Swifter to remove Nizar by a vote in assembly PDF Print

PAKATAN Rakyat has finally accepted the harsh reality that having Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin endorsed by the courts as the rightful menteri besar would not enable it to regain control of Perak.

By M. Husairy Othman

With Barisan Nasional having the support of the three independent assemblymen, it will only be a matter of time before Nizar is removed by a vote of no-confidence.

Even former menteri besar Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli Ghazali hinted strongly of this during Tuesday's press conference, minutes after a stay of execution to the High Court decision reinstating Nizar was granted.

"They will know (their fate) next week," the reserved ex-Perak BN chairman said in an unusual burst of fighting talk.

About the perception of BN's weakness, he said the coalition knew what it was doing but would not disclose its strategy to the enemy.

However, his successor, Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, was coy when asked whether an emergency sitting was the BN's next move.

"We will study the grounds of judgment first before deciding on the next course of action," he said.

Aware that BN would win a no-confidence motion against Nizar, Perak DAP chief Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham was the first to dismiss the possibility, saying that only the speaker, menteri besar or sultan could initiate a sitting of the assembly.

The former senior executive council member argued that the May 7 sitting was invalid and thus the speaker was still the DAP's V. Sivakumar.

Other Pakatan leaders, however, did not find his arguments convincing.

They have indicated a willingness to cooperate with the BN in finding ways to resolve the political impasse.

Political observers are of the opinion that Pakatan is fast running out of options.

"If they have the upper hand, do you honestly think that they will offer an olive branch to BN?

"By asking BN to agree to dissolve the state assembly and hold fresh elections, Pakatan knows full well what lies ahead (should an emergency sitting be held)," said one.

Another said that he would not be surprised if BN decided to avoid elections at all costs.

"The sentiment on the ground due to the hatred sowed by Pakatan against the coalition does not augur well for BN.

"It is only natural to try to cling on for political survival and carry out damage control in the next three years or so," he said.

While Pakatan claims to have full support of the rakyat, it has defined the popular will to its advantage.

There will be crowds at their ceramah, ranging from the hundreds to several thousands, but do they actually represent the rakyat?

With the prospect of having to wait for months before the legal contests in BN's takeover of the state are finally decided, it will be swifter to remove Nizar via a vote of no confidence.

I'm not sure where the writer is coming from.
He is stating a given.
This is precisely the point PR has been contesting.
The 3 ex PR ADUNs have sent in their resignayion letters.
Yes, I know they are contesting its validity.
But isn't it up to the courts to decide and not the Election Commission?

The idea that the BN Perak can make up for what has happened over the next 3 years is delusional. What has happened is not only unprecedented but times have changed and BN ability to recover is very limited. Take for example Badawi administration, what he essentially did was broke his earliest promise for reform but he went into election with a booming economy (although it later turn out to be a bubble!). He was still personally popular but his administration and UMNO/BN was not.

What has happened is worst than what happened under Badawi, much worst. There is a litany of negatives that BN has to overcome. Negatives they can't prove - the defection of the assemblymens was dirty, the judges were bias, they certaintly can't proof the police and civil service don't abuse their power for the BN. There is way too many and BN is just not that good or lucky, has never been and will never be...

Times are different now. People are no longer fooled that development is NOT done with THEIR MONEY OR power given to politicians by the people. Perak is at not the boondocks with a large population internet connected. Even fishing villages have internet cafes!

BN can't win. Its just a question whether the people pay for BN indulgence..

"The sentiment on the ground due to the hatred sowed by Pakatan against the coalition does not augur well for BN."

what kind of s skewered statement is this? if anyone sowed hatred against BN, it is BN itself with their thuggery in state assembly for the world to view. only BN can redeem themselves by doing what is right and that is to dissolve the assembly. the PM should not hide behind the Sultan. it must be pointed out the the Sultan refused to dissolve the assembly in the first place after his meeting with the PM.

M. Husairy Othman, tell us how to go about this: "it will be swifter to remove Nizar via a vote of no confidence", while the ongoing court cases never seem to end?

Yes, let's admit for once, we can remove Nizar but who will be that fool to file in notice of discontinuance in the court? Nizar? Siva? Pakatan?

Guys, I am astounded at the stupid statements coming from BN supporters like this M. Husairy Othman. I didn't even bother to read the rest of his writing, the mere subheading is enough to tell me that this guy has either a low intellect or he is simply a BN mule for issuing silly spin statements.

Endorsement? What endorsement is he talking about. There isn't any need for endorsement. The court was asked to interpret the Perak Constitution, in particular the article XVI (6) which clearly states in plain simple English that a sitting MB can only be removed by a vote of no-confidence. The court did just that and backed it up with a precedent case. Is that an endorsement?

If any ADUN or MP wants endorsement for his position, that can only come from the voters, NOT the royal figure nor the courts.

We can expect, in the days ahead, more of this type of stupid statements from BN-UMNO ass lickers. This is an excellent example of what BN-UMNO meant when they said they want to ramp up their engagement in the alternative media. Like I said in Zorro Unmasked's blog, the longer the time given to BN UMNO to talk, the better. More rope would be unwound for them to hang themselves.

I somehow think that UMNO will not call for a dissolution of the Assembly, particularly with the back seat driver Mahathir showing utter contempt for the will of the people by pooh- poohing the idea of fresh elections to sort out the political impasse. I would go as far as to say that he was responsible for the defections. It has his 'finger-prints' all over it. The allegation that Vincent Tan was involved in bribing Hee corroborates my hunch that Mahathir and his cronies were involved.

The Perak coup has back-fired terribly on BN. They have to resolve it amicably. The longer the limbo situation the worse for UMNO. UMNO has come to realise the Rakyat will not accept Zambry as their MB and the criminal manner in which they got members to defect. The same old Mahathir modus operandi of corrupting every institution to achieve selfish political agendas is being played out in Perak. The March 08 political tsunami showed that people are sick and tired of Mahathirism. But because UMNO is in complete disarray, Mahathir continues to have some clout but that in itself will hasten UMNO's demise. Mahathirism is passe.

The best solution for UMNO politically is to persuade the 3 defectors to resign or suddenly to allow for the resignation letters which Pakatan has to be validated. Here the status quo can be maintained but at least UMNO and BN would have stemmed the haemorrhage of support somewhat.

A dissolution would see BN decimated in Perak and lead to an implotion in BN. UMNO may never regain its confidence after this which is why I think they will opt for maintaining the earlier status quo with Nizar as MB by announcing 3 vacancies due to the 'resignation' of the 3 defectors.

UMNO has bought itself the huge problems by buying over the 3 kataks. The best way out is for UMNO to make katak porridge using the three kataks and serve the dish to the rakyat. BASICALLY, LET THE RAKYAT DECIDE!
