(The Sun) : About 1.35 million small and medium industries (SMIs) in the country will face an operational crisis due to dwindling revenue if the government does not raise domestic consumption in the next six month.

Many of these SMIs may even have to close shop, according to a report in China Press  today.

SMI Association of Malaysia national secretary Lee Teck Meng said there are 1.5 million companies and businesses registered under the Registrar of Companies or Companies Commission of Malaysia, and of these 90% come under the micro- and small-industry categories.

He said of the 11 million workers in Malaysia, 56% are employed in SMIs and these SMIs are facing survival test in the next six months.

"The market has sudden become very quiet after the Chinese New Year, and consumers' spending power has also dropped greatly, hitting the various industries head-on," he said.

"Although the government has not released the latest consumer indices, many industry players have revealed that sales were down after the Chinese New Year, notably for electronics and electrical appliances which have seen a 50% drop, and fashion wear, which dropped 25%. Even sales of food products have gone down by 10%.

He told the daily that the drop in consumption demand has directly impacted on the manufacturers upstream, saying 90% of some 45,000 manufacturers are in crisis mode.

He said the association has 3,000 members and 1% to 2% of them have indicated that they would switch to other businesses, a euphemism for business closures.

"Many believe it is a big shame to have to close shop, as such no members would want to tell us that they would be closing down their factories. The association has no way of getting the true picture of the crisis."

Lee said due to the lack of good financial planning, the majority of the SMIs do not have reserve fund to last them beyond six months.

Only those with a reserve fund of more than two years can weather the global economic storm, he added.

He disclosed that of the companies registered in Malaysia, 60% are micro industries which have an annual revenue of less than RM500,000, 30% are small industries with revenue of between RM500,000 and RM10 million, and the medium industries generating an annual revenue of between RM10 million and RM25 million make up another 10%.

There exist several methods that could save SMIs from the brink of collapse..First, reduction of the current fuel surchange. This factor plays an important role in cost reduction which directly or indirectly affects small businesses. Next, implementation of tax reduction on company capital assets eg, transport vehicles, laptops and PC's, small machineries. Futher tax cuts could be applied for small businesses categories with an annual turnover of RM 10 million and below....However, I doubt any of these measures will be implemented by Najib...he would rather spend money on BIG projects to fish for votes....

The virtue of asians is to save money for the rainy days. They need to preserve their savings and many hope that the interest gain will support their living expenses. This is the story of those in the private sector and the self employed. The economic theory of reducing interest to spur consumption is a western economic model where they live on borrowings and it will not necessary apply here. In time of crisis, the low interest rate will not increase consumption because the people have no job security and will hold on to the cash. At the same time, a large percentage of the people who have depended on the interest income for daily living will now have their income reduced and they will spend less as well. So the FD interest reduction is a double whammy to the contraction of consumption and the chain effect will be greater damage to the businesses as the crisis continues. So the economist in Bank Negara who are living in their ivory tower are least concern to the real danger of reducing FD interest rate. They wanted to be seen as doing something politically correct in the book, never mind what the reality is all about. When people are not sure about tomorrow, they think the people should splash their cash in the share market and gamble away whatever remaining security they have to support their daily living. For these financial people. Please wake up. Not many people have a secure job with more than RM 5k monthly pay packet and need not worry about tomorrow.

Right now many BIZ is doing Accounting Magic to separate Biznes from self implosion. So putting all Toxic debt into Failed Biznes and cleaning up own house. First revoke license, 2nd threaten to merge them with an UMNO Bank.that is why need to move money to foreign currency If the speed of events happening in Malaysia have not woken up Malaysian to take Preventative measure, then you are doomed. You know what put the nail on these SMIs? The likes of EPF, SOCSO and IRB. They are suddenly very efficient and harassing SMIs to pay and threaten court summons etc.

Lets observe and see the kind of companies that will go under and what are the reasons they give and how have the government and its authorities done to help keep these companies going.... On TV, they talk as if they are doing much, but in actual fact, not only they are doing nothing, they are pushing government authorities to collect more revenue through summons, fines and also harassment to pay up. Well, this is the so called government that is on auto-pilot and they 'listen' to the rakyat it seems.

Sinewy is right. Bank Negara has reduced the interest rate to too low a level. It does not really help business now while getting Banks to do the lending is more important to keep business afloat. Not only pensioners who depends on savings interest are feeling the pinch, the common people do too. The big drop in savings interest has a larger direct impact on the common people than news of a poor economy. Even those who could actually afford to would want to be careful on their spending with such a mindset.

Corporate tax reduction is a sure way to save the SMIs.

Another way is to defer the payment of the corporate taxes by a year. SMIs will able to pump the tax money into more meaningful fields like R & D activity, automation, quality improvement, etc.

Let's says 20% of SMIs close shop, Malaysia will be in riots and chaos in no time.
Jobless people and hungry people are angry people.

Najis still keeps telling Malaysians that Malaysia will not go into recession!
That statement is scary. It shows he is totally lost touch on our economy.

Japan GDP growth rate was -13% between Oct to December 2008.
It is obvious its GDP will be at least -20% for the month of Jan to March 2009.

What will such data tell?
Many Japanese Multi-National companies will choose to shut down their plants in Malaysia to save costs!

More Malaysians will lose their jobs, not just from SMIs.
Malaysia will be doomed!
Najis will be doomed too.

mendela, you forgot to mention that Japan's export dropped 35% in 2008.
Additionally, Japan's industrial production reported a 8.9% month-over-month drop.

You are right. EXTREMELY efficient in collecting summons. Somemore letter receive late. Yet RM10, RM20, all these things juz pile up they charge. Cost the SMI/SME time to go pay up penalty when they could be spending better time do marketing.

Market what? NO MORE MARKET ALREADY!

I know of a couple bosses, friends. They have been busy packing up. They shall be closing shop soon. Too bad for their staff. They tried to cover, but can't.Most of us have stopped employing people. Day in day out get calls of freelance, get calls of people looking for jobs. So depressing. And what is the govt doing?Yea, we're too planning to close shop soon as well. Just can't manage!

msiaman is absolutely right. The biggest enemies of not only SMIs but of any business or businessmen are the EPF, SOCSO and IRB. They want to give all these jobless law graduates from UIA and ITM work...and so take legal action against these companies on the flimsiest of reasons and include blocking off passports of businessmen if they even dispute their figures. No one is doing any business. Everyone is in court arguing and arguing....Malaysia is a gone case. It took the BN only 50 years to destroy a nation that was run by the British for almost two centuries.....
