Umno has 20,000 branches within 191 divisions. So they need to fabricate members to allow these branches to exist. The members do not really exist. They are just names to make up the numbers so that the branches can be created and thereafter perpetuated.

NO HOLDS BARRED

Raja Petra Kamarudin

Muhyiddin: Don’t underestimate 3 million strong Umno

Umno vice-president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin reminded opposition parties, including Pas, not to belittle Umno, while admitting the party’s need to improve various areas. Muhyiddin, who is also International Trade and Industry Minister, said the rise and fall of power is part and parcel of life and had happened to all parties.

“That is his opinion. For us in Umno, the party has been long established with more than three million members and can be regarded as the biggest political organisation.”

“Every political organisation will have its seasons. Sometimes we are strong, sometimes we will face problems. Opposition leaders will not respect us. We don’t expect them to make positive comments or statements although problems also exist in PAS and Pakatan Rakyat,” he said.

Muhyiddin was commenting on Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat’s statement describing Umno as a dying tree, after attending a Chinese New Year open house organised by Umno Kalabakan.

He said Umno and Barisan Nasional’s (BN) defeat in several by-elections are not indicators that the party is weak and cannot rise again. “We admit our weaknesses, but it does not mean that we are hopeless cases. After the general election we realised this and have started to make internal changes and reforms. Don’t underestimate Umno’s strength,” he said.

He said BN and Umno hoped to send a message to the people that the party is not static and are willing to make improvements necessary with the country’s changing political landscape. Muhyiddin added that he is confident the people will accept the party’s changes and ensure victory for BN in the next general election for continuing development in the country. — Bernama, 3 February 2009

***************************************

Okay, today, let’s get away from the Perak political crisis for the meantime while we wait for the official announcement as to whether we are going to see two by-elections or we are going to see the Perak State Assembly dissolved to make way for fresh state elections. If the Elections Commission ‘rejects’ the resignation letters of the Changkat Jering and Behrang State Assemblymen, then Pakatan Rakyat would have no choice but to dissolve the Perak State Assembly and hold fresh state elections.

What I want to talk about today is the statement by the incoming Deputy Prime Minister who will serve under incoming Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak. The incoming Deputy Prime Minister meant here is Umno Vice-President cum International Trade and Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. And his statement is about the three million members that Umno has.

Actually, Umno may have three million members, as they always proudly claim, but if you were to include the members of the 13 other component members of Barisan Nasional, then it would come to 5.5 million, or so they claim.

A short digression to this subject but still related to the issue: in the two weeks that we spent in Kuala Terengganu in the run-up to the by-election last month, we noticed that almost EVERY Chinese citizen of Kuala Terengganu is an MCA life member. Yes, that’s right, almost all the Chinese in Kuala Terengganu are life members of MCA.

Going by these statistics, Barisan Nasional should have garnered at least 90% of the Kuala Terengganu Chinese votes. But they didn’t. Isn’t this telling? Boasting about how many members you have is one thing. Whether your own members will vote for you is more important. If you can’t get even your own members to vote for you then what chance do you have of getting the ‘fence-sitters’, those who are not card-carrying members of any party, to vote for you? And we are not yet even talking about winning over the votes of the opposition supporters. This would be as remote as seeing Umno abandon Ketuanan Melayu and the New Economic Policy.

Barisan Nasional is supposed to have 5.5 million members, three million in Umno alone. But in the 8 March 2008 general election, Barisan Nasional garnered only 4,082,411 or 50.6% of the popular votes. Pakatan Rakyat managed 3,796,464 or 49.4% of the votes with only one million members.

What happened? How come Barisan Nasional won only 4,082,411 votes against the backdrop of 5.5 million party members? And surely, in an election, not only your own members vote for you. Surely the ‘fence-sitters’ or non-card-carrying voters of any party also vote for you.

Let us work out the arithmetic. Barisan Nasional has 5.5 million members and Pakatan Rakyat about one million or so. That comes to 6.5 million voters who are card-carrying party members. So about 4.5 million voters are not card-carrying members of any party. This would be the ‘fence-sitters’ or uncommitted voters that both coalitions would want to win over.

In the 8 March 2008 general election, 222 Parliament seats in 12 states (including the Federal Territory which has 13 seats) and 505 state seats in 13 states were up for grabs (Sarawak did not hold state elections in the 2008 general election). There were 10,922,139 registered voters (an increase of 600,000 over the 2004 general election), which includes the 221,085 postal voters. So the ‘real’ voters came to only 10,701,054.

The total votes garnered by Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat combined were 7,878,875. This comes to a voter turnout of 70.71%, a very low turnout indeed. If we minus the 221,085 postal votes, which are ‘bonus’ votes for Barisan Nasional, the ‘genuine’ voters would come to only 7,657,790.

This means if we minus the 221,085 postal votes, Barisan Nasional actually garnered only 3,861,326 votes against Pakatan Rakyat’s 3,796,464. This comes to a majority of only 64,862 votes.

Okay, Barisan Nasional has 5.5 million members. This means they should get at least 70.71% of this (calculated on an across-the-board basis according to the voter turnout). Therefore, Barisan Nasional should have garnered 3,889,050 votes if all their members voted for them and if calculated on a 70.71% voter turnout. Then they got the 221,085 postal votes. So the total votes for Barisan Nasional should have been 4,110,135 votes.

This means three things. Firstly, about 30% of Barisan Nasional’s members did not bother to come out to vote for their own party. Or, secondly, many of their members voted for the opposition. Thirdly, if we assume that all your members voted for you and not for the other side, this means NONE of the non-card-carrying voters voted for you. ALL voted for the ‘other side’.

Whatever it may be; it is impossible for the opposition to win 100% of the uncommitted voters. Many would also vote for Barisan Nasional even if they are not members of any of the 14 component members of the coalition. This would then mean many Barisan Nasional members did not vote for their own party. Or probably these members do not exist in the first place.

Pakatan Rakyat has just one million members or so. Yet they garnered 3,796,464 votes. The bottom line is: Pakatan Rakyat got almost four times the votes compared to the members it has, while Barisan Nasional could not even get the same number of votes as it has members.

Muhyiddin Yassin’s boast about Umno having three million members, or of Barisan Nasional having 5.5 million, means nothing if you can’t translate these numbers into votes. Hell, only 70.71% came out to vote on 8 March 2008. About 30% or three million people stayed home, many of them Barisan Nasional members as well. You not only could not get your own members to come out and vote, even those that did come out to vote did not all vote for you, their own party.

Anyway, everyone knows that Umno’s and Barisan Nasional’s ‘members’ are ‘paper’ members only. They only exist on paper. In many instances they can’t even hold general meetings because they can’t get the quorum at branch level and many meetings are mere ‘paper’ meetings.

Umno has 20,000 branches within 191 divisions. So they need to fabricate members to allow these branches to exist. The members do not really exist. They are just names to make up the numbers so that the branches can be created and thereafter perpetuated. Many branches are mere signboards to give an impression that they exist. There is really no branch activity as such.

Either way it is a farce. If the members do exist then that is bad news because your own members did not vote for you. And if the members do not exist then you are just kidding yourself. Both do not augur well for the ‘largest Islamic party in the world’, as what Umno claims to be.

And muhyyddin also said they were ready to change and the PM is suppose to have initiated reforms. How can we beleive that? Bribery and corruption still pervade the BN from KT to Perak. One moment they are so virtuous and the next the bribes are being offered for crossovers. Nik Aziz is right. We should put some poison on the tree to help it on its way.

Do you really think he will become the DPM, RPK? No way. MM will never allow Najib to choose him. Muhyiddin has been tricked by MM. The Brutus who stabbed AAB from behind will find out that there is god come this March. MM will never allow Najib to make the mistake he made with AAB. Even if he does become, remember, MM has all the chronicles of Muhyiddin. Muhyiddin will be childs play for MM and Najib. I feel sorry for this fellow to fall for MM's magic show. I do notice that he is trying very hard to impress UMNO members. I have a strange feeling that he knows what is going to happen to him come March, but is unable to do anything as MM and najib hold the purse and they are able to control UMNO members to their whims and fancy.
Ha ha ha he who laughs last laughs loudest.

As for the members issue, I agree, RPK, in fact it is worse than that. Sometimes it is only the Head of the Branch who is a party supporter. The rest are unknown, and sometimes do not know that they are a party member. Sometimes the Head of the Branch merely uses the party for his food train, his support is totally for the opposition. It is not only the politicians who play the game, the rakyaat also play the game, BN has taught.
Interesting but painful.

Dear RPK,

Firstly, whether it be Najib, Muhyidin or other BN leaders, they can never digest the statistics that you have shown, as well as the points that you are trying to drive at. It absolutely means nothing to UMNO and BN because their ego blocks them seeing reality. If you put your statistics in-terms of 'RM', 'USD' or 'GBP', then they can quickly digest it. Always show it in money value... then they will understand.

Nope. The way I figure it out is that the UMNO card carrying members came out to vote for PKR. Many of those who stayed at home were those who had no interest at all in politics.

With the problems of the BN government being highlighted with the RM50m offer, the kidnapping of PKR people, the behavior of the Police in the Kugan case, and their lame reaction, more and more sensible human beings on the BN side are getting fed up. They will simply vote to bring an end to BN. Heck, I think the human beings will bring down incorrigble UMNO first. Only the UMNO binatangs will continue with their blind loyalty. Binatangs have no sense of right and wrong.

Of course not! That's how empty he is. My interest is that you put a phone call to Perak MB Mohd Nizar and request him to dissolve the state assembly. The snap election will be about the wanton impunity of Najis Rosak and whether the nation should be turned into a Colombia or Afghanistan or Somalia where elected leaders are abducted either to ditch their parties or pay ransom. As you know, these states are banana republics and failed nations. Tell him to dissolve the state assembly.

Dear Pete,
Political parties love bragging rights as to their membership numbers, I know very well that UMNO and the rest of the BN components are just "Potemkin Villages".
Your analysis of BN having 5.5 mil members yet only obtaining only 4 mil of the popular vote is not surprising, as many branch leaders are willing to give Rm 50 to RM 150 for you to fill an application form so he/she can curry favor with top party echelons.
I personally know some people who are registered MIC members but voted for DAP.
Case in point MIC, Samy brags of having 600,000 members , yet MIC canditates collectively garnered less that 200,000 of the popular vote in GE12, this is worse than the BN average.
PPP only managed 16,800 of the popular vote, Teresa Kok alone can dwarf PPP's nationwide vote.

Just go to their branch AGM during the election of Office Bearers and you will be lucky to see more than 50 voting members in attendance, that also includes members of multiple branches, and also the entourage (read: ball carriers) from their respective Bahagian lead by their Chief UMNO Bahagian Goon.

Surely the ‘fence-sitters’ or non-card-carrying voters of any party also vote for you

THE AMENO PARTY IS FILLED WITH HANTUS, TOYOLS, ORANG MINYAK. BUT WHO CARES. THESE PHANTOM MILLIONS WILL TRANSLATE INTO REAL RM $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$MILLIONS. THAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE FOR THESE HANTUS.

Usually voters turnout is around 70%. We assume 30% stayed home or because of various reasons but I do not think so. I think up to half or 15% are reserves aka phantom. About BN’s members voted for the opposition, most people don’t even know that they are a member of a BN’s coalition party. Once there was a PPP new branch opening. A staff approach me as I was lalu about and ask for my personal details. I ask "for what"? He said "for banci"(census). I ask "banci for what"? He said "just fill it up. It’s for your own good". I said "no thanks" and walk away. Couple weeks later, a guy suddenly announce in Buletin Utama that his party have millions of members and is a large party (Ptui). There are various ways these small party can get our info and made us their party’s members.

RPK, you were wrong.

Barisan Nasional won 4,082,411 popular votes or 50.6% while Pakatan Rakyat managed 3,796,464 popular votes or 49.4% during the last general election because of two things;

1) The wind of change just started north of West Malaysia and manage to spread to central West Malaysia. It has yet to reach south of west Malaysia and East Malaysia.
2) Many fence sitters were not convince Pakatan has a chance and voted for BN.

Based on the two above, if general election were to be held now, I believe the following will happen;

1) Pakatan will win Wilayah Persekutuan, Kelantan, Kedah, Perak, Selangor and Penang with more seats and greater majority.
2) Pakatan will win over Negri Sembilan, Trengganu, Malacca, Pahang and Perlis. BN may retain Johor with less majority and less seats.
3) Pakatan will have a landside in Sabah and Sarawak.
4) Pakatan will form the Federal government and all states with exception of Johor.

I could be wrong as Johore may also fall to Pakatan as well.

In term of popular votes, BN votes will be reduce to less than 2.5 millions.

///Actually, Umno may have three million members, as they always proudly claim, but if you were to include the members of the 13 other component members of Barisan Nasional, then it would come to 5.5 million, or so they claim.///

5.5 million members out of 26 million population or 21 % of the population who are active political party members would make Malaysia the most politically active country in the world. Compare this to China where there are 20 million party members out of 1330 million population, or 1.5 %. Communist s are said to be most political active, and Malaysians are 14 times more actively involved in politics than communists.

Political parties should ideally be organizations which strive to form government to serve the interest of the nation in peace and prosperity, and to provide the environment for the citizens to works towards achieving the interest of the nation, and to seek happiness for their lives. Different political parties could choose different paths to achieve the same objectives. In developed democracies, political parties keep the citizens abreast of the policies they intend to implement when they continue in power, or if elected to power. Thus, the people would choose the government base on informed decision. The fact that not all members of UMNO voted for UMNO-led BN government indicates that the people in the country are beginning to think before they vote. That is a challenge to the gangster-like mode of operation that UMNO has been operating, especially since TDM took the throne.

The fact that UMNO was able to have 3.5 million members shows that it has a close relationship to the Malay population. Has UMNO been able to mould the mindset of the people to be self-reliance, take pride of what do for life, be responsible for themselves, and the offspring they bring to this world, and to think what they can do for Malaysia rather than what the government has to be responsible for their own individual actions, the issue of whether Malays would not be able to compete with other races would not have arisen.

Had the government informed UMNO branches that though there were provision in the constitution to provide them special privileges under Article 153, but that was to prepare them for real competition in the real world, and that they have to ensure that having gained the special assistance for themselves, they should not expect the government to continue provide similar assistance to their children, the Malays would have been ready to accept that come 1972, all Malaysians would be entitled to Article 153, or Article153 would no longer exist.

May 13 was a coup d’etat, and the person who ascended the throne needed an excuse of NEP to justify the planned violence. Again, had UMNO been sincere to see progress among Malays, to do away with crutches, as Tun Dr. Ismail said, out of pride, the same advice could have been passed on to UMNO members through its tree-like organization.

Unfortunately, NEP provided the cover for TDM to implement his legal appropriation of government funds at his whims and fancies. He was free to choose among the people who have leverage within UMNO political structure to become rich and powerful. Over time, positions in UMNO party hierarchy are seats in UMNO/government gravy trains. All hell breaks loose in fighting for UMNO positions. UMNO politicians are no longer concerned about the right policies government should follow to bring peace and prosperity to the country. So the 20,000 UMNO branches are headed by get rich quick wannables. These leaders give examples of how rewards are not commensurate with labour, and that was why work ethics are difficult to cultivate for those who are involved in politics.

Malaysians have developed the culture of living through politics rather than live on hard work and efforts. With UMNO culture replacing Malay culture, the day for Malaysian Malaysia will not materialize. Since 1998 and the fall of Suharto, Indonesia has been moving away from racial discrimination. The President of Indonesia announces that all citizens are equal and that the old wrong practices should stop. Najib would be busy showing that he is the son of his father who started racial discrimination in 1960s.

I am not the member of any political party. Why? Some reasons are that I have to yet see a party that has made its mandate given to it , in crystal clear terms of what it really stands for. I am critical and I make no apology for it. I am not one who sustains crap. I am not happy when those who are elected go on skirt chasing. At someone else's sponsorship. Sow your wild oats but why use another man's plough? Worse returning with seminal smears! Then throw a spanner in the works. This is in reference to the 2 fellas in Perak. Who is your Menteri Besar? What platform does he represent? Is it not silly to do those nocturnal acts? There is work to be done bro. What foolishness is this? Fine this is related to wild oats. Then we come to najib. Wholly disgusting. His wife's past still has the putrid stink of her past deeds. Then the Deputy Prime Minister hopefully in waiting. You did the math Pete. I am not one who is keen on numbers but I stayed with you on this one. Excellent deduction. Fits. This Muhyyidin fellow has obviously been having trouble with his math. More than that he seems to be in some slumber too. He likens to UMNO's woes as that when they can be treated with handyplast whereas the facts show that the party is in CCU. This serious face he portrays belies the fact that he is only keen to be in second command of a sinking ship. Its time he took to the lifeboat.
