Heavy police presence in KT because of past election violence, says IGP PDF Print

The Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said the heavy police presence for the by-election here is necessary as Kuala Terengganu has a history of election violence.

"We don't want rioting, stopping of buses, smashing of police cars to happen here," said Musa referring to the incident that happened in the last general when busses were stopped from entering the district, as they were suspected to be ferrying phantom voters.

"When there is no police, people complain, but when we deploy, they say it's too many," said Musa after attending a briefing by Terengganu police chief Datuk Shukri Dahlan.

Today DAP Parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang questioned the move by the police to deploy a high number of personnel for the by-election, saying that it is an abuse of power.

"This is why the police arrest of five members of Parti Keadilan Rakyat youth wing, including the Terengganu Youth chief Faris Musa, is a matter of grave concern," said Lim in a statement.

"Is this already proof of police double standards in the Kuala Terengganu by-election?" he asked.

Some 3,800 police personnel are being deployed in the constituency of 80,000 voters.

"Is 3,800 too many? There are 143 polling centres, we cannot just place one or two men in each centre," said Musa.

He also gave an assurance that there will be no shortage of police personnel in other districts due to the large deployment in Kuala Terengganu.

"We have our way of planning," he said.

The police has also setup four tactical centres in every state constituency in Kuala Terengganu to coordinate its work.

The centres said Musa allow the people to have direct access to the police and police reports can be lodged at the centres.

Musa also reminded all political parties to apply for police permits 24 hours before organising any ceramah, adding that the move is to ensure order and stability during the by-election.

"Do not apply too late, as we need time to study the suitability of the ceramah venue," he said.

You see KT,even the IGP don't have faith in you all. This why they give you all alot of excuses.Today, they show the true color.By trucking in extra men in blue ,I can smell rat.If you see or hear anything suspicious, say something. They have failed in Permatang Pauh and they are determine to win by hook or by crook.

looking at past events, this is just intimidation for opposition parties. Most likely comments issued or statements to look out for after an arrest has been made by Hamid and IGP;-

"don't worry...the move is just to protect the rakyat.it is in the best interest of the rakyat".
"the arrest was made in the interest of national security"
"we are a nation of rule of law!"
"it is illegal for the participation of underaged children."

3800 policemen to help campaign for BN, give leaflets, etc....

KT voters, I envy you. For once, maybe you will be able to get a cup of free coffee from the police rather than the normal concept of buying them coffee.

The Idiotic General of Police clearly know nuts about effective deployment of staff, as noted here.

If you need to lie, do so convincingly- Klang has a population of 1.4 million and perpetually ridden with "incidents" Selangor CPO Khalid concedes that 700 cops are not enough to fight crime in Klang.

And now IGP expects us to believe that suddenly they can produce 3,800 cops to oversee 80,000 people thats more than 5 times the total number of police in Klang for a population 17 times smaller than klang.

Bullshit, I call it pure intimidation.

3800 for 143 polling centres, that's an average of 26 personnel each. It's believable, if you believe them. One would have thought they would deploy more and never state the exact true number.

I would say double that figure, at least. Only the stated 3800 deployed at the designated polling centres, while there rest at strategic locations, clearly visible in an intimidating presence.

The irony is, while you are wooing the Chinese voters with all kind of goodies and sweet promises, they are the ones who suffer the most with heavy police presence in KT. With difficulties in moving in and out of the city, KT residents would rather stay home, not going out and spend. Haiyahhhh...macam mana itu tauke mau cali makan maaaaa? Semua olang luluk lumah sajaaaa.....

Teresa Kok pun sama jujur.

"Do not apply too late, as we need time to study the suitability of the ceramah venue," he (IGP) said.

Can I suggest that the EC and PDRM Pre approved equal and fair venues for both parties and no more permit need to be request after nomination day. Campaigning on streets and house to use should be allowed and it should be done in small groups not more than 12 people and at least 1 or 3 policemen must follow this group to make sure not fights occur while moving from place to place.

IGP Musa is under tremendous pressure to ensure that the Cabinet minister, menteri-menteri, VIP, VVIP and all the penyokong2 and kelab2 BN don't get 'maki hamun' again on Nomination Day.

Election violence got nothing to do with this. Telling off a Cabinet Minister straight into his or her face is one thing a person should do in his or her life time. Twice if you enjoyed it. Happy Nomination Day!

Mungkin boleh masuk Gusiness Book of World Record.

Hope RPK and other bloggers and supporters can advise the Chinese and other non-Malay voters how to tackle the police problem and escort them to the voting booth. Rehearsing the procedure will take the fear out of them.
