It is obvious that the BN is banking on its track record, as a government capable of bringing meaningful development and helping the people, to retain the Kuala Terengganu seat on Jan 17.

THE CORRIDORS OF POWER

ZUBAIDAH ABU BAKAR, New Straits Times

KERAJAAN Cakna Rakyat or, loosely translated, a government that cares, is shaping up to be the Barisan Nasional's main campaign theme in Kuala Terengganu.

Recognising the local focus of the by-election, BN's main strategy is to put more substance into the coalition's usual rhetoric on development. The message is that the development carried out by the BN government is people-centric.

Driving around in the parliamentary constituency, the BN's blue-hued billboards, posters and banners are hard to miss.

People-friendly slogans accompany pictures of government leaders with the rakyat. At strategic locations are hoardings showing how much the state government has spent to build and repair houses for the hardcore poor.

There is also information on the number of impoverished homes whose rusting zinc roofs had been replaced, courtesy of the state.

Another eye-catching billboard reads: Kerajaan Cakna -- Harga Minyak Dah Turun (A caring government -- fuel prices are down).

It is obvious that the BN is banking on its track record, as a government capable of bringing meaningful development and helping the people, to retain the Kuala Terengganu seat on Jan 17.

BN leaders, especially Datuk Ahmad Said, the menteri besar and Terengganu BN chief, has been saying at many public events that development projects were aimed at sharing the state's wealth with the people, eradicating poverty, providing better education and creating economic opportunities.

He wants party workers in the constituency to help him persuade the 80,299 voters that they should return the BN for continuity.

"We want them to see what the BN government has done and can do for the people and the state."

Ahmad said this when explaining the rationale behind the many projects initiated by the government, for example in education, where it is committed to making all its citizens literate in information technology.

A programme to give laptop computers to 25,000 Year Five pupils has been well received.

Similarly, the promises to replace zinc roofs of houses of poor families and grant 4ha of land to anyone wanting to grow padi have also been popular.

The opposition, however, feels this BN strategy may backfire.

"The explanation of issues in these billboards and banners reflects that poverty remains and is an election issue," said Pas Youth chief Salahuddin Ayub.

Political scientist Mohammad Agus Yusoff of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia felt the retelling of BN's good works would not be of much use.

"Politics is always about hope and the hopes that BN offer are cliches."

Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, the Pangkor assemblyman who is campaigning in Kuala Terengganu, does not agree.

He insisted that the billboards were an effective means of letting people know what the government had done for them.

"They are important tools to send messages across to the masses, especially on local issues which are the core of this campaign."

The state legislative assembly recently approved a RM1.8 billion budget for 2009, with RM230.9 million allocated for poverty eradication and RM149 million for educational programmes.

The menteri besar has given his assurance that the budget would be fully utilised despite the threat of recession, and this, according to local Umno leaders, speaks volumes for the BN's determination to meet the people's needs.

Another smokescreen by BN to deceive the people. All kinds of proclaimations before the election only to resort to the same old corrupted ways, splurging indulgence and divide-and-rule manners after winning the seat. The people have been conned so many times that they are wary of UMNO's pack of lies and empty promises. UMNO think they are the only smart people on earth and the rest are stupid and that's what makes people so sick of them, leading to massive dissatisfaction and resentment which can only culminate in a vote against them in KT.

Development does not show you care, its youry duty, stop playing the same oudated story.
UMNO cronies were given chice cuts while the rest of terengganu got crumbs.
The is still hardcore poverty in Ganu, Lim Guan Eng will wipe out hardcore poverty in less than a term, despite Penang not even getting one fifth of the amount they pay in taxes.

The new benchmark is justice, transparency and good governance, the rest will fall into place naturally. VKM

KT voters are not interested to know the development in other states. They just want to know what development projects were carried out with the RM20 Billion petroleum royalty and how much these projects cost. They also want to know why their state is like petroleum-producing Brunei and yet they are so poor.

After sucking away years of oil money from Terengganu and if not because of the Mar 8 tsunami, does anyone think some of those money could have returned to the poor students as notebooks?

PR threat was precisely the reason why the notebooks were finally to be given out.

Barisan Najis banking on its record ... they are Dead Meat ! Trengganu doesn't need another Crystal Mosque, another Moron Cup, nor need their Oil Money being stolen away as Wang Ehsan !! Going by track record would do Pakatan Rakyat an immense favour !!

Zubaidah is right, guys. The Barisan Najis is very caring ... it cares a lot for the UMNOputras & their cronies ! It cares a lot for milking the Rakyat dry to enrich themselves. It cares a lot about staying in power and continue plundering Malaysia in their Lanun ways. It cares a lot about abusing Human Rights by incarcerating peaceful protesters into Kamunting under the draconian, undemocratic, and unIslamic law called ISA.

It cares a lot for maintaining a 2 system Govt. where all the UMNOputras & cronies can do anything and not be brought to Justice, while all the non-UMNOputras are subject to police brutality, incarceration without reason, ISA, PPA etc.etc. and get beaten up by the police etc.

Barisan Najis also cares to spend enough money to buy votes as every election for them is a Buy-Election. Once in 5 years (every GE) plus during Buy-Elections, Barisan Najis cares to show the voters it cares with the utmost insincerity, and false modesty, while making empty promises with veiled threats of keris and blood.

Barisan Najis also cares very much about making the Chinese the "fall guy" when actually the reason most of the Malays are so poor because the UMNOputras & cronies are the ones who have robbed these Malays blind ! To stay in power, Barisan Najis points the finger at the Chinese and tells these poor Malays its the Chinese' fault they are poor. The Truth is more than 30% of the economy and share market are already owned by the Malays, but unfortunately they are the elite UMNOputras. So again they say its the Chinese since the Indians are obviously poorer and worse off than the poor Malays, it has to be the Chinese who is chosen to be their "shield".

No More ! The poor Malays can see very clearly all this shenanigans and injustices and the plundering of the Barisan Najis is so so clear !

Vote for Pakatan Rakyat - PAS' Wahid Endut in KT !!
Let your voice be heard and make a Positive Difference !!

While these UMNOputras in Barisan Najis are pointing their finger at the Chinese, they forget 3 of their fingers are pointing to themselves.

All Malay voters please take note of who their 3 fingers are pointed at - the UMNOputras are the ones that have robbed you blind of your Oil Money, and spent all your money on the Moron Cup, and non-beneficial projects such as the Crystal Mosque - these are the Lanun who have robbed you of not only your money, but also your Pride and Self-Respect !!

Kerajaan Cakna Rakyat? My foot! The government indeed lacks foresight. The people should know that if the government had forsight, they would have withstood the brunt of oil price for a few months the entire consumer pricing system would have been saved.

Today the petroleum price is down to USD 40 per barrel, why is our petrol price still RM1.80?

Because of the increase of petroleum price then to RM2.70, everything has gone up. Fried noodle is up 20%, most hawker food is up 15-30%. Nothing came down. The entire consumer pricing system is messed up. Every wage earner's wage (spending power) shrink 15-30% within the last 6 months. As though this is not bad enough, now the economy is being hit and employers are freezing /reducing increments if not mulling retrenchment. Is this what we call "kerajaan cakna". Think again!

Zubaidah,

You are a "classic prostitute journalist" for bn. Actually, you are worst than a pross, bcos a pross is ashamed of doing what she does, but you, twist & turn to help bn, you have no shame.
Why don't you publicly acknowledge the fact that most Trengganu folks live in hardcore poverty while your "good" bn govt plundered Trengganu's wealth for decades? So that makes you a lying shameless pross of a journalist.

Whatever the Trengganu people received recently from umno-led govt rightfully belongs to the Trengganu folks: they don't need to show gratitude for getting what is originally theirs.

The bn govt recently "got round to repairing drains and roads - why now? Why not do it regularly for the people of Trengganu.... why now when a by-election is approaching? Aren't the bn govt hypocrites, opportunists - they pretend to serve the rakyat during an election.
And then they have no shame. Aiyo. And I heard abt the 300, 500 or 1000 cash given out by umno - how can Badawi's Islam Hadhari support bribery, corruption openly? You mean to say bribery and corruption is alright, it's not a criminal offence?

Malaysians shld boycott the star; let it go bust. It will, if you people continuously boycott it for one year, and switch on online media or the Selangor state govt issues its own newspaper. Advertisers will flock there when they know everyone "rubbish" the star.
