Commentary by Wan Hamidi Hamid (The Malaysian Insider)

JAN 17 — It was a horrible blow for Datuk Seri Najib Razak. The prime minister-in-waiting has now lost two by-elections in less than five months.

Both the by-election results saw higher majority votes for the federal opposition.

Najib did his best for his beloved Barisan Nasional in the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election. Yet the voters in the BN stronghold decided to vote for Umno's arch enemy Pas.

He made many promises, granted many projects and offered a lot of goodies, and yet the voters rejected BN.

Is this a bad omen or merely another "minor" setback for the deputy prime minister who has a tough task ahead of him to take over from Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi this March?

Throughout the 11-day campaign period, Najib had worked diligently to ensure victory for BN candidate Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Salleh. According to journalists covering the by-election, he was one of the hardest working campaigners for the federal ruling coalition.

If it was not his fault, would BN leaders blame the voters? It may not be a smart idea to do so. After all, Terengganu voters were among those who helped BN increased its votes in the state when the political tsunami hit the country on March 8 last year.

What does the result mean for Umno and BN?

Besides the expected morose look on the faces of BN leaders tomorrow, the coalition's backbone Umno will also face yet another question on its actual strength to bring the Malays back to its fold.

This dreaded question — is Umno still relevant — will continue to haunt its leaders. Since Abdullah is set to leave the political arena, Najib has to inherit all the misgivings and wrong perception brought about by his soon-to-be predecessor.

If Umno persists in blaming others in its post-mortem of the by-election, it would simply mean it does not want to address the root cause of the problem; and would further damage the image of the party.

Worse still, Umno will continue to lose its battle against perception of elitism, ignoring the people and too concerned with its own personal interests.

Yet in a more negative way, it can also push certain party leaders — particularly those entering the race for party posts in March — to be more insular and parochial in their racial approach to win the hearts and minds of their own supporters.

This could mean a more divided Malaysia. Unless the Pakatan Rakyat is willing to step in to provide a real alternative.

Pas candidate Mohd Abdul Wahid Endut's victory was a second coming for Pakatan; the much-need shot in the arm for the loose coalition, after Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's official political comeback five months ago when he regained his Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat.

Pas's victory will also wipe away any possibility of the party trying to be friendly with Umno, despite the efforts by some of its top leaders almost a year ago. This will bring the party a new sense of confidence.

Other Pakatan partners — Parti Keadilan Rakyat and DAP — are already jumping for joy. Not only are they celebrating their partner's victory, this is also the time for them to regroup for the next general election.

While the post-mortem on both sides will reveal the actual turn of events and provide more details, it can be safely deduced that most Chinese voters opted for Pas while there was a swing among Malay voters for Pas.

It was the Malay votes that had got Umno so worried and the damage had been done in Kuala Terengganu. Just like a football game, losing on your home turf will certainly have a deep psychological impact.

Congrats to all Malaysians.

I think down in Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew knows that in the tiny city state, the wind of change in Malaysia, would also provide the much needed aspirations to many Singaporeans who are looking for chnage.

Lets see if Mrs. Rosy will keep the promises of contracts in the corruption lottery. Wonder what will happen to the Oil royalties promised....

The Terengganu Sate BN Govt is doomed to be spat at by the Fat Lady - maybe that will trigger a wholesale defection. After all she has promised not to set foot in KT if BN lost ....
Maybe Mrs Rosy becoming the PM isn't too bad an idea after all - it'll be the final nail in Umno's coffin, rammed in by the fat lady herself!!

Shame on you Barisan Nasional. I doubt you lost by 2,600 votes.

Go back to the Menteri Besar's office. There in the huddle spaces of the Menteri Besar's office, do the proper calculation.

With all your manipulations and all your corrupt practices and all your pigs heads and all the phantom voters thrown in by your desperate and illegitimate regime, look at the real numbers, see your real loss and despair.

Secondly.

Najib must step down. Najib is not worthy to be Prime Minister. If not because of my call then by the call of Muyhiddin, Barisan Nasional and UMNO itself. Muyhiddin's argument that Permatang Pauh was lost because Badawi was a weak leader must equally apply to the failure of Najib in winning this key seat in Kuala Terengganu.

Leave Najib, nobody wants you and nobody will miss you either.

Najib is already tainted with so many scandals... using the govt's money which is our money to fish votes in KT will not work anymore. Wonder who he is blaming now... Ezam?? Khairy?? Mahathir?? Wan Ahmad farid himself?? Pak Lah?? Ahmad Said??
Pg mamak ahmad ismail?? Idris Jusoh and cronies?? Compiling these possibilities i can think of.... mmm... just only realised they are all from the same cave.

will UMNO learn? No way la. They are too arrogant and power crazy and money hungry. They do not know that more and more malaysians dislike them. they cause racial disharmony. The rob this country's wealth and enrich themselves. and try divide and rule ploy. say one thing here but do otherwise. Best is they rule like they will never loose power. wait till on day PR takes over, all the power of PM will be in one man's hand and it will come down hard on UMNO.

UMNO will not do the right thing and they are now made of men who are greedy and not so smart.

well done PR.

from the news published, it is sad to see majority of the Chinese voters voted BN rather than PAS in this by election smilies/sad.gif, i believe this could be caused by the dirty tricks used by BN to win over the Chinese votes such as using the Hudud law to scare the chinese and etc smilies/angry.gif

The Rakyat has not only rejected Barisan Najis and the Utterly Moronic Nazi Org., but also Najis Rosak who is attempting to assume the role of PM. This is a very clear message for UMNO to reject its present leadershit, and work at coming up with a brand new leadershit ! Of course this won't happen, given the death grip these old guard in UMNO has on power.

Logically, therefore, this means the end of UMNO and Barisan Najis as well as Najis Rosak by the next GE, or even before that ! Even with massive blatant bribery, nothing could stop the march of Righteousness, Justice, Equality, Fairness, Human Rights, and the re-awakened Pride of Malaysians being Malaysians !!

The trend is clear. Umno and BN can't sweep this away as an exception. There are no more excuses, no more shifting of blame to others except themselves.

Everyone outside Umno and BN can see it. Those inside believes their loss in the past two by-elections is due to other people and things other than themselves.

The silent majority in Umno and BN must speak to rouse their leaders to awake from their slumber or pseudo sleep. Unless they make drastic changes, there is no more stopping the swift tide of change in the minds of the people.

KT is proof beyond doubt that Malaysians want change! Whether the ruling Government changes or they be changed.

The people has the last say.

Ezam, the BeeAn slayer, thank you! You brought out an irrelevant issue relating DSAI with MM. It was a distressed DSAI (& family) who in his desperate attempt to evade imprisonment for the benefit of his family and supporters, appealing to MM for a truce and pleading to MM not to "aniya" him. I felt it was very touching and felt sympathetic to DSAI. People fighting and later joining hands is not uncommon in politics. Anyone, irrespective of race, cast, creed & religion would have felt deeply for DSAI pleading to MM for 'belas-kasihan'. Ezam, thx again for helping to swing votes in favour of PAS.

Najib waved his plummy moisturised hand at the defeat, `...minor setback' and on his impending promotion, he rolled his eyes and another wave and whiff of his expensive perfume `..no bearing on the march plans'. Off he's gone to make his savile row suit and handmade shoes, maybe christian louboutin, for his coronation.

All this talk about BN and UMNO 'rebranding' - the PRODUCT is still the same! Just bad governance, corruption, cronyism, arrogance, divisive politics - and they expect a different result??!!
They still put in M2T, RahimTC - crooks and they expect to regain people's trust??!! I'm so shy that our next PM is linked to a C4 murder?!
They are even more BODOH, beyond a BODOwi! It's now NAJI-s!
