THE CORRIDORS OF POWER

By Debra Chong, The Malaysian Insider

Amid a biting wind blowing in from the South China Sea and short but sharp spells of rain marking the monsoon season, a crowd gathered last night in Chinatown here, at an open air parking lot roughly half the size of a football field.

They came to follow a series of speeches organised by the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) campaigning for Abdul Wahid Endut in the current by-election here.

Young and old, Chinese and Malays, in groups and alone, they came. Some even brought their own plastic stools.

Most, however, stood between the cars and the big puddles, umbrella in hand, listening intently as one after the other, the speakers from DAP, PKR and Pas took to the stump.

1001pakatan09.jpgForemost among the speakers last night was the princess of reformasi and daughter of Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim: Nurul Izzah. She showed up in her bright blue baju kurung, standing in the back of a lorry lit by fluorescent lamp.

She lacked the oratory skills of her father. But the crowd paid attention as she spoke to them about the fight for justice.

She pointed out the unfairness of the system, recounting how on the same night Kuala Lumpur, police had arrested participants of a candlelight vigil for the Palestinian people in Gaza being battered by Israel.

She implored the people of Kuala Terengganu to make a choice for change on polling day on Jan 17.

As she spoke, the mainly Chinese crowd listened. Some nodded their heads.

After 15 minutes, Nurul Izzah left, rushing off to another ceramah elsewhere. But others stepped up to take her place.

1001pakatan01.jpgThe highlight of the night was the candidate himself. Wahid’s popularity seems to be growing, especially among the Chinese crowd.

The five-term assemblyman for Wakaf Mempelam got them laughing with his tale of how Datuk Ahmad Said used to challenge him to boxing duels outside the state legislative assembly before he became Terengganu Menteri Besar.

But his tone turned serious in the blink of an eye.

In recounting past incidents at public rallies in Batu Enam, Batu Rakit and Batu Buruk where the authorities had used tear gas and even fired live bullets to disperse the crowd, Wahid drew parallels between the local situation and the Palestine-Israel conflict in Gaza now.

“What is the difference between the people of Terengganu getting shot at and the people of Palestine getting shot by Jews?” he asked.

The crowd went silent.

Malaysia Today blogger, Raja Petra Kamarudin, attracted almost as much attention with his talk on racism in Malaysia and how he, too, is a victim, despite being a Malay.

Seputeh MP Teresa Kok almost stole the show with her speech on the politics of fear, heavily punctuated with humour that belied her grave face.

She reminded them how last year’s independent candidate for the General Election had campaigned on a bicycle and “cycled away with 600 votes”.1001pakatan11.jpg

Kok asked the crowd not to believe what the BN said.

Repeating a rumour that a minister had “advised” the civil servants that action would be taken against them if they voted PR, she pointed out that it was a trick, that every vote was secret and remained so; that the Election Commission burns the sealed ballot papers half a year after election and the MPs from both sides witness the ceremony.

She implored the voting community to give their votes to PR.

“So pitiful,” said a Malay lady selling satay nearby.

Noticing the questioning look, she explained, “It’s pitiful that they have to speak on the back of a lorry.”

Having to speak on the back of a lorry is a small matter for these heroes and heroines. They are prepared to stand on a bed of nails if necessary!

From their past records and performances, I believe most of the PR leaders are fighting for their ideal of justice and good governance and not for money to be made when they gain power later. So, vote PR / PAS !!

More pitiful than standing on the back of a lorry. There are rural folks who have to be carried on the back and walk for quiet a distance to hear our heroes giving speeches. And also they have to bring there own home boiled drinking water.
For umno/BN,they have free mineral water, food chairs, expensive and well decorated stage, sofas,hi-fi and 'ang pows'.
But all these will come to a happy ending, with the wise people of KT ,voting for PAS, in order to kick out umno.

Nurul Izzah, her sisters and mother suffered very much from the shame and stigma resulting from the false charges of sodomy slapped on Anwar by Madheadtail, Najis and AMNO. For that, KT voters, please give your votes to PR / PAS. The rest of the Malaysian will be thankful to you.

But I pity Raja Petra. He has nothing to gain personally for campaigning in KT. He can and should very well relax and spend some quality time with his wife and daughter at home before he is sent off to Sg Buloh or Kamunting on kangaroo charges. If I am a KT voter, I will surely give PR/PAS my vote.

On Jan 17, even if it rains cow dung, red ants or arrows, all the good and right-thinking KT votes must come out to cast their votes for PR / PAS. Even those who have received ang pows must also do likewise. Don't worry, the PAS moon will smile on you and nothing bad will happy on that day.

Vote for PAS!!! Vote for PAS is a vote for justice!! Get the BN out of Kuala Trengganu!! The BN has cheated the whole nation for 50 years, and it is time they have to get out.

Therefore, the battle in Kuala Trengganu is a battle for all Malaysians!!!!!!!!!
Let us show solidarity and put our votes together in sending this message to Najib - we Malaysians no longer fear of ISA and arrests. This is a long battle to bring about change to Malaysia for the sake of all anak Malaysia.

There is nothing wrong speaking behind a lorry with flourescent light. It is only politician who are friendly and humble but speak the truth is indeed the acceptance. Unlike the arrogant UMNO/BN where they spend rakyats money for lavish platform and giving carrot sticks to the people. At least we feel good to listen to CAT politicians than the corrupt liars , rapist and muderers. I hope KT rakyat dont make costly mistake to vote BN in. Have a good conscience to save Malaysia from the BN politicians from HELL to administer the country

Looks like the fight is starting to build. Is a vote for PAS a vote for Hudud law and a vote for Umno a vote for ISA?The wind and rain add color to this campaign. It's going to be a hard battle.

Abdul Wahid Endut, the PAS candidate, is a humble and modest man who has quietly but effectively served the people in KT for 18 years.

Instead of stirring emotions against BN, Abdul Wahid should be telling the voters about his own vast experience in KT. As the State Assemblyman for Wakaf Mempelam (within the parliamentary constituency of Kuala Terengganu), he understands their problems and challenges. Abdul Wahid should say that he is ready to speak out in Parliament for all who live in KT, whether Malay or Chinese or Indian.

PR speakers from DAP and PKR must explain the important part KT voters have in forming a new federal government (competent, accountable, transparent, fair and just to all citizens) to replace the corrupt and ineffective BN government.

Voting for the PAS candidate in KT will bring Malaysia one step closer to forming a PR federal government (one more member of parliament on PR side). Only when PR can form the federal government will the oil profits finally be returned in full to Terengganu. Only an honest federal government under PR can carefully manage projects to benefit many ordinary citizens (not just a few greedy BN cronies) in Terengganu.

That is why all KT voters should go out to vote Abdul Wahid Endut (the PAS candidate) to Parliament!

Yes indeed!"“So pitiful,” said a Malay lady selling satay nearby. “It’s pitiful that they have to speak on the back of a lorry.”".

This is humility at its best, and which tugs on the hearts & minds of ordinary people.

Allah/God be with you, people of PKR in KT!

Pakatan Rakyat, please leave the issue of Gaza out.

What has that got to do with KT by-election. And you are talking to a Chinese community. You should ally their fears about electing a PAS assemblyman and why BN must be rejected.

Yes I agree with aryn entirely. Both parties must not politicize on the Gaza issue. It's not honorable or ethical to capitalize on someone's suffering in order to gain political mileage. SPR should check on this. If anyone truly care for the Palestinians, than show it by by joining Mercy Malaysia or Peace Corp and fight for the Palestinians cause. Send one of your own as a volunteer. This is showing true concern and care, not elections rhetoric's which looks ugly in the face of death of hundreds of children and women of Gaza. Any decent human being, irrespective of cast, creed, religion or political affiliation should feel deeply for the suffering of another innocent human being.
