After its humiliation in Kuala Terengganu, Barisan Nasional has no choice but to face the facts: the people of Malaysia are not happy with their Barisan-led government. Ever since the March general election, Barisan has been tearing itself apart in petty struggles instead of doing any serious soul-searching.

The coalition had practically every conceivable advantage in the recent by-election; that in spite of this they lost speaks to a fundamental unhappiness with our government, and nothing short of sweeping reform, whether from within or without Barisan, will change this.

Post-March 8, Barisan leaders posited all sorts of reasons for their defeat. MCA leaders blamed concern about religious freedom and ethnic relations. UMNO leaders cited Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's poor leadership. MIC leaders suddenly found the heart to say something about the problems faced by working class Indians. Gerakan and PPP politicians voiced the need for greater freedom of expression and a more open government. But instead of uniting around any sort of coherent agenda based on these problems raised by Barisan component parties, the coalition has tried to maintain business as usual, as if March 8 changed nothing.

In the meantime, every indication since March 8 has been that anti-Barisan sentiment is growing, not abating. Polls and surveys consistently show significant dissatisfaction with our leadership that cuts across race, religion, and class. In the Permatang Pauh by-election a few months after March 8, voters sent the Barisan candidate packing with a larger majority for Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim. With nearly a year since the general election, the Kuala Terengganu by-election presented the best chance for Barisan and its incoming leader Najib Tun Razak to prove themselves.

Expecting BN to change, expecting BN to fix what is wrong, expecting BN to be corrupt free or expecting anything good or sensible from the BN is just expecting the impossible.

It is more like expecting BN to be worse when and if Najib takes over.

"For the sake of our country, I hope they wake up soon." -yes, only if they, the UMNOputras[read as Barisan] continue ruling the country.
Otherwise, let's hope they don't too much damage until when the next general elections is called,
I am sure the rakyat whose calls for a more civil, just, fair and democractic soeciety have fallen on the deaf ears of the UMNOputras will be only too happy to show them the exit.

Be careful, be very careful. If Mahathirsim is awakening, then it is foreseeable that tactics to divert attention will be used. And scapegoats and sacrificial lambs will be led to the pole and be stoned at, while the real issues are conveniently swept under the carpet again.

Barisan doesnt have half a brain to rule the country. Im working and living in Singapore and their recent budget was excellent for taxpayers. Although only being a PR, we get 20% rebate of our tax paid (note that tax bracket is already low!). Also property tax has been complete done away for residential living residents (including) PRs coming to substantial savings a month. Even a PR in Singapore feel so thankful the Singapore Govt.

I look at Msia bduget and almost puked. None of the proposals seem to increase the money avaialble to spend for our citizens. Whats worse, the tax rate is lunatically high in Malaysia. No improvement to public transport, security, welfare, etc etc.

110% you will fall in the next elections as nothing has changed since March 8. I can only hope PR will get intelligent ppl to run this country.

Asking UMNO-BN to reform is just like squeezing water out of rocks. Najis and his gang, after fighting tooth and nail, to get to where they are now, won't relinguish the 'perks' for the fringe benefts staring in front of them run into hundreds of millions if not billions. They are in politics for the money not serving the people.

The time to wake up has long passed. That was last year - March 8th 2008. Today its not time to wake up. Its time to burn the forgone regime which is spinning wildly out of control and turning into an evil machination that devastates freedom. No, the time to change and wake up has long passed. Its time to give it up and burn it before it does more damage.
