By Deborah Loh, The Nut Graph

IN his interview with The Nut Graph yesterday, Puchong Member of Parliament (MP) Gobind Singh Deo spoke about being suspended from attending the Dewan Rakyat, and how the loss of an MP's salary affects an elected representative's service to constituents.

Gobind, who is blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin's lawyer, was suspended for alleging Datuk Seri Najib Razak's involvement in the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder case during a parliamentary debate.

In the second and final part of this interview, Gobind talks about raising unpopular questions in Parliament, something his father, DAP chairperson Karpal Singh, is also famous for.

The first-time MP also shares his thoughts on Pakatan Rakyat's future.

The Federal Court just ruled that the Perak Speaker has no authority to punish Zambry. How would this affect Gobind's suspension?

I am a DAP/PKR/PAS supporter so dont get me wrong that I sometimes find Asian politicians in general, and Malaysian politicians in particular, are unstatesmen like in the parliament. It is a pleasure to watch the debates of USA or England (I do not speak French or German or Japanese) or even the Hongkong's legistlature. Their debates are sharp and sometimes the members are even raucus with table banging or "hear, hear" being shouted but points are made even when being satirical or critical. Our Malaysian parliamentary debates are never about points but name callings and quickly degenerate into personal attacks. It is like a street brawl in a wet market. With due respect to Gorbin, I think we cannot all blame BN because we gave them the justification. We should behave like statesmen and show how boorish they are rather than lower ourselves to their level to compete in boorishness. Whatever things brought up in parliament should be substantiated. Parliamentary immunity is not for street brawls. Accusing Najib a murderer in the parliament, a sacred place of democracy is a very serious matter unless one had solid evidence. Otherwise we will make parliament into a place of mud slinging without evidence. We do not like to see parliamentary immunity as a shield to be used for pernal attack because this kind be a double edge sword that cuts both ways.
