(AP) Intel Corp said yesterday it is consolidating its manufacturing operations as a part of a restructuring bid that will affect thousands of jobs from the US to the Philippines.

Between 5,000 and 6,000 employees will be affected, though some may be offered posts at other facilities, the company said.

The world's largest chipmaker is closing two assembly test facilities in Penang, Malaysia and one in Cavite, Philippines and will halt production at a plant in Hillsboro, Oregon. It will also end wafer production at a facility in Santa Clara, California. All five are older factories, the company said.

Intel currently employs about 84,000 workers. The company expects to complete the job cuts by the end of the year.

Last week, Intel posted a whopping 90 per cent decline in its fourth-quarter profit, hurt by declining demand for its microprocessors — the brains of PCs — amid the economic downturn.

The results, however, matched Wall Street's expectations as the company had twice lowered its sales forecast.

Shares of the company climbed 17 cents to US$13.43 in after-hours trading, having closed the regular session up 40 cents at US$13.26. — MI

We got good fundamentals like Botak, Shakeberry, Lauderer Taib, Yakup Forex etc in high office driving away investors. Doing business in Msia is like discovering a trial of blood with no one to blame. Very smart of MM to even call for a boycott of US products when the US is one of the biggest employer & investor here. Such so call VIP's could not care whether the people suffered as they are too loaded with stolen Msian resources.

It seems once a person becomes a member of Cabinet, his / her intelligence is left behind somewhere.

Just 2 days ago, none other than Amirsham (ex Maybank) was reported to have said that Malaysia is in good shape as the retail / consumption is in good shape. Within the same breathe he then say that our export based industries are facing difficulties.

Doesn't the two statements contradict big time? As export based industries which account for a large part of the GDP are in troubled waters, factories will shutdown or enforced holidays, staff get laid off or pay reduction. Hence if that is the situation, there will be either no spending power or very careful spending.

Situation Vacant - Post of Menteri - No brain required.

Don't forget - our newly appointed Finance Minister said that our economy is decoupled from the global economic meltdown because we have strong fundamentals. Well, what can we expect when we have a moron running our economy.

To Najib, the Malaysia that he is concerned with is just the ones managed by BN. Kelantan, Penang, Perak, Kedah & Selangor may have big trouble with jobs and recession, but that is not in his radar.

This is indeed bad news for Penang and Malaysia. I know there are a lot of sub-contractors and suppliers surrounding the business operations in Penang. If Intel closes, a lot of affected companies will close down not only in Penang but also else where!

This is the beginning of Malaysia's economic meltdown and the selfish UMNO and BN Government are just looking after their own pockets and self interest at the Federal level!

Who is the politician who convincingly told the rakyat we will not be affected by recession?? And who is the politician who splashes millions and millions of taxpapers' money in KT to intimidate the voters inspite of the fact that the nation is suffering from recession???

A useless and irresponsible statesman who chooses to squander rakyat's money at his whims and fancies to pursue his selfish means. The millions used by him in KT should be used on a more constructive project such as to cushion the impact of high cost of living of the Malaysians...

Alas, this particular politician thinks that the money and wealth belong to his forefathers and him, so, why bother to worry about recession!!!

Just found out that this remark by Star is a hoax, typical of BN....

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has denied that U.S. Chipmaker Intel Corporation will close its plant here and that 2,000 workers will lose their jobs due to the closure. He clarified that the company had sought relocation of its two factories, namely PG6 and PG7, to the Kulim High-tech park, but admitted the company could be offering Voluntary Separation Schemes (VSS) to its employees.
However, the state government has yet to receive any official letter on the relocation from Intel, he told a press conference here, Thursday

Doctor M has got his wish granted, boycott American goods and Malaysian workers have lost their lively hood. Doctor M must be delighted to know that more American semiconductor companies in Malaysia are heading in the same direction. Well done doc and please thank Allah for answering your prayers. Tonight you can sleep in peace after your hearty dinner. Please spare a thought for those who have mouths to feed and have not much to spare. May Allah bless you doc M.
