(NST) SINGAPORE: Ministers in the recession-hit island republic will earn a salary of about US$1 million (RM3. 6 million) each this year -- even after a 20 per cent pay cut, a minister told Parliament yesterday.

Ministers could expect to take home about S$1.54 million (RM3.6 million) after the cuts, said Teo Chee Hean, minister in charge of the civil service.

Senior bureaucrats would see their annual salary shrink 12 per cent to S$351,000, he said, adding the figure could change depending on the economy.

"As the salaries are linked to economic performance, this year's salaries may be subject to further adjustment given the volatility in the economy," Teo said in response to a question.

In 2007, Singapore introduced a mechanism linking a significant proportion of senior civil servants' salaries to economic performance, which means that if the economy is doing well, pay will increase. The reverse occurs if growth stalls.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said recently the government would further reduce its economic forecast for this year because the global situation had worsened.

There was no discussion in yesterday's parliamentary session of Lee's salary, but The Straits Times reported in November that he would earn S$3.04 million after a 19 per cent cut.

In Bolehland, Ministers will take cue and order for Rakyat's salaries to be chopped.

While they roam the country in their big cars, frequent the 5 star hotels and the wives shop overseas.

The poor and the man on the street, like you and me, take the beating of the economic down turn...

Malaysia is in denial. Obviously, when all the UMNO/BN people are behaving the same. Global oil price is below $40 and Tenaga is talking about millions in profit, yet nothing is being done to ease our burden instead they are spending like this is the richest nation in the world. Brace ourselves for Najib!

This is a good example set by Singaporean.

I agreed that Ministers to be pay good so they can avoid corruption and according to their ability.

They will get fired or grill when they did something wrong.

As they are public servants who serving us, the rakyat. WE R THE BOSS as we are paying for their salaries.

Malaysia should also pay USD1 million and USD500,000 as annual salary to each minister and and deputy minister respectively! But first Malaysia have to get rid of corruption like Singapore. About 4,500 APs will fund this move.

BETTER NOT FOR OUR OWN MINISTERS. IF THEY DO TODAY, TOMORROW THEY WILL

Firstly, read the PAY CUT news thoroughly. Singapore ministers are more than well paid.
A twenty percent cut applies only to the top echelon.
Even with balance at 80% of current remuneration, the SIN ministers still receive a take home pay higher than our top ministers.
Do not ask our ministers for a pay cut.
Otherwise, there will be new ways to make good the lost income.
