By John Lee (The Malaysian Insider)

FEB 13 — Poor Barisan Nasional. No matter what, in the eyes of Malaysians, Barisan can do no right.

Anywhere between one and five by-elections may be coming soon, and it is a virtual certainty that Barisan will lose each of them, quite possibly by immense margins. Barisan is still busy patting itself on the back for toppling the popular Perak government; it hasn’t done anything to address the fundamental reasons why the voters consistently reject its leadership. Eventually, Barisan will have to face the public, and when it does, it will not have even the slightest fig leaf to cover its blatant failures.
Last March, was shell-shocked beyond belief when the polling results came in. Barisan leaders could not understand or comprehend the unprecedented and massive rejection they encountered at the hands of Malaysians. In the wake of March 8, Barisan conducted much “soul-searching” in an effort to figure out exactly what happened. Surely, they would come around eventually, get their act together, and try to win back the hearts of the people.

But a year later, Barisan is still as shocked and in denial as ever before. Just looking at their actions in the recent Perak crisis, it is crystal clear that they still think they are facing the same political situation as they did several years ago. Barisan leaders were clearly not expecting the massive backlash from Perakians and Malaysians; the Prime Minister-to be and other top Barisan leaders have been pulling out from various scheduled functions because of “security concerns”—the moment they show their face in public, they will be tormented like no Malaysian leader has ever been before. They have clearly misjudged public sentiment: Barisan really seems to believe that all it needs to do is to claw its power back from Pakatan Rakyat, by hook or by crook, and then all will be well again.

Barisan does not seem to grasp at all that at some point or another, it will have to face the public at the ballot box. Even if Datuk Najib Razak hides his face for the next four years, he will have to face another electoral battle eventually.  And as long as Barisan does not address any of the reasons why public sentiment is overwhelmingly behind Pakatan, the public will continue to reject Barisan’s leadership in ever larger numbers.

Barisan does not understand that the public voted for Pakatan because they actually believe in the ideals and principles Pakatan stands for. Malaysians are tired of age-old economic inequities and political injustices which Barisan persists in shoving under the carpet. Pakatan went beyond acknowledging these problems; each of its component parties unveiled substantially similar plans to address them.

Amongst all the states in the country, it is not an exaggeration to say that until last month, Perak was one of the best governed. Pakatan proved in Perak that its loose coalition is more than a marriage of convenience. In spite of having a Pas menteri besar in a substantially non-Malay populated state with numerous DAP state representatives, the Pakatan government not only proved to be administratively efficient, but keenly tackled injustices which had previously been ignored by Barisan governments. It is no accident at all that Datuk Seri Nizar Jamaluddin is now a household name throughout the country, nor that excitable bloggers are now proclaiming him to be the best menteri besar Perak has ever had.

Perakians and Malaysians at large are now angry and upset, not just because Barisan has toppled a democratically-elected government, but because Barisan has toppled a very real and effective symbol of justice and efficiency in our country. During his 11-month administration, Nizar ran a tight ship based on the principles Pakatan stands for. In Perak, Pakatan delivered on its promises.

If Barisan wants to cut its losses in the court of public opinion, it has to become more like Pakatan. The public is not supporting Pakatan just on a whim; the public is throwing its support behind Pakatan because no other party or coalition is intent on addressing the problems Pakatan raises. Barisan continues to act as if the voters owe it a favour, instead of trying to understand and address the problems voters face.

Unfortunately for Barisan, it looks as if its leaders will not be changing their tack any time soon. Judging from their handling of the Perak crisis, it is clear that Barisan still believes it can hang on to power and ride out the challenge from Pakatan. But as long as Barisan ignores the problems Pakatan tackled in Perak, and continues to tackle in four other states, it cannot hope to ever win back the support of the public. As long as Barisan persists in ignoring corruption, injustice and incompetence, it can count on the public rejecting it overwhelmingly at the polls, time and time again.

They are in for very rude shocks again in the coming by-elections in Perak and Kedah. They are not learing anything, or haven't learn enough, what is people's power. If BN loses in another 10 by-elections, they still cannot gauge the voices of the rakyat.

I don't know if I can agree that Barisan is in denial. I don't think they are that stupid. BUT Barisan do not have what it takes to change. The rot is deep and no one want to pay the price to clean it up for one reason or another.

The one in denial is really PR. If they think the widespread support they are feeling now show their strength, let me remind them of one person - Badawi in 2004. It can all change pretty quickly within 4 years if they can't keep momentum going. They ****ed up in Perak, no denying it, the voters are still symphatetic BUT they should listen to their own message if they think the voters will hold with them through thick and thin.

How can a party change when it's ideology centers around extreme malay pride "Ketuanan Melayu ", and stem a 52 year rot of corruption/ kickbacks which runs deep within it's veins? How can a party evolve when they perpetrate marginalization of the poor and minority groups? This lumbering giant is way past the expiry date and would soon succumb to it's own weight of self-preservation..

We have had enough of BNend and it's unfavourable policies. Look at our education system and the latest issue of the Teaching of Math and Science in English, until now no decision has been made. Why? The government is worried of the consequences. Then let us look at the assurance given by the Hon. Education Minister, "Our education system is sound and among the best." Then why are the children of the DPM, the Education Minister himself and many other ministers studying overseas?

Pakatan in 5 states and the wonderfully efficient running of Pakatan Perak is proof that the people are with them and then comes a clown of a DPM unethically grabbing power in Perak. My dear people, let's stick together and bring Pakatan to greater heights. We need leaders like the Hon. Nizar to lead this country to economic stabilty and racial harmony. God bless you Pakatan.

The PM to be won't want to hide his face. But he wants to hide dissidents faces and will work ISA hard for his evil self serving purpose. People of today are no longer cowed and scared of government especially corrupt government. We have Thailand as clear example of people's power. Even in Indonesia, Suharto's regime which lasted 32 years also went down the drain. No tyrant can be tolerated.

Lets put it this way, the expertise is in the PR fold. The brains have long left BN probably during TDM's time due to cronism and mismanagement of manpower. Leaders chosen were village brats with low competency level.

So, if it is not denial as per say...but rather "Bodoh Sombong".

BN will not be able to solve their problems because the leaders are the problem. Corruption, injustice and incompetence are so deeply entrenched in UMNO that removing these will mean removing most of the leaders. Losing big in the next general election and being kicked out of government is actually good for BN's soul - it needs to die before it can rise from the ashes, and start anew.

Sometimes I wonder how many of us really could visualize ourselves being put in the Pakatan members'shoe..Other than the few rotten apples, the ones who slog day in day out to struggle on with the on-going battle with the UMNO goons. Without much time for leisure, avoiding the seduction of having millions of ringgits just by crossing over to other side of the fence.. these worriors fight on, whatever manpower and expertise Pakatan has are fully uterlized. Those men behind the scene are far more honourable and admirable judging from the tremendous amoount of personal sacrifies, display of dedication, compassion, love for their fellow rakyat, in order to craft a smooth path for all people of Malaysia to walk on....Please, learn to appreciate their labour rendered, learn to see their aspiration and fighting spirits through their eyes, and learn not to hurl unkind, hurtful words against these fighters who has chosen their destiny to be in the battle field, fighting for justice, humanity and peace for their fellow human beings..

The least we could show our appreciation is be nice and kind to those who help us !!Is it too much to ask???

My bet is that in the coming by(buy) elections, BN and Mr Shit will go all out to buy and bribe for votes. Never mindlah voters, take the money and vote PR. Better still make BN lose their deposits. If you are itching to show Mr Shit and the 3 traitors your middle finger vote PR. Tell him and his stooges that you do not appreciate them screwing your back. I really hope they put an MIC man to contest for the Kedah seat, it will be a fun to see what Datuk Taada Value will say afterwards. Hmmmm " Act of God" sounds good.

'Amongst all the states in the country, it is not an exaggeration to say that until last month, Perak was one of the best governed.'

It boggles the mind on how the decision was made to appoint the new CM via unethical kataks hopping over to BN and to sack a popularly rakyat voted in CM who had proven his worth during his 11 months in office. Go figure. smilies/wink.gif

What is there to change for BN, they never ever had any ideals at all,It's as simple as that when they think of making it RICH they join BN. You don't need ideals in BN BUT you need to lick the right a@#s and you will make it.For BN changing is like changing from rich to rich & powerful...meaning corrupt to even more corrupt. Some even go to the extend of killing in the name of BN(MONEY)

2 differences come to my mind about BN and Pakatan Rakyat. BN did things right; PR did the right things the right way. After 308 BN did different things; PR did things differently. The citizens are aware that PR would get flak from BN and would be sabotaged cos BN are sore losers. It endeared PR even more to the citizens.
