By Prema Devaraj, Programme Director, Women’s Centre for Change

THE Women’s Centre for Change, Penang (WCC) views with great concern the allegations made by Indonesian teenager Manohara Odelia Pinot regarding the physical, emotional and sexual violence she has endured in her marriage to a Kelantan prince.

WCC is glad to see that the Foreign Affairs Ministry has offered to help if Manohara files a complaint and we would strongly encourage Manohara to file a complaint as well as lodge a police report so that investigations can commence. Domestic violence is a criminal offence. Under the Domestic Violence Act (1994), domestic violence includes causing or threatening to cause physical injury, confining a person, damaging property or forcing a person to do something she can legally refuse to do.

A person found guilty of committing these acts can be charged under the Penal Code.

Domestic violence has been increasing steadily in recent years. In 2007, there were 3,756 cases of domestic violence reported to the police nationwide.

These figures are said to only represent the tip of the iceberg as many victims tend to keep silent over the abuse they receive.

Many are ignorant of the Act which can actually help protect victims from further abuse.

WCC views with deep concern the recent comments made by a Government leader that the Manohara issue was a personal matter.

WCC would like to stress that domestic violence is not a personal matter, but is of public concern, given that it is a crime.

To have a Malaysian leader trivialise allegations of domestic violence to a personal matter indicates that violence against women is still not understood nor taken seriously.

Given the Malaysian Government’s commitment to the passing of the Domestic Violence Act (1994) and as a signatory to the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, the Government is duty bound to investigate these allegations.

Hopefully WCC will also look deeper into the welfare of the plight of women in Malaysia that was being abuse by their husband or family and not just on the issue of Manohara.

Again, why do we need the monarchy?
One which cannot even bring up their offsprings properly, given all the money they suck. Also the criminal will never face criminal charges because he has blue pirate blood.

Of course it is a private domestic matter. Just like Najis-Roastma-Altantuya domestic matter.

Welcome to Malaysia. The land of lawlessness monarchy.

'WCC is glad to see that the Foreign Affairs Ministry has offered to help if Manohara files a complaint and we would strongly encourage Manohara to file a complaint as well as lodge a police report so that investigations can commence' very good, very good,

Why don't we 'Malaysia The Great Country' show that we walk the talk and in the Asean spirit have the "victim" lodge the report in her home country and we send our 'Prince' over to Jagkarta to answer to the 'Accusations'.

Let's be magnanimous & make this offer to the Indonesian Govt. over to you our Minister of Foreign Affairs.

If we have so much pride in 'Our Judicial System' what say we have a front seat to see how justice is served in our neighbor's Courts, would give us a first hand view of a Dutch based judicial system (correct me if I am wrong) to compare with our
? English ? or 'Malaysian' system.

Game for it our Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs?

I would say that should be the most honourable gesture / offer we can make in view of the seriousness of the charge of practically defileling their National Treasure.

WCC, do you think after having gone through the trauma with her so-called husband & escaped home to Indonesia, Pinot would dare to file a complain over here or even step into this Country again where Integrity & Human Rights is only the Talk but not the Walk.

Don't you see that this UMNOBN government is in for a change for the Alternate Government to take over come the next GE. They only Talk the Walk but not Walk the Talk in so many of the wrongs & cover-up committed again & again. Murder of foreigner/s, murders in police lock-up, wrongful detention, lightening police action against innocent Rakyats & supporters of the Alternate Government, swift & hasty decision by the kangaroo(lembu) members of the Judiciary in executing case in favour of UMNOBN cronies, corruption, abuse of powers & cover-up of criminal acts by those in the corridors of power.

With the current IGP's character & image in doubt of his integrity & trustworthiness, who dares to go the politised 'polis' force for assistance except for YB Michael Chong. Now a few of the ah longs are on the run as reported by the polis after the matter being highlighted by the YB some 3 months ago.

What were the polis doing all these years with the ah longs? They went round every housing estates putting up banners with phone no. contactable on the street name holders & 'flying' name cards into residential houses & shophouses & everywhere.

The Rakyats trust themselves & their dogs more than the PDRM now.

Mr Home Minister, the change must come or Malaysia is going down the drain in no time.

Bersih, Cekap dan Teguh.

Unquote:

It basically tells the world, the mentality of our ministers and their intelligence.

Meanwhile, to be fair, our embassy in JKT shoudl pay a visit to her and assist in the complaints or statements.
