(THE STAR) - PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail is now party spokesman while Azmin Ali and Tian Chua have been redesignated.

These are among the changes made by party adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to re-emphasise the party’s cause, improve weaknesses, clean up the machinery and increase their service to the people.

Anwar said that Dr Wan Azizah would now be responsible for monitoring media coverage and providing immediate comments on issues raised.

“It is felt that her presence should be given more prominence,” he said in his blog posting yesterday.

Azmin and Chua were previously election campaign director and information chief respectively.

The decision was made during the party’s monthly leadership meeting yesterday, he said.

PKR vice-president Azmin will head a task force comprising all vice-presidents and the Youth and Wanita chiefs while Chua is strategic director.

Chua’s post has been given to lawyer and activist Latheefa Koya while another young leader, Johnson Chong, has, been appointed communications head.

Saifuddin Nasution, who was the strategic director, will take over Azmin’s position.

The task force under Azmin has been set up to strengthen the party’s leadership at the state and division levels.

Meanwhile, in a statement yesterday, PKR deputy president Dr Syed Husin said 16 members had been expelled for committing various offences during the recent by-elections in Bukit Selambau and Batang Ai.

The offences included contesting against the party’s candidate, supporting an opponents, criticising the party. Among those sacked were S. Moganakumar and A. Jayagopal who contested in Bukit Selambau.

The cleansing of the party is really necessary in order to remain relevant. I applaud PKR for doing it now but I also hope it goes deep enough. There have been too many undesirable elements from PKR that disappoint the rakyat. Sieve and filter through the applicants who wish to join the party. For what reasons are they interested in joining? Just to ride the wagon? To take advantage of what they think is the 'new gravy train' in town? Or to serve the rakyat and party because of the alignment of their beliefs.

Hmm, it all sounds fine until the last part - a member getting sacked for criticising the party? Someone better explain this nicely.

There's no other way but to do a thorough cleaning as many PKR members are also ex-UMNO members who have not fully changed from their old mindset bringing along with them UMNO's ideology.

Well It is time to review the Performance appraisal of all MP's and Adun.PKR still need to purge out the inerts and replace by the able and experienced candidate. Now is the time to regenerate the wakil rakyats to prepare for takng over Putrajaya. PKR need to do more purge out. MP's that ahve not spoken at all in the august house have to resign. Wakil Rakyat must be proactive and engage in the wellbeing of the rakyat. The rakyat are observing the performance of them. Once teh rakyat support is lost it is exremely difficult to get back.

For all of you who think that appointing Dr Wan Azizah is purely a family affair, give me a break!

She might not be a firebrand orator, but who else stood bravely in the limelight in the dark wilderness years when Datuk Seri Anwar was still in prison and, I might add, carried off the role of the sole PKR MP with style and panache?

I admire Dr Wan Azizah as a lady of style and substance (which is a lot more than can be said of many of our BN MPs) and suggesting that it's a family affair does this wonderful lady a great injustice in light of the good work she's done so far. I think she'll be a great spokesman for PKR.

Datuk Sri Dr. Wan Azizah,

We have never met, but it was a proud moment for me, when I visited Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin and to see your name displayed in the Hall of Fame in that great institution.

I am so humbled with your contributions, pouring your heart and soul to the cause of a better Malaysia. I am honoured to be your follower.

My prayers, love and admiration to the greatest woman Malaysia has seen by far!

DSAI knows what his critics do not know ; and what is good for PKR and rakyat. If his struggle is for self interest, he wouldn't have chosen to go through all the sacrifices thus far.

So, be reasonable and fair to him.
