PAS finding its way still : Some Observations on the Speech by PAS President Ustaz Hadi Awang PDF Print

The opening speech to the 55th Muktamar of the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party PAS should be read closely and given the consideration that is due to it, particularly as it comes from the party President himself, Ustaz Hadi Awang, and in some respects gives an accurate reflection of the state of the party and the mindset of its senior leadership.

Having said that, the speech of Hadi Awang that was delivered during the opening session of the Muktamar was both rich and complex, and should be read closely by those of us who are interested in the political fortunes of PAS and the future of the party in Malaysia.

Perhaps the most salient feature of the speech was the straightforward declaration of PAS’s oppositional stand vis a vis UMNO, which was described by Hadi in his speech in rather negative terms. The tone of Ustaz Hadi’s speech would resonate with the members of PAS who were worried about any possible compromise on the part of their own Islamist party and the possibility of a PAS-UMNO tie-up in the near future. After describing UMNO as a party that was materialist, corrupt and a lackey to the British colonial powers in the past, one can safely assume that any notion of a PAS-UMNO marriage of convenience has been put on the shelf for the moment at least…

However it was also noted by this observer that Ustaz Hadi’s speech had few references to the Pakatan Rakyat, whose other component parties – notably the PKR and DAP – were casually referred to as fellow travelers in the long cause. One wonders how and why the references to the other parties of the Pakatan seemed rather tame and lukewarm at best, and where PAS was locating itself in the overall constellation of Malaysian politics in the immediate present. Indeed, where is PAS heading?

It is interesting to note that the slogan for the Muktamar was ‘Islam leading the process of Change’ (Islam Memimpin Perubahan). Furthermore the speech was littered with numerous references to the Ulama of PAS and the role that the Ulama have played not only in the development of the party but also in the history of Malaysia as a whole.

But sometimes it is ironic to fnd that PAS members are talking the language of UMNO i.e. "melayu, melayu melayu" when they should be talking about the beuty of Islam as the way of life, regardless of race. That is when they want to get projects from other than BN ruled states of the Fed gov. (I wont say BN government because I am a Malaysian, and it is supposed to be MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT)

!. Race, religion, ulama 2. race, religion, ulama, 3. race, religion, ulama. So what else is new? Ulama should lead, rightfully in the mosque. Politicians should lead political parties. If not, lawyers can do surgery and doctors can repair aeroplanes.

In a country like Malaysia where theres hardly another alongside to compare anywhere in the world,whether its PKR or BN as the ruling party,we as Malaysians only yearn for a goverment that can be fair and treat everyone as equal ! This is a simple and modest request and any leaders worth his 2sens should have no problem in fulfilling it ! Now that with the UMNO led govt on the down-ward trend ,we hope PAS,being one of the coalitions in PR must ensure the future leaders keep good to its record and promises. Same too,PKR and DAP must ensure concensus is an on going process where everything thats agreeded upon are strictly implemented at all time. Only then,can Malaysians of all races prosper and be united come the next GE !!! Yes,the future lies with PR !!!

Dear ssathia, June 05, 2009 21:31:47,

First and foremost, I wish to thank you for your comment which I believe you're addressing to PAS. Although I'm not the Admin of this blog and neither in the top leadership of PAS, however as an ordinary PAS member I felt called upon to respond to your comment.

You seemed to be over concerned on the “race, religion, and ulama” things. Well, actually I ‘m not surprised because being an outsider one may find it hard to understand PAS and tend to look at it on the surface and be sceptical. Whatmore when UMNO have been distorting the Islamic images of PAS and the religion of islam itself for the past 50 years or so.

Being an Islamist party where its members are majority of malay race and profess Islam, Pas cannot deny the importance of these issues along with matters pertaining to good governance, justice for all, freedom of expression,media and religion, and the well being of the rakyat as a whole, irrespective of race, creed and religion.

As a muslim and Pas member, we are always reminded, from time to time, to uphold the Islamic principles and to take Islam as a way of life. By this, we muslims must conduct ourselves in manner and purpose as stipulated in the Quran and the Hadiths. All our deeds and doings shall be accounted and answerable in the life after. So please understand that in PAS, being a muslim one cannot isolate religion with oneself.

Now coming back to PAS and its Muktamar that held today, we observed that some positive changes in leadership occurred. In particular the Deputy President post and the aspirations that come with it. Hence, one can expect a better and closer ties with other member parties in Pakatan Rakyat, viz PKR and DAP.

Having said the above, I’m not saying that PAS is perfect. And neither it is free from some hiccups and shortcomings as experiencing by PKR and DAP of lately. By this I mean,
(1)the Perak debacle which originated by the ‘3 1 KATAK LOMPAT’ incidents which lead to the downfall of the PR government in Perak and the subsequent events that took placed;
(2)the Aminah Saga that involved two senior party officials being accused of trying to bribe her just before the Penanti By-Election;
(3)the boycott protest by party officials in Penang against the Penang Chief Minister’s (YB Lim Guan Eng) decision in appointing the civil sevants for the post of President in Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) and Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP).

All the above problems and bad experiences were caused by party members of PKR and one from DAP. Hence so far, PAS managed to stand good and creditable.

Last but not least, I would like to remind that if we want a change in government at the FEDERAL level, PKR and DAP need PAS to make it possible.

Hence, give PAS the chance, in as much as PKR and DAP, the time needed and to prove their worth. Let’s not get ourselves to concern over trivial things and focus the BIG picture. Thank you.

Perak Boy, I agree with you. PAS has to date stand good and creditable safe for one independent candidate who stood under the banner of PAS. PKR seems to be infested with Trojans and are creating hiccups and shortcomings.

Oster in the above blog has a very good proposal and it is that of federalism. Every state gets to run its own show in every aspect. National security could perhaps be the federal government's concern. Such melting pot approach allows the best practices to emerge as well as allowing for a healthy cross-fertilisation of ideas and practices.

PAS president Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang,

A lot of people like me, the non Muslims are watching your every move.

We will never hesitate to reject PAS if you misbehave, you can be sure about that.

PKR & DAP will contest in 3 cornered fight in all elections if you KISS with UMNO.
