Najib’s Penanti strategy? PDF Print

By Shanon Shah, The Nut Graph

DATUK Seri Najib Razak's assertion that by-elections are wasteful and his insinuation that the Barisan Nasional (BN) may boycott the Penanti by-election are not new ideas.

Back in August 2008, then Kelantan Umno chief Tan Sri Annuar Musa called for the BN to boycott the Permatang Pauh by-election for similar reasons. Of course, the BN still contested and was trounced by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR)'s Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The public could be forgiven for thinking that this sort of rubbishing of by-elections is driven by the BN's fear of losing. After all, being trounced in four out of five by-elections since the March 2008 general election cannot be something the BN is happy about. Umno's political bureau was to have decided on Penanti in its 4 May meeting, but the announcement was postponed. The party and its BN partners are for now keeping mum about whether the BN is contesting.

Is there a more calculated reason why the BN is being so coy about Penanti? Could it be that Najib wants to test how strong, or weak, the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) is? Could Najib be using this as an opportunity to test how much actual support the PR, in particular PKR, could garner when the BN is not part of the equation?

Picture this: the BN does not contest in Penanti, but PKR is challenged by a PR partner, like PAS, which could have happened. Or what if the contest is between a PKR candidate and a disgruntled ex-PKR "independent"? Imagine if the independent put up a credible fight and even won back his or her deposit. Najib could then say, "See? PKR isn't as popular with the rakyat as it claims to be." Already, PKR's recent vicious infighting has been aired for all to see.

Fariz PKR Youth deputy chief Fariz Musa does not discount this possibility in the BN's strategy.

"Everything, from the corruption allegations to the subsequent exoneration of (former Penanti assemblyperson Mohammad) Fairus (Khairuddin) by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), was a BN ploy," Fariz tells The Nut Graph.

This is more or less what I was saying last week, even if the infighting has been resolved thare are other ways BN can benefit from Independents, thats why I thing the whole thing was engineered by Mathias Chang http://mt.m2day.org/2008/content/view/21460/84/

Last time before 2004 election when PAS, PKR thought of boycotting all the UMNO and gang accused of PR underming democratic process and did not respect the law. Now lain cerita.

BTW, in 2013 are you also going to drag out the PR speaker from the parliament? Maybe, PR should nominate someone really strong and big this time around.

The reason why Najis will decide in not contesting Penanti is simple: He fears seeing the voters, by the thousands, wearing Altantunya masks during the by-election campaign.

PKR must print at least 10,000 masks and distribute them all over Penanti and send Rosmah urinating in fear and soak her underwear.

Let's not speculate why beEND or rather najib is being so coy about Penanti; and in doing so give him that much credit. He is not smart enough to think about those strategies. But to topple legitimate government, yes one can engage his service.

The truth is , he does not want Penanti to be his burial ground. Too much to lose.

"DATUK Seri Najib Razak's assertion that by-elections are wasteful"

Isnt that the argument they used when they got rid of local government elections... and look where that got Malaysia

The cost of by-elections is one of the costs of democracy that free thinking people would willingly pay

Under UMNO a by-election means an obscene waste of money pork-barreling and vote buying

Najib is right,PKR is not very strong but it is definitely stronger and harder than UMNO/BN which is stinking ! UMNO has to understand that PRK could defeat UMNO in Penanti no matter who stands for UMNO.Not even Mamak Kutty can escape the faith of losing if he has any balls left to contest in this area.

UMNO is just like the disease H1N1,everyone will discard it so please do not come to Penanti.

Based on the above whatever Najib want to do he is free to do. One think which almost sure if UMNO/BN the corrupt and missusege of power party will be trashed if they dare to contest. Another thing to make sure is the candidate to represent PR should have integrity like YB Sivakumar of Perak whom I am very impressed "CANNOT BE BOUGHT".So just watch out for that.
