The boundaries of morality are clearly different for Muslim Malaysians who have to contend not just with the Penal Code but also a wider array of syariah laws on sexual morality.

By Shanon Shah, The Nut Graph

PRESS reports that intimate photos of Elizabeth Wong have been exposed and are circulating have opened up a new can of worms.

The discussions so far on the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) politician's case have revolved around our public leaders' right to privacy. But if it was merely Wong's privacy that was at stake, why did she feel compelled to resign in tears?

Indeed, there is a dimension to the issue that is larger than the right to privacy, and that would be the dominant perceptions of sexual morality in Malaysia.

Not alone

Certainly, messages of support for Wong, who is Bukit Lanjan assemblyperson and Selangor executive councilor (exco) have been pouring in. There is no doubt that people, including Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders, feel outrage at how these private photos have been publicly distributed.

Wong is, however, not alone in her predicament.

Why just talk? If you are already thinking of it, Sir Galahad?

Perhaps we should all look towards UMNO for advice...They seem to be quite eloquent with defending the moral high ground....Let see, first on the list must by Tamby chick...He provides inspiration for younger men like the MACC chairman's son with the taglinel" The Younger the Better"...How about Jamaluddin aka. "groper" Jarjis?...A session with promises to be a "touching" experience...Who can forget our very own playboy of the year Najis Hefner...He is generally loves providing "fireworks" in the bedroom...As for Soi Lek,well, it is "plain for all to see"....the list goes on with "qualified" UMNO members who are willing to guide us their perceived" moral values"

HO HUM... more Islamic hypocrisy at work. But WTF, Malaysians of all religious persuasions are so 'holier than holy' that they could never be wrong when it comes to moral judgements

I'd go so far as to say that Religion is more " against the Law of Nature" than any sexual act... overt or covert. So long as no person is harmed by that sexual act.

Yes agreed on this one point, religion and sex, like over indulgence and failing to see from the middle. Isn't in all things good or goodness, there must also lie a distance from an opposite extremes, a lee way.

Shannon Shah,

Isn't responsible journalism all about writing the truth and nothing but the truth. Depending on your flair, you can dramatise and make your article juicy but the facts must be authentic otherwise your credibility is questionable. So it's only prudent to stop speculating about Elizabeth's offer to reign unless you've seen the real worms emerging from the can. For someone who has been a journalist for 31 years with several local and foreign credible organisations, I would expect some decent level of investigation rather than dwelling on the ambiguity of perception.

Personally I cannot see what the hooha is all about. I take it that intimate pictures refer to nude poses. The human concept of morality is truly distorted in some cultures where matters of sexuality are considered immoral except within very narrow avenues of expression. That it is universally practiced has done nothing to mitigate puerile attitude toward it.
We seem to pay less attention to truly immoral acts of preachings of hate, ostracism, and killings for the most insane reasons. Only a dishonorable individual would stoop to dishonor anyone. Desperate measures are the hallmark of the desperate.
I hope the lady in question can stand proud and tall.

tsc - How can one WANT to talk about sex and NOT talk about it? The obvious question here is whether they did it or not. It may be a private matter and not immoral for one party who is not Muslim, but for the Muslim it is another matter altogether.

Anyway, one party was weak enough to allow a potential sexual partner into her bedchambers even if he was a rascal seducer. One can be weak in terms of being offered money as bribes. One can be weak in terms of hunger for sex.

The next obvious question is how strong should our representatives be? Should we castigate them if they take money or should we castigate them if they take sex? Obviously Changkat Jering and Bkt Lanjang has a few things in common. Why scold one and champion the other?

Still want to talk about sex?

Savemalaysia, sadly, I already thought of other reasons why Ms Wong decided to resign even from the very first day she announced her resignation. I supported her to stay because as far as I am concerned this personal activity of her does not prevent her from carrying out her duty as Exco member diligently, but she threw a surprise by deciding to resign with tears the very next day. That did not make sense to me if it's simply an isolated issue with the pictures.

From that moment, I can only think of bigger things to hide. The few pictures were kind of warning shots. But this is my personal thoughts and from then on, I have been keeping quiet about her resigning even though I still make some noise against the tasteless act of distributing her pictures. Whatever it is I have said it before that I do not care if she had loads of sexual relations with both sexes as long as she has not committed any crime that disqualifies her and that she can carry out her duties well.

It's up to her to decide for now. She knows the pictures alone do not harm her reputation and there's so much support for her to stay on. It's a matter of fighting it and whatever that comes along with it. You know for sure that the ex-Selangor MB is looking for a fight and he has quietened down a lot since she declared her resignation.
