and if Jaafar Albar did not organize the 1964 riots on Prophet Mohamad’s birthday procession, which among others led to the eventual separation of Singapore.

Mahathir said that it would be meaningless to Malays in Malaysia if Malaysia had attained the standards of Singapore if Malays did not rule in Malaysia. To him so long as Malays rule, the country would be perfectly successful even if it has gone down to the level of Zimbabwe or Myanmar. That is the definitional views of a racist.

TDM considered ten millions and more Malays in Malaysia were happy to remain in low income group compared to the world, so that Mahathir, a NEWMalay barely qualify by the grace of Article 160 of the constitution, could be emperor. As absolute monarch, he was able to dictate to Malay Rulers regarding their personal behaviours and he could choose NEWMalays and original Malays at his pleasure to become fabulously rich through easy to national coffers, or through availing monopolistic rights. Their wealth facilitated money politics. It s the misfortune of Malaysia that the supreme leader for two decades chose to use race to discriminate against other races, at the expense of Malays too.

Mahathir needs not apologize to Mammaks since Mammaks gain both financial and political power during his reign but true Malays suffered primarily for earning a lower income and purchasing power, compared to the world.

NEP was utilised by Mahathir to give the impression that Malays enjoyed unparallel benefits. This is especially so when it is looked upon as giving Malays an easy lives, without any consideration to make the race proud of their achievements. A little reflection would reveal that despite their hard work, Malays did not benefit fully from the learning efforts they put in because they had been misled in schools by low quality teachers. The teachers whose quality was suspect because they enrolled at a low entry standard into teachers training colleges and universities as a concession to Malays. Further Malays who failed to meet the prescribed standards were allowed to graduate, because of the special privilege accorded to them. Such graduates lower the standards of performance in government services, and the citizens suffer collectively. But as teachers, they produced low quality students despite the efforts put in by the students, and that contributed to the cause of having some 60,000 unemployable graduates. Certainly some among those of similar standards ended up as teachers who unknowingly mislead their students, and the vicious circle continues. Even as Malays graduates ended up as competent professionals, their capacity was always in doubt. UMNO politicians would only openly criticise successful Malays as the product of NEP when they are no longer in UMNO, and to UMNO leaders all successful Malays owe their gratitude to UMNO. The efforts put in by Malays are not even recognised by UMNO Malays, and non-Malays know the sensitivity to keep assessment to themselves.

UMNO leader who had graduated from abroad simply have no respect for local graduates, and they had arranged for the sons, daughters and relatives of the cronies to receive overseas scholarships. That was why the list of successful candidates for scholarships award is state secret.

The ills in the country started after May 13, and TDM had a big hand in Malaysia’s decline. LKY’s visit reminds him of his failings, and TDM had to divert attention. Not all the people can be fooled all the time.

It is a historical fact that LKY played a part in the creation of Malaysia. What made the difference is thereafter, when 2 political views just could not see eyes to eyes for the future of Malaysia. One preferred the racial divides for a Malay Malaysia and the other preferred meritocracy for a Malaysian Malaysia. The rest is history, and the presence is what we have inherited to-day, a successful island nation and struggling hinterland.

Although LKY is far from perfect, he has shown how success can be achieved by hard works and corrupt free society. There was no choice and it was survival of the newly minted island nation build of no natural resources but only on human and brain power.

LKY did what is now perceived as right for the people. However, to make things work, one has to be firm, maybe ruthless and hard headed. If history is the guide, the action and the mean appears the same with any new dynasty or nation in its infancy state. It is good for Singapore to the envy of Malaysia especially Mahathir.
The LKY to-day is a much mellowed down, though clear minded, man in his 80's unlike the Mahathir we have, who is always full of bitterness & envies to his adversaries. My wish for Singapore is that when success is attained, there is longer a need for draconian rules, especially rules that stifle opposing views and alternatives. The idea of responsible opposition to check and balance is important for the success for democracy to continue to flourish.

If Singapore can claim to be first world now, then it is time to show the world that it can also allow opposition to have a meaning place in the political arena. The best men shall win the heart of the people and shall be given the mandate to govern, just like the support the people of Singapore has continuously given to the ruling party for the last 50 years. It is a not bad to think of a 2-party system emerging in Singapore as well. In the light of this, Singapore should start dismantling the group representation system. Although it is unique, it is not a system whereby the voter has no other choice just because there is a big guy in the team to help those weaker members of the team. People should be given a choice on the individual to represent them.

Godflesh has painted a picture negatively of the family link GLCs and with the current PM being the son of LKY are cronyism, nepotism and corruption “of the highest order”. Although I do not entirely disagree with his view, I beg to differ on the harshness of the criticism. Given that the PM has the father’s backing to start with, the position is not without responsibility. Well, the Singapore government, just like any family, would like to see their wealth invested in some profitable ventures. Investing one’s monies or capitals is a double edged sword. One may make gain and one may also lose. In the end there is a price to pay. If the PM continues to work hard and provide the best interest to the nation, the people will continue to support him and his team. If the PM and his team is critically as corrupt as the BN, then the March-08 Tsunami can also happen in Singapore. Corruption happens everywhere, big and small. I would say in Singapore, it is very small. But I am always very sure the Singapore government will relentlessly weed out this pestilence.

The Tunku is right to end his article by saying that through sheer force of character, and leading by example, LKY has been able to make a difference to the lives of his people.

But then Mahathir is not a true Malay - his father was an Indian from Kerala. So he definitely lacked the traditional Malay sense of graciousness.

Malaysia will never eradicate corruption & be managed like Singapore! Never! Not in a million years. The civil servants' mindset & bad attitude cum with entitlement mentality will be one of the biggest hindrances. Civil servants who don't perform, take bribes, cannot be fired. Most civil servants are Malays. What does that tell you?

As long as a corrupt govt is in place, there is no political will to eradicate corruption. As long as Malays are brainwashed into believing "ketuanan melayu" and other similar rhetoric which rang hollow to our ears, there will not be a change of federal govt. As long as Malays receive an inferior education, they are not going to progress. And as long as BTN exist plus other stupid quota on scholarships, the talented will flee this country & go over to the Little Red Dot (habibie looks like a monkey & he is definitely an idiot).

I was just reading a report in the star abt a little girl's death - her name was Lai Mei Ying. She went in and out of Raub GH but the medical "professionals" there were unable to treat her according to her illness. Obviously they did not know what was wrong with her.

This is probably due to quota practice in local unis, students take medicine when they are not going to become real doctors even when they "graduate". It's scary, the future, when people go to public hospitals, they will go home in a body bag. How many of these unqualified medical personnel do we have in this country? It's really scary, to be ill and the "doctor" unable to treat you because he himself doesn't even know what ails you.

Hence I repeat to this bloody bn govt.: to hell with your stupid system of quota & throwing meritocracy into the drain. This is the future. A country full of half-baked "professionals" - BN is destroying this country, every sector that matters is slowly going to hell!

As long as we want to make a comparison in most matters arising as most BN leader or ministers like to do, where its always not apple to apple comparison, we are making excuses for our own failures. Example when we talk abt crime rates, our ministers will come up and say that per capita crime rate in Malaysia is lower than Singapore and etc. But again like the "syok sendiri syndrome" and also with the recent KPI BS they will have an escape route for their failure with remarks like this or a measurement that bypasses the actual facts. Hence at the end the citizens do not feel any improvement but the govt will announce their achievement.

In the case of the the crime rate, let me tell you a lot of it is not reported. What is reported is only those that they want you see!! On top of that, the classification of the crime is also not properly classified (eg rape, robbery, mugging, etc) Some are not even classified apple to apple as what is reported by other countries. If such is the case dont hope for crime rates to really fall. Looks at the recent police stint and operations which they reported to have brought down the crime. See how long that stint lasted and operation continued......? Our situation is really bad and it cannot be acted upon with just one operation. And yet we want to make excuse and compare with others.

Over here in Malaysia everyone knows the danger of mat rempit, muggers, snatch thieves, robbers, incest ....and list goes on. Base on this we are vigilant. So how can you compare with Singapore even (if its against per capita when the ppl there do not feel unsafe like we do.

This brings me to the point on busting corruption when its done properly our crime rate will go down. At the moment how many of us know for a fact that our police is corrupted? I think the answer is we all do. And this critism has not help in any way to reduce the corruption or worst a real action to control and later abolish this practice like in Singapore. We cannot even control a state like Perak properly. How can royalty get involve as well in the running of a state or country (look at Johor) With the announcement by Sultan of Johor that the bridge should not be sanction, look at the stock markets and punters and etc. on those contractor appt for the Iskandar project. Drop!! So basically all the negative action of the govt up to to its govt bodies (like the police) has created a chain reaction and even the royalty has a say in the running of the country.

If we really want to see the country succeed we should start with the "no excuse culture" here and our measurement for success must be as real as it gets. I will finish off by comparing MAS our local carrier under Datuk Idris Jalal. As soon as he recognise the real problem ie corruption, poor management, poor culture, and he was real abt it.....look at what happen...a turnaround. He was real to the situation and he was daring to take the action while everyone critise him. Look who is laughing now.

In Senior Mister LKY's case nobody will dispute his successes in developing Singapore. He identified their main resource of the country as Human Resource and he dealt in every aspect of developing that including his stance on corruption. That is more than I can say for Mahathir whose successes also came with a lot of luck in this resource rich country which is undermined.

It is difficult to get any unbiased opinion about LKY from readers in Malaysia. For majority of the Malays in Malaysia to acknowledge LKY as a world class asian leader would mean to subscripe to the 'outside of Malaysia view' of the chinese being a superior race. And that would then mean that all that the Malays have achieved thus far is 'not upto par' on a level-playing-field assessment. Therefore it is only natural that most Malays in Malaysia have a somewhat biased negtive opinion about LKY.

Then how does one judge LKY viz-a-viz the great old man of Malaysian politics? Well, I can think of one way.

I have this book written by LKY, a 778 page documentation of his version of Singapores History titled 'FROM THIRD WORLD TO FIRST - The Singapore Story: 1965-2000'.

The luminaries who have written glowing preface (and I mean truly glowing preface)for the cover of the books include - Kofi Annan (former UN secretary), Kim Dae Jung (president of the ROK), Dr. Henry Kissinger (former US Secretary of State), Margaret Thatcher (former British PM), George Bush (former US President), Jacques Chirac (former French President), George Shultz (former US State Secretary), Gerald Ford (former US President), Helmut Kohl (former German Chancellor), Kiichi Miyazawa (for Japanese PM), Prem Tinsulanonda (former Thai PM), Chuan Leekpai (former Thai PM), Tun Daim (former Malaysian FM), Tony Blair (former British PM), Edward Heath (former British PM), James Callaghan (former British PM), Malcom Fraser (former Australian PM), Bob Hawke (former Australian PM), Paul Keating (former Australian PM), James Bloger (former NZ PM)and William Rees-Mogg (Editor Times of London). Not to mention another dozen or so lesser important political, corporate and cultural leaders of our time.

The questions now are - If Mahathir were to embark on such a book writing venture, would he be able to get such profuse acknowledgements from world luminaries as LKY has got for his work and his thoughts. And if so, who would be the ones to provide such prefaces?

The reflection of the above questions themselves will provide one with the answers. No need for the answers to be verbalised. Just thinking about the issue in itself will provide a silent answer as to each of the two men's worth as seen by the rest of the world.

After writing my comment, there are still moronic idiots esp the one after who dont seem to understand what corruption is doing to the country. If he had written that Chinese are problem in the loan shark business I may agree to a certain extend. But instead he thinks that bribery to the Chinese just becoz most are Chinese readers are really out of context.

My comment to you R020998 is you dont have a single idea of what corruption is doing to the country except to push the problem to someone else. A problem is a problem as I have said earlier until you recognise it and be real, you will continue to blame everyone else.

Beside handling corruptions maybe foolish young malaysian investors and politicians alike could learn something valuable from the wise old LKY on how to invest and loss billions of dollars

MatAwang - sure you should learn from wise old LKY. First he made sure that Singapore got US$168 billion to invest. Okay, so what, say he lost 30% - there's still US$118 billion. And mind you, only part of those loss of 30% are actual realized losses (when they sold the stocks), the rest are unrealized losses (still holding on to those stocks) and can be recovered when stock prices rebound. And where did those billions come from in the first place to be invested? Yes, from prior investments and savings. They didn't have petroleum, rubber, palm oil, minerals, gas, and what-have-you.

On the other hand, in Bolehland, you already lost 70% of the money even before you invest through pilfering, plundering, commissions, grease money, consultancy fees, wastage and fraud. What happened to your RM12.5 billion dumped into Port Klang Free Zone? Is that your idea of wise investments? What happened to the billions poured into black holes such as Proton, Perwaja Steel, MAS, etc, etc? What happened to the hundreds of billions of profits (not revenue) from Petronas over the past few decades? Disappeared into thin air? And what are the losses from Khazanah?

Yes, we all should learn how to invest from Daim, TDM and Najib. I mean, why take the risk and invest in international stocks and properties when you can earn hundreds of millions and billions in commissions by buying fighter planes and submarines? Why bother when you can make hundreds of millions for NOT building the crooked bridge?

Yes, MatAwang - we all should learn from the genius investors from BN.

OK that’s it. No more “ang pau” money for the next Chinese New Year and “duit raya” for this coming Hari Raya from singaporean.

p.s. demonstrating how to conceal bribery to the young ones and how it is insidiously done annually.

Dear Gurkha,

I dont believe in stereotyping ppl however the Govt bodies (the officers and senior officers)like in the police, traffic police, the bomba, the govt hospital ambulances service, the customs officer, the municiples, telekom, govt tenders etc has all asked for bribes. Unfortunately most if not all are Malays. So what do I make of it. I try not to think of it this way but our daily lives revolves around it.
