What’s the matter with SIS? PDF Print

By Jacqueline Ann Surin, The Nut Graph

WHAT do you know? Politicians from across the divide are actually united on an issue. The issue? The threat that Sisters in Islam (SIS) poses as a Muslim women's rights organisation that may be deviating from the faith.

The latest spotlighting on SIS — just one of many through the 20 years of the non-governmental organisation's existence — began on 7June 2009 when the PAS muktamar passed without debate a resolution calling for the National Fatwa Council to investigate SIS. The resolution, moved by Shah Alam PAS, said that if SIS was found to be anti-Islam, it should be banned and its members rehabilitated.

Since then, both Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR)'s Zulkifli Noordin and Umno's Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo have said that SIS should drop the word "Islam" from its name. Zulkifli even suggested that SIS should be investigated under the Syariah Criminal Offences Enactments and the Penal Code as if the organisation was a criminal suspect.

So, just what is it about SIS that is deemed to be so threatening to Islam, to Muslims and to the nation? How does an organisation, founded by Muslim women to understand and uphold their religion's teachings on justice and compassion, become such a threat that it needs to be investigated, banned and reformed?

In the article, the author asks, "Who speaks for Islam?". Well, whoever it is that should speak for Islam, it's certainly not the author, who's not a Muslim herself.

Darkness flees from the light

Lies fear the truth

SIS too often directly points out the harsh truths.

This makes the ulamaks fear. Truth cannot be corrected. So truth must be suppressed.

>WHAT do you know? Politicians from across the divide are actually united on an issue]]

I continued scanning the rest of the article because of this rather misleading lead-in! Perhaps she should simply say "politicians from both BN and the Opposition" as "from across the divide" often refers to political thought/stance/philosophy rather than party affiliation. So "rightwingers of all stripes" or even "extremists from all Muslim-majority parties" might be more apporpriate.

Hey, the high and mighty Muslim men, if you want the Muslim women to behave themselves and follow all the rules and regulations set down by Islamic doctrine and teaching, YOU, and YOU ONLY have to lead the way:

Before you marry for the 2nd time, make sure you get permission from your first wife, not running to the Siamese border to get an illegal marriage certificate.

Secondly, you GOT to have a good reason for wanting to have another wife, e.g. the wife is too sick to 'entertain' you, or she abuses you physically or mentally.

Thirdly, you GOT to have enough money in your bank account to pay the bills for 2 families..

Fourthly, you GOT to be extremely fair to both the wives. For instance,if a handbag costs $100.00 is given to the first wife, and the handbag given to the second wife costs $100.09, you have already committed a sin of being unfair to the first wife!!

Fifthly, never to touch your wives' money without their consent, cos' it is haram to use your wives' money without their approval!!

Sixthly, you GOT to provide the same amount of affection for the wives, the slightest trace of difference is going to cause you unforgivable sin!!!

Do you Muslim men understand the concept of wanting to have more than a lawful wife, instead of curi curi kahwin for indulgence'sake, and land yourselves in God's WRATH!!!

Well to the Arabs Malaysia is also perceived to be deviating from true Islam. To the Malays, Malaysia is truly Islamic by with a local flavour/twist!

Perhaps SIS is but a feminine perspective of Islam!

Or maybe our very religious men fearing a takeover are taking preemptive actions. Imagine what havoc may be wrought if the fairer sex take a lead from their Kenya sisters!

SIS have always worked within the Islamic framework and even has syariah lawyers in their employ .
Having said that , sometimes there is too much of negative 'women's lib' energy emanating from them that impedes the message of defending women's rights .

Toyol is a scumbag who is proud to be an UMNOPUTRA Muslim. Z Noordin is a bigot and DSAI should have the guts to kick him out of PKR.

Sisters in Islam is actually fighting for women's right. not for Muslim women. they say they follow the teachings of Islam, but do they? Take for example, The prophet Muhammad pbuh had never mentioned that women can be the imam in a Friday prayer. But Amina wadud has the audacity to do so. Tell me, which verse of the quran, of which hadith or which narration from the prophet's companions, or which fatwa from which ulama allowed Friday prayer to be led by a woman? furthermore, the prayer was done congregationally with male and female prayed side by side, as if it was following prayers in a church by christian.

This SIS should be banned, bring insult to Islam and its followers. They say they practice Islam, have the conscience to speak about Islam, but, behind close doors, practice the opposite.

**** off SIsters in islam.
