(The Star) - The Internal Security Act (ISA) is a preventive law used by the Government, not to punish detainees but to reform them, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar.

“ISA detention is meant to safeguard the security of the country, not to punish anyone for any criminal offence,” he said yesterday at a forum titled “Is ISA still relevant?”, organised by non-governmental organisation Shah Alam Free Speech and the ministry.

Syed Hamid said detainees under the ISA were not marred by a criminal record that prevented them from contributing to the nation later.

“They can contest in elections, become Members of Parliament and move freely as long as they don’t threaten the safety and security of the country.”

He added that ISA detainees were granted several rights during their detention.

These included the right to habeas corpus (legal action against unlawful detention), the right to be told the reasons for their detention and the right to appeal or challenge the decision of an advisory board to detain them, as well as a review by the board every six months.

“It also gives room for reform of the detainee,” he said.

He said the Government would not be apologetic over the use of the ISA as it protected the nation from elements that jeopardised peace and stability.

Syed Hamid also said studies by the Government had shown that the majority of Malaysians were still in favour of retaining the ISA.

Former ISA detainee Lokman Noor Adam also spoke at the forum and related his experience during his detention in 1998 and 2001.

".....not to punish detainees but to reform them". This is a sick joke coming from the minister. How come the news reporter was arrested under the ISA? So he indirectly admitted to his crime of abusing his authority as home minister. Another damned liar.
"....that the majority of Malaysians were still in favour of retaining the ISA". For this he meant UMNO not malaysian! The result of a referendum would make him look like a big fool.

Syed Hamid forgot to add ISA is also used to protect. Didnt he use that as a reason for detaining the lady reporter on the racist remark made by Ahmad ISmail?

I am still praying that our beloved Sultan of Johor will take stern action in purging all those scumbags and scoundrels whose total ineptitude resulted in our loss of Pulau Batu Putih and its surrounding EEZ. The former foreign minister cannot escape from his ineptitude that resulted in the loss of Malaysian integrity and especially Johor stare integrity. These same stupid imbeciles that are ruling our country have raped, sodomised and pillaged whatsoever integrity left and these are the scoundrels to whom Hudud law and ISA should be severely applied.

'....ISA is used to punish and reform.....'

Well, since you need to be punished for stirring up shit for too many innocence, and you need reform to change over a new leaf for your arrogance, you should be bundled into Kamunting cell for a long period of time (10 years imprisonment) to sterilize the long-overdued filthy soul of yours!!!

Maybe this would enlighten the readers, so we can all have a good laugh at Syed Hamid Albar. It is an excerpt from the book "Pedra Branca - the road to the World Court":
"Malaysia had produced a Vietnamese document of 1833 reporting the account of a Vietnamese envoy describing Pedra Branca as a port covered with forest and greenery with reed huts. Some of the judges laughed quietly when the account was projected on the screen together with pictures of Pedra Branca as a barren rock."

Great post YLCC and Rozlan!!

Ylcc , its a fact we know with all the geological knowledge about continental drift that most of the continents were one mass.
And looking at the atolls in the South pacific we know how they were formed. Batu Puteh can be easily said as a rock that surfaced after many years and as just a rock .
I can understand the stupidity of our Lawyers from Patail PVT Ltd giving a relief to the Hague judges and a break .A Joke of the Century! Geologists all over the world may have placed this piece in their sites as Great geological jests by Great ALBAR! Mate Rozlan, you and i are the liars, Albar is the truthful angel!cheers bro! http://sjsandteam.wordpress.com/

Motherchell ... thanks. There is more. Remember the photo incident?

"The Malaysian co-agent Ambassador Noor Farida Ariffin sprang a surprise by showing the Court a photo of Pedra Branca, which we (Singapore) had never seen before. ..... This photo turned out to be a public relations disaster for Malaysia because it had been distorted to support Malaysia's point that Pedra Branca was near to the coast of Johor."

To cut the story short, Singapore replied with a real photo to demonstrate the distortion.
"We believed that Chao's demonstration made an impact on the judges. We noticed one judge passing a note to one of his colleagues. We also noticed that a member of the Malaysian delegation was clearly so embarrassed by the faux pas that she spontaneously covered her face with both hands."

Sorry, no more update (don't want to be slapped with infringement of copy rights)! You have to purchase the book to read the rest. what I have posted here is just for laughs

Tell your stories to the marines and quickly go to Kota Tinggi to save your constituency from being inundated by the impending floods perennially sweeping the town. Your integrity is as horrible as your atrocious track record in preventing floods in KT.

What poppycock studies and what majority is he talking about? half past six studies conducted among UMNO members? Merdeka centre pollster says that 70% of Malaysians rejected the ISA. I challenge Albar the clown to do a nation wide referendum.

The botak is telling a sick joke. He thinks the Rakyat is so stupid as to believe what he has just said about the ISA. The idiot botak still treats people like fools, he thinks he is trust worthy. This is nothing but 'bull crap'. The main objective of the ISA is to silence all UMNO political opposition.

The ISA, like the NEP is a reward system. The ISA is for "rewarding" oppositions and dissidents with jail sentences; while the NEP is for rewarding UMNO leaders with contracts.

Syed botak is the person that needs reform most. So, we should throw him into the Kamunting jail for a couple of years, wait and see how he will be reformed and what he will become of. Hopefully, by then he will say something that makes more sense instead of stupid things.
