Malaysia's ruling party has retired the famous keris, a traditional Malay dagger that has previously been brandished at party events in a gesture seen as ethnically divisive.

Hishamuddin Hussein, the leader of the party's influential youth wing, shot to fame for waving the keris above his head at meetings of the United Malays National Organisation.

But the resulting outcry, and elections a year ago in which the UMNO-led coalition was deserted by ethnic Chinese and Indians, have made gestures of Malay nationalism less acceptable. Mr Hishamuddin, who is stepping down after 11 years in the role, was presented with the keris for safe-keeping.

He is now vying to become one of three party vice-presidents. "This is our culture," he said, in tears. "The keris has been handed over to me for my personal care."

Well, the keris has been retired from umno youth. He's having it sharpened for the big brother. He is not going to give it up, it reeks strongly of ketuanan melayu and it's the only tool he knows how to use for his own glory among umno morons. The only way the keris can be retired is total annihilation of umno in 2013.

It's a good beginning gesture. But if UMNO strays from the new journey, everything would be no better than before. Honestly, I'd believe UMNO has a harder task to make up for their sincerity than any of the component parties in Pakatan. It's not an impossible task if the leaders show wisdom and a geniune care for the Malaysian rakyat, not any particular race or religion. Make or break is entirely their own making. If they wish to self-destruct, they have to rein in the radicals and extremists with an iron hand. The likes of Ahmad Ismail and such 'squatter' episodes should never have occurred, permitted nor condoned in the very first place.

haiya crybaby, just because cannot brandish the keris, start bursting into tears, luckily the component party's dont follow suit, otherwise wushu swords will be brandished at MCA meeetings an kalaripayat performed at MIC meetings, the in east malaysia they will use blowpipes. What next? should DAP lauch rockets at their meetings?

OK, I think its alright to reverently kiss the keris and sheath it as opposed to brandishing it in the air menacingly. They dont get it, its not about restricting tradition, it is bad when done agaist a backdrop of delegates shouting things like "its our turn to be rich" and " hisham has unsheated the keris, so is he going to use it?"

Similarly when Najib raised the keris prior to operation lallang , contrary to popular belief he did not utter any words, but it was done against the backdrop od supporters carrying banners with words like "may 13th has begun" and " the keris will bathe in the blood of the chinese" Both Najib and hishamuddin did not reprimand ttheir overzealous and seditious supporters, so others so this as tacit approval and incitement. others are not questioning your traditions, but look at the arrogant context in which it was done.

Hisham, you are now free to take the keris and shove it up your blooming ass.

You might have won the UMNO battle,
but we Malaysians won the war!

The mother-of-all battle will be won in GE13, mark my words.

Hishamuddin, you may have kept the keris but go take a look at the video recording of your speech. Pay particular attention to the tone of your speech and your facial gestures. Rakyat has also seen and heard your speech on the TV . You think we like what we see and hear ?????????? Some call this LPPL !

And that's because, with so much dissatisfaction, dog eat dog, and distrust among each other within the party, now there's a shadow of a much larger blade looming over their heads.........

No wonder he is quickly hiding his puny blade away.

BE VERY AFRAID, UMNO!

it is nauseating to watch at every assembly, the imaginary threat to the melayus from god knows what and where and the inevitable incitement of frenzy emotions of the delegates that knows no better but instead expound their herd mentality...
if it was done tastefully as tradition dictates to defend the nation, i for one would be proud of such a noble gesture, but not a veil threat to the other communities
