(The Star) - Disciplinary action will be taken against state Umno members contesting as independents in the upcoming Penanti by-election.

State Umno secretary Datuk Azhar Ibrahim said this was because Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has yet to make a decision on whether to participate in the by-election.

He was speaking to reporters yesterday after the Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas opened the 12th State Assembly session.

Azhar was asked whether Umno would support independents if Barisan decided not to contest in the by-election.

In Ipoh, Gerakan deputy president Datuk Chang Ko Youn said having a by-election for the Penanti seat was just an excuse for Pakatan Rakyat to cover up their internal problems.

He said since last year’s general election, DAP, PAS and PKR had been engaged in infighting which led to the fall of Perak’s Pakatan government.

Meanwhile, the Kedah Gerakan Youth has proposed amendments to current election laws.

State Youth chief Tan Keng Liang said in a statement that he hoped the proposals would be considered as the events occurring in the country were signs that the laws needed to be reviewed.

Among others, it suggested that the Election Commission amend the Election Act for a monetary penalty of RM50,000 for state assemblymen and RM100,000 for MPs who resigned except in cases of death, illness or other conditions causing them unfit to perform their duties.

Fairus had been under constant attack by BN over the quarry scandal. Now that Fairus had resigned as ADUN, BN again attacked his resignation as a ploy. Come on BN be consistent. Its not unususl for an elected representative to resign when his morality is questioned. It happened all over the world except BN. BN representatives clinged on to power despite being charged in court and found guilty by their own Disciplinary Committee for money politics.

For BN not to contest, UMNO/BN is trying to salvage some face for themselves, sudah jadi PONDAN kah! Better still they send TDM and let him be buried by PR.

May I ask the honourable gentlemen what he thinks of elected representatives who switch camp after being elected. Would he also suggest a monetary panelty for them too.

Would the honourable gentleman consider that in any democratic society, people are free to choose whether they are commoners or a politicians or otherwise. Would he also consider that resignation from one's position is more honourable then switching ccmps.

Tan Keng Liang is just a kid. He knows what he says. Fairus could no longer function for the constant attacks from BN, so he resigns. So what is wrong with that? What about Eli wong, the BN wanted her to resign. If she did, then BN says another political ploy to force another by-election? When she did not resign, Khir Toyol said he will definitely exploit that too. So, BN, please shut up with your childish nonsense.
