Malaysia's visions of a more equal future PDF Print

From weary red-eyed Indian labourers on plantations to urban middle-class Malay Muslim women, a new generation of Malaysians is pushing to end a system of racial inequality. But can their different visions for the future be brought together?

BBC Special Report

Malaysia is gearing up for political shifts in 2009. Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has announced he will step down and a successor is being found from within the ruling Malay party.

It comes after protests by ethnic minority groups precipitated an electoral drama in 2008. The opposition won votes by promising racial equality.

What will the future Malaysia look like?

I've been on a journey to meet young Malaysians from across the racial spectrum: Indians and Chinese from the ethnic minorities and the majority Malay Muslims who have special rights because of their "son-of-the-soil" legal status.

The VISION will only remain as it is. There is no will at all to push for a equal standing among the populace. For the past 51 years it had been so. During times that matter, heaven and earth is promised but after that conveniently forgotten. We need a change in Govt. for such visions to materialise.

To achieve this Vision the Rakyat must be united to drive the last nail into the coffin of UMNO as it is the bastion of racial discrimination in Malaysia.

Dear BBC;
It is unfortunate how the term bumiputera came about, do research it. BTW, bumiputera does not mean 'son of the soil', it means 'prince of the earth'. Gives you an idea why the term emerged after 13 May 1969, when UMNO princelings ruled the Malaysia, courtesy of Bapa Najib and Bapa Mukhriz, the twin fathers of Ketuanan UMNO, Kehambaan Malaysia. They fooled the Malays for 40 long years between them, we should not let their sons do the same. Natang UMNO.

Albert Tan is right about the terminology and may I add that UMNO stole it from Sanskrit, which is the mother language of all languages in India.

And then they go on to discriminate the Indians, Chinese and others. Shows how UMNO can be so original and ironic eh?

The visions of a more equal future for all Malaysians saw expression in the results of the March 8th 2008 elections results.
Whether those visions will be realised or not still hangs in the balance!!

Be careful that as we oust UMNO we don't get burnt by another divider, Islam. I have never known a politician that does not use religion as the great divider. Although Islam is a good religion however the Islamic system does not produce ethical and progressive leaders. Islam tends to produce aggressive and violent leaders. Likewise, no to Buddhist, Hindu, Christian countries.

The enemy here is The Divider (The Ruler) - class, sex discrimination, racism, religious discrimination as in Malaysia (UMNO & PAS). The Divider is in ALL religion faiths, in ALL MEN.

That's why I keep stressing that the country may have sound principles based on religion, but cannot be run as a religious country. Because the men in power do not fear God, they think themselves as god. The common citizens are usually peaceful and community living but once the politicians start getting power crazy, they will use the dividing factors to win support. In the end the citizens suffer but the politicians get their ego$ inflated and windfall$$$.

For a long time, I have been feeling this pain in my chest caused by my observation of how my Malays brothers and sisters are still being fooled, mislead, misguided to eventually becoming ridiculously confused.

Imagine the children who have been told by their father that they shall enjoy special privileges in the house.

Imagine the children who have been told by their father that they will be given special treatment in school, colleges and university.

Imagine the children who have been told by their father that they shall be given financial assistance from banks, trusts and many other government institutions.

Imagine the children who have been told by their father that they shall be assured of job opportunity.

Imagine the children who have been told by their father that they will be given special access to business or lucrative contract.

Imagine the children who have been told by their father that they are the Tuans from birth.

Imagine if the father also keep warning the children of others never to question the “supremacy” of his children or worse, organize or encouraging his children to organize demonstration proclaiming their special rights, reminding and warning others about their assured special status.

Need we argue that all the above combined will be the sure formula to destroy those children?

Many of my Malay brothers and sisters were paralyzed by the faulty racial policy of UMNO, who, I have no doubt, is the most dangerous enemy of the Malays.

If you need any further prove, just watch the interview with that poor Luqman kid from UITM shamelessly proclaiming his privileges.

UMNO's NEP policy is meant for their pockets! With MT, I no longer blame the Malays as a whole but solely on UMNO, if I'm denied any treatment under the condition of ethnicity. I'll blame Mamakthir & his Cinathir(s)! smilies/angry.gif
